Merchant Equipment & Banana Gluttons

  • Two observations over my time playing the game but encountered more as of late.

    1. If you're sunk/scuttled with coops, crates or baskets you essentially have to cancel that merchant voyage unless you're lucky to find extra crates about. This seems like a poor design.

You should be able to request the missing crates from a merchant maybe for a small price as opposed to cancelling the voyage outright and losing the completion experience in addition to buying another voyage. I know some will say it's a pittance to buy new, but as mentioned in several other posts the merchants are the only faction who's quests you can't continue if you lose the crates. You can't lose your shovel and the skeletons will be there waiting for you on OOS voyages.

    1. Banana gluttons. I've run into this more times in recent weeks for whatever reason. I'll have a random join the crew only to sit down and eat all the bananas in stores before leaving. It's griefing at its finest. I feel the easiest fix or at least a curb to this would be to remove the ability to continuously eat bananas when your health is full. It won't eliminate the ability to grief banana stores 100% but it will at least make it more difficult.

    Thoughts?

  • @sardukar1234 I don't think it would be too much to ask for to allow players to buy some lost crates from the MA. If we were able to purchase them for 50 gold each we would still be able to turn a profit off of even the lowliest of chickens, pigs, and snakes.

I can see where this would be a pain in the rump to deal with but it's also a viable tactic to use against OTHER crews so by eliminating or in this case making it more difficult to do to your own crew you also make it more difficult to do to other crews.

  • @sardukar1234 As in have them start a merchant voyage and give me their crates? Care to elaborate? I find, especially if I'm solo, I'm not too eager to get close to any other ships as more often than not they are hostile.

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie Exactly, I'd be fine with a small price for losing company equipment haha but it would be a better alternative to cancelling in my opinion.

With regards to the bananas I feel like as a PVP tactic though it's pretty lacking and wouldn't really work too well in the heat of battle. Maybe if you caught a ship unmanned. Either way, it would be a hit to possible PVP tactics I'd be willing to take to avoid the negative impacts of griefers to my own crew.

  • @piratesmalls yeah, I have only one time gotten a crate from a "rival" crew. its easier to cancel and roll the odds on a new voyage. I usually post one, get those crates cancel and post a second one. if the needed animals are the same as what I have I leave the other with the merchant so I can still collect if needed. just like doing athenas. just collect the current runs crates before turning in your voyage and you will be one up most times with merchants and have them holding your spares that cant be lost at sea.

  • @iamwilliamb Not a bad strategy. There are also a few other means of boosting merchant equipment, but I feel there should be another option that doesn't rely on luck. By all means, keep the boosting but just let me resume my voyages haha.

  • Personally, I don't see why they need to guard the crates so carefully since we do have the ability to just find them anyways. I'd say, if you have an active MA Voyage, you can pickup the allotment of crates from any Outpost once so long as you have papers on you for free. The Voyage note itself essentially supports this idea in the text so why not. Would be a handy fallback if you sink, just head to a different Outpost you haven't been to so far for them and grab a new batch.

Of course people could try to exploit this to some degree, but it would be a pain. So it would essentially give you 6 tries at the Voyage before you would absolutely have to Cancel because you can't get anymore crates.

As for the Banana Glutton deal, that is a pretty good solution. Simply restrict eating them when you have full health. I can totally get behind that.

  • Agreed and agreed

This is INSANE. I play alone so I don't see this stuff. It's amazing what kind of people that are hiding under 💩 piles in society that you would normally never interact with. The internet givith and the internet takith awaym

Mate if your playing solo try and team up with another sloop. I did my last 9 merchant levels as a single sloop and had the best time....load up on cages, find a sloop and ask them if you can just follow them while they do their stuff, meanwhile you can get animals at the islands they are at.

This is brilliant and I bet we'll see a lot of this when Cursed Sails drops. I'm excited to team up with another solo sloop so we can do what we want but still have each other's back.

  • @theothervillain Yeah, it took me a bit to realize what was happening as at first I thought it was just other crew stocking up their personal stores. On several occasions the rest of the crew was wondering the same thing until we checked and realized someone had joined/dropped relatively quickly.

  • @sardukar1234

I like the teaming up solution for general gameplay and it would be cool to sail with a flotilla. I've had some good runs with other players this way (Megladon, Bilge Rat Thrones). I feel like we'll see more of this type of gameplay in cursed sails with the alliance system (though I'm sure that will introduce it's own set of issues). Realistically though it still doesn't address the core problem of replacing lost crates easily whether solo or crewed (without someone laying down/cancelling a voyage).

  • @piratesmalls That is infuriatingly stupid. That kind of stuff doesn't even have a comedic value. It's not even a good troll. It's just destruction for the sake of destruction.

A part of me wishes that videogames and the intetnet as a whole was really a test to see should you be able to interact with society. There would be a lot of people stuck in their room if it were.

As long as you can still do that to other crews. I used it as a strategy if planning to, or being attacked by another crew. Use up the supplies, and they will either stop attacking, or you'll have the advantage over them! It can also be a way of getting revenge on a crew after they stole your loot, or sunk you for no reason.

I do agree it is just plain dumb to join a crew and eat them all, that isn't strategic in any way.
