The other day Drew gave an official answer in Reddit about the cannon firing issue:

The team was focused on bringing the best experience for Cursed Sails but they succeeded to have a fix for this issue. It's actually being tested but won't be patched in the live build for the first week of the Cursed Sails event (today's update). They are working to bring this fix as soon as they can.
