    @trophy-un1ocked

Your best argument is that most of the game doesn't matter. The problem I see with that argument is it tries to disregard or trivialize the points where it does matter. Which I'll point out still do matter.

On the contrary, I hardly PVP. I know there are those that exclusively hunt other players. So my argument based on my play style is: To me most of the game is PVE, in which case yes it doesn't matter. I dunno.

To elaborate on the "snap/slowness" I am talking about when playing on the xbox if I operate the wheel/sails/anchor/ladders and IF you have adjusted the stick sensitivity, your "look" speed is horribly reduced. (as if reset to default 5) On top of that, the camera will snap back to "center/default" of said operation (wheel/sails/anchor/ladders) if you remove your thumb from the stick.

Your play style is irrelevant with regards to whether or not it's fair for controller players when going up against kb/m players. That's the entire debate...

    oh, that makes no difference.

Please disable crossplay. Pc players cheat and it ruins the game. They already have a movement and control advantage, and they still cheat. NOT FUN as an Xbox player. I will return to the game once crossplay is gone. Until then, have fun being mercilessly murdered over and over by cheating pc players.

Seriously? You didn’t think pc players wouldn’t exploit and ruin your game?

    Team Xbox right here
I'm down for some platform wars on the soT.
Bring it keyboard and mouse players! Bring it

  • 2

Please give a choice to disable cross play. I pay for Xbox Live Gold, I do not want to play with players that don't pay for the subscription.

    LOL!

I can't read this whole thread, but I think I'm seeing two consistent posters that are saying along the lines that they don't feel an option to disable crossplay is necessary. There is some championing of articles 1 and 2 of the pirate code in there too.
At the end of the day it comes down to money. Real money, not the pretend stuff you're using for that shiny new hook. Crossplay is marketed by Microsoft as a selling feature. "Play with your friends!" It's already been a huge success in other games. When all of us pre-ordered we assumed similar fun. We would be able to play with our friends that didn't have XBox and/or use multiple devises ourselves. Rare has our money, we're in, and we're stuck...but we are few. The vast majority of Xbox players wait to see how a new title plays out before committing. The word is out! There are 2 major issues preventing sales on XBox. #1 is content. #2 is forced crossplay in which XBox players are punching bags. They won't get sales until BOTH are fixed. The crossplay issue would be equal to content except for one small difference. Content only affects SoT. The crossplay issue will affect all Microsoft games moving forward. That makes the state of crossplay in SoT a bigger concern than content.

The current design of crossplay is having the opposite affect as intended. It is dividing the community. You're either on team PC or team XBox. The Sea does call to us all, but destructive crossplay divides instead of uniting. The sad reality is making crossplay optional may not be enough to fix the problem.

Ahh the standard argument "it would cost too much" from the PC Elitists wanting to maintain their unfair competitive advantage. (FYI...1% is unacceptable) This argument is blatant misdirection and is almost entirely specious at that. Even if it does "cost money", who cares? This is something we want done.

But you guys gotta really be going deep into the well to claim cost as a reason not to implement it. You have no idea if it will cost a lot or next to nothing. Throwing out Application development SDLC jargon to try keep people from arguing with you is pathetic. Asking "what business school did you go to?" is equally pathetic. Trying to put someone down and marginalize their opinion, which happens to be a QUESION in the first place, is a LOSER ARGUMENT.

Saying SoT isn't using the cloud based M$ server platform is ludicrous. It has been a few months since I read the story on "Play anywhere games" but all in house developed titles are on the M$ server. Is this no longer the case? It would make ZERO sense for any in house play anywhere game to not use M$s servers. Remember, these are VIRTUAL servers. There is no added hardware cost to creating new servers.

QA and UAT testing...yes that has to be done. Yes that is man hours. But it MIGHT not be that many. If filters are already in place, it could very well be 2 hours for one person to test it. Fine spend the couple hundred dollars RARE. It would be a change many of us would welcome with open arms. Heck they'd get a bunch of people back on game pass. That would pay for the change and then some.

  • 0

Why not just give Xbox MKB support?
Make a cool SoT themed MKB and bundle it with the game. Sell at a discount for those who already own the game. Then, everyone would have the same choice of input device. Playing field is leveled without changing the game itself or the servers.

but then I can't play lying upside down on my bean bag chair! MKB is not comfortable!
For one, playing in a relaxed stance lowers concentration and makes you a worse player. An upright posture is more healthy and boosts your concentration. Secondly, the comfort argument is subjective. I find MKB more comfortable. The devices are sitting on a desk, I don't have to hold them. I can rest my arms on the desk. I can put food & drink next to me and just have to move my hand to get it. I have a lot more buttons to use.

If you want to increase your gaming ability, why not make some changes yourself?

