It's a weird one this, on the one hand I can see exactly why you couldn't have smoking in a game, on the other it does seem a bit odd that you can get away with robbery, murder and drunken shenanigans, but smoking is too far?... I personally smoke IRL, and I'd love a little emote that gave an indication of why I was AFK, what if the pipe was used as a sort of 'thinking' emote, your pirate gets it out, chews on it a bit while stroking his beard, then scratches his head with it, looks at it suspiciously, tips it upside down, peers into it looking for the remains of the last smoke, then repeats? That way no one is smoking, but everyone gets a pipe and a new emote

Me and my friends would love this in game. I have fond memories of socialising with a pipe in MMORPGs. It would look so good.

If you don’t want to promote smoking then I’d still be happy with the pipe. Even if we can’t smoke from it.

i dont like the idea of this being a "childs game". i think the more adult features would well round the pirate life

We don't need no stinking healthcare for smokers. God knows the stuff will work underwater, and might even help you breathe longer.

Since the drinking of grog is already in the game, I wouldn't have any objections to adding a pipe as a cosmetic item. My personal view on smoking and drinking is that they both belong to the softdrugs category. From that category alcohol is the most socially accepted, but in my opinion also the drug that makes some people obnoxious to others with sidesteps to aggression. To each their own, do what you want and like as long as you stay respectful to others.

In gameplay terms, one could use a pipe to reveal additional clues. Like the instruments and lanterns in the current GH voyages.

Native Americans used a pipe to formalize a friendly relation.
My pirate wants to share a peace pipe with a mermaid.
Could be useful for the upcoming Hungering Deep.

A lot of dedicated pipe smokers get to the point where just having the pipe in their mouth is enough. You don't necessarily have to light it.

What about, if you smoke the pipe right beforehand, you could throw the embers onto the enemy pirate to give them an interface screw? Secret super combo: Puke + Embers = Human Candle?

Why do you think there are no tobacco boxes? It is what pirates did most contraband.

Why does it have to be tobacco? There are plenty of other things one can smoke ;)

And laws all over the world are slowly becoming a lot more relaxed on this issue.

I do find it crazy, as others have pointed out, that robbing, in-prisioning, using guns, drinking grog, blowing up anything that moves with gunpowder and canons, stalking and all sorts of vile verbal abuse over mics is perfectly acceptable - yet a historically accurate (literally everyone smoked) immersive object - the pipe - would tip the game over the edge.

Are the more vulnerable minds that play this game going to start doing all of the above IRL? Perhaps, the tiniest minority - although that’s massively doubtful.

But, given the choice, I’d rather my kids smoked - than became murderous, thieving, alcoholic, gun wielding maniacs!

I guess the issue would be that they might become all of the above. But if that happens - a little bit of a puff isn’t going to make a difference!

I find the kids today are so well educated on the effects of smoking - they’re not that interested.

Just because smoking is in the game doesn’t mean that will be the thing, out of all the “bad” things in the game mentioned, they choose to do IRL.

The overwhelming vast majority won’t do any of it.

Although getting drunk and puking in a bucket will probably happen to most ;)

Do you not think it's the cartoon nature of the game that makes the drinking and other violence ok? It is set at ESRB T - Crude humour, use of alcohol, violence

Also - drinking is waaaay more socially accepted across the globe than smoking is (by and large), which is why smoking would push the ratings up I reckon.

From a game point of view as well the drinking aspect has at least some impact on the game, but other than a coughing fit or reducing run speed for a spell I cannot see what smoking would bring to the game.

Finally, personally as a father, I would allow my girls to partake in alcohol consumption when they reach a suitable age (See legal limit) within reason, but I would never want either of them to smoke.. Seeing it in game would only promote it surely as it would be reinforced by the enjoyment they have of playing the game?