@veisenberg I pay of for Xbox Live to play with other people on a Xbox, this creates a approximately balanced hardware playing field. PC players don't have to pay for the subscription and can have both hardware, mods, scripts etc as an advantage.

Yea because Rare allow mods & scripts in SoT...... As for xbox live you're crying to the wrong crowd. You'd probably get some sympathy over at https://forums.xbox.com/en-US/home. Then again you probably wont.

Do let us all know how you get on, won't you?

cross play is fine. i play xbox. i still kill pc.
    get good.

I want to say it sucks to be steam rolled by pc players, so honestly I want to turn off cross play very bad is how much I hate playing with pc players. This needs to be a thing because most of the player base is Xbox, and they are the ones who need the most katering to.

  • 0

@outdoorfob428 So are most Xbox players saying they never get beaten by other Xbox players, they're only destroyed by PC players? So if it's a conservative 75% Xbox players, I'd think Xbox players would be happy because they only get rolled by pc players? (Considering if that's the case % wise, we rarely encounter pc players)

I think the issue of cross play could be easily and quickly solved.

From what I can see the complaints and concerns raised over cross play are simply down to either misinformation or simply not understanding.

The majority of the concern seems to come from Xbox gamers and it's typically around the fact that PC users all allegedly cheat and that PC users have a mouse and keyboard which makes it unfair.

This can easily be solved simply by the dev team releasing a video explaining cross play and the limitations of the different platforms, or more importantly the differences between them. Advantages and disadvantages etc. I personally don't see there being any substance to the complaints but that's just my opinion.

If there truly is an advantage with a mouse over a gamepad then a sensitivity slider for the analog sticks would surely alleviate it? Unless of course there is no advantage.

Well not all pc players cheat, and I wonder how many cheaters actually want to pay 70€ for a game to cheat. Isn't it possible to play with mouse and keyboard on xbox ? Why do i remember seeing something about that being a possibility.

  • 0

I love how players seem to think every time they're beat it's because it's a PC player who's cheating, lol.

Anyway, Xbox limitations are nothing to do with Rare. If you want keyboard & mouse support for your console ask Microsoft. Crying to Rare that it's not fair isn't going to get you anything. I fully embrace cross play. It allows me to game with friends i normally wouldn't be able to game with. Every game should have cross party play.

As for the PC players are cheating rubbish, do you think Rare runs any anti cheat programs? You bet your life they do.

@tuukkatl Gameplay cannot be balanced as long as there are different forms of player UI. There is currently no way to 100% force a single UI (xbox controller) on PC. Until it can be 100% enforced, crossplay should be optional.

    alt text

As this is a hot topic in the community, we have created a mega thread focused on Microsoft's 'Play Anywhere' (Cross Play) between the two platforms (Windows 10 PC and Xbox One) in Sea of Thieves.

From our Design Deep Dive - Cross Play:

Here at Rare we’re building Sea of Thieves in complete feature parity across platforms. An interesting part of cross play is how wide it throws open the doors for different communities to engage and play together, and therefore increases the wealth of stories you’re likely to tell.

    https://youtu.be/pjd1JYFOsbU

Here's previous discussions on this topic:

As you participate in this thread -

    Keep to the Pirate Code
As a reminder, the Pirate Code is more than just guidelines (though the reference really never gets old), but the rules of the community and game that we expect all members to abide by when participating on the forums. Any member who fails to abide by the code may find themselves put in the brig, or removed from the community.

We also have Forum Rules, which we moderate to.

I think you did as well as you could on input parity. This is one area I do think the developers got right. Not much else, but they did very well regarding cross platform implementation.

That said, there are going to be people who absolutely do not like the idea of cross platform play and want nothing to do with it. You are also never going to have "complete feature parity" so please stop promoting it. It makes you sound dishonest. You know this already though so I feel like this thread may be a graveyard for those concerns.

I personally have no prejudice against cross platform play, but there should be an option for your customers to opt out if they wish. Although you have gone to great lengths to mitigate PC advantages, some players will just never be satisfied with cross platform play and will leave. Instead of driving them out, they should be welcomed aboard. Several other games make cross play optional so it should be fairly simple to implement.

That said, crossplay and "play anywhere" is something Microsoft has been pushing hard. They got punched in the nose pretty hard for pushing this online only, cross platform vision when launching the XBox One and seemed to back away at the time, but I can see them winding those tendrils through and trying to make this a reality.

As you are wholly owned by Microsoft, I believe you really don't have a choice in this matter. So let's drop the pretense.

You're aggressively pushing cross platform, and that's fine. Don't pretend you're listening to concerns though, because you are not. Don't pretend you can implement "complete feature parity" because you cannot.

Your company really needs to stop being dishonest with people, stop making promises they can't keep, and start becoming more transparent.

All the criticism aside, I'd like to say again that I personally feel you did a damn good job with the cross platform implementation. Good luck moving forward.

Strangley, XBone does not natively support M&K. (Playstation does offer native support).

You can use an adapter, but the input lag is atrocious.

The thing I don't get more than anything is that one of the main reasons given by the devs as to why there are no purchasable weapon/cannon upgrades is to keep the game balanced. By forcing cross-play that completely destroys that argument. Anyone who has played both PC and console doesn't deny the advantages the KB/M give players and then when you force cross-play the argument of keeping the game balanced gets thrown out the window. The player-base of this game is more than big enough to support an option to have optional cross-play the issue is the money required to do so. But this isn't a 20$ game. This is a AAA, full price, 60$ game. So I think Xbox players deserve the option to opt out of getting tooled on by less experienced PC gamers considering the whole idea of this game was to keep everything and everyone balanced. Just my two cents.

  • 0

^^^ Or in other words, if we don't get the option to opt out of cross-play, and balance isn't the main focus anymore, at least give me the option to buy a catapult with 200,000 gold and sling gun-powder barrels at enemy ships. Is that asking for too much? :p

@trophy-un1ocked said in [Mega Thread] Play Anywhere and Cross Play - Part 3:

@mindarchitect I can agree with you there for sure, but if they were able to make the respawn loading times more finite, (akin to wow/destiny/cod) where your dead for a specific time then come back. Would there still be a need for the cross play options? Right now there seems to be too many variables when it comes to repsawning in the heat of battle.

I for sure agree that the respawn times need to be addressed and fixed for sure. But I am not a programmer and don't know how/if it would be possible.

Well, in my opinion that would fix the biggest issue I have with crossplay, but not all.
The other things I feel like we have a disadvantage at that make a difference to PvP would be that on a pc your screen is clearer even when you turn around at topspeed while on a xbox the screen becomes fuzzy and hard to make out at 80% of max sensitivity already.
And pc players seem to munch bananas a lot faster than us console players. (Probably because of the wheel we get to use when pressing LB, forcing us to use 1 of our 3 precious quickslots for bananas, which I don't like cause I have the spyglass, compass and watch on quickslot as I use those a lot...)
Another small thing that could make a difference in a fight is that pc players can click a button to choose what weapon they grab, we can't as we have to press Y for each weapon.
If you want to quickly block and you press Y to grab a weapon and you hold your pistol instead of your sword your already messed up unless you take the 1 to 2 seconds to switch to the sword by pressing Y again, while in the meanwhile you already get stunlocked by swordattacks.
Small difference but can have a major impact on a quickpaced fight.
Besides those things I don't have any issues with crossplay.
(I'm jalous as can be when it comes to hearing ingame chat while in a party though, I want that for xbox or deleted for pc players. Doesn't change to much for gameplay but it does for information, information being knowledge and knowledge being power... Give us that too! XD)

  • 2

@mindarchitect Yea those are some valid points. It sucks too because those are mostly limitations of the console (not being upgrade able) and the controller (limited number of buttons, unless your a serious gamer and invests in the pro controllers) Which i would not categorize the average xbox user to be.

I do believe they put in those things, like sword swing Cooldown on miss, slow reloads, item swap delay/animation to try and balance out the "pros" and "cons." There probably is a bit of work that needs to be done for sure.

Also, yes they should look at the chat system. It sounds like a bug with in the game if you are in an xbl party chat but unable to hear the in-game proximity chat. (I wonder if you have a chatpad if you can enable a push to talk, on the controller though.) However, it seems that there are some flaws with this design and it should be looked at. That being said, as a PC player I haven't noticed a ton of in-game chatting from other ships/players. I know for one, I don't like the idea of always being heard. And I wouldn't be surprised if more and more players head/lean towards that thought also. At first it was an advantage (Because you couldnt really tell one way or the other) but I think its just "meh" now. I guess I am just not sold on the whole proximity chat sales pitch. (Guess you could say i "opt out" of it unless i join a crew of mixed/crossplayers who are chatting)

Is there not an option through the Xbox settings to allow yourself to hear others not in your party? I always thought there was but, since my party and I are isolationists, I've never tried to do it.

  • 0

@khol-thndrwlkr I wish there was, but there isen't.
@Trophy-un1ocked They did say something about a push-to-talk option for consoles a few weeks back in the patch, but haven't seen it.
And I'm not sure how it works but recently they fixed the issue where a pc player can still be heard in ingame chat while in a party until they resetted the push-to-talk option.
Maybe being able to hear others while in a party has something to do with push-to-talk?
Doubt it though... But possible I geuss... I'm not a programmer. =þ

I apologise in advance for carrying on, but it is relevant, I assure you all.

Before I start I would like to thank you guys for the transparency you have been displaying, as well as all the hard work and diligence you're doing to make the game better via bug fixes, content updates and quality of life improvements. It's rare (pun intended) to see that in the community in this day and age, where most developers don't care about their player base's concerns or feedback once they get our money. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful game created to date. It's so much fun to play, and once you add a bunch of content to insure it's longevity (it will need a lot to not become super monotonous and boring once the grind is over), I truly think it will be one of best games of this generation and will be able to stand up next to the GTAs, Borderlands, and CoDs when it comes to replay value. Every session you're in give us a unique experience, even now when all we have is skull forts and PVP to tide us over. So thank you for endeavoring to make this game perfect, and especially for listening and attempting to do so in the community's image. We know how much negative you have to sift through from the trolls in the community, and I wanted to express that us real gamers appreciate it.

    THAT BEING SAID....

You absolutely need to give us an option to play in an Xbox only server. I love that the game is cross platform. I play with a bunch of PC players and would gladly play in a cross server when I am playing with them. But when we are playing I'm a group of friends all on console and go up against PC pirates, it just isn't fair. We are coming across more and more players that are obviously hacked. And they're doing it blatantly. They don't even care, some brag about it game chat. "Aim bot bro". Last week my crew was doing a skull fort and a galleon rolled in. We are very experienced at forts and very rarely get over run with this crew. As this galleon came in we hit it with about 60 cannon balls, not to mention the barrage from the fort skels, plus 4 powder barrels, all while 3 of their players were in the water swimming to our boat to try n board us. Shoulda sunk for sure. Still managed to ram us. After a 15 minute CQC where we couldn't get these guys to die, we all ended up on the ferry at the same and they finally stole our boom barrell and sunk our ship. We were thinking "wow this might be the best crew we've ever battled". So we grab some supplies quick and charge back as fast as we can to get back into the fight. We're going with the ram strategy, with a bomb jumping off the figurehead to suicide bomb their deck to kill any players, and another jumping out the Crow's nest to bomb their hull from underneath in the water. As we're approaching our fourth player is standing near the anchor to throw it once we ram, and he gets shot and killed by a cannon manned by a skeleton, and heads to the ferry. He informs us that 2 of their players are dead on the ferry (we assume from fighting the fort waves). When we get close we hear the wave cleared sound so we know there is another on the island clearing waves and we can see one on their deck bracing for impact. This crew that I play with consists of 1 PC player and 3 console. We stay in a party so we don't give away any strategy or Intel when battling PVP. PC players can still hear game chat when in a party, so my friend can hear everything they say when we're within range. Our strategy worked perfectly. Rammed their broad side full speed, suicide bomb on third deck blows some holes and kills their captain, and a frog man let's another float up to the front of their hull to finish them off. A perfect attack, they shoulda been sunk for sure. The ram plus the 2 barrels had to blow at least 6-8 hold in their hull. Plus we put some cannonball shots in for good measure. And that's when my PC buddy heard their only living players say "OH $#&@! THEY'RE GONNA SINK US. WE NEED TO TURN GOD MODE BACK ON NOW OR WE'RE @$#&ED!" (exact quote) as he's rushing back from the island to get on his ship, we assume to attempt to repair. But instead he just hops off and comes to board us via the figurehead, as we were angled sort of triangle with both of ours close enough to jump to. He ends up killing me (the only crewmate on board) then our frogman who had headed to the island in search of him after hitting the hull. And both of us had hit him at least 3 or 4 times with blunderbuss and pistol shots. Our dead crew mates respawn and he kills them instantly. We know he doesn't have any powder barrels ( we always pillage them all from the island as soon we get there, and we were there first. And I had climbed to their nest to see if they had one to finish off their ship. They didn't) so we decide to wait a minute on the ferry so we can all spawn together to finish him off. We figured their ship had to of sunk by now, he never even attempted to repair, so all we had to do was kill him and maybe the rest of their crew if they had spawned just after they sank. We spawned together 2 on the deck 2 in the bottom floor, and we get wrecked by 1 pirate on each of the floors, after we put a ridiculous amount of damage into them without them dying. And them being able to snap shot on us and hit almost every shot, regardless of how much jumping and dodging we attempted. And the best part of all, when I spawn on the deck I look where their boat was when we died, and not only were they not sunk, but all the cannonball holes that were visible on the outer hull were completely gone, like they had spawned a new ship, and 2 of their teammates were chilling on their deck, one playing music and one dancing. The other 2 finished us off.

That was the worst I have experienced so far but I'm seeing more and more. The first was when I snuck a powder barrel into the hull of a ship and shot it with a pistol. So many holes instantly. Then all of a sudden, almost immediately after, planks started repairing every whole simultaneously with nobody hammering. It looked like call of duty zombies when ur barricading a window. I made a video last week of a fat pirate that me and my buddy cornered against his sunk ship underwater, where we smahed him with our swords at least 50 times and he didn't die. He just swam away once his boat disappeared. We unloaded all of our ammo into him and ended up dying ourselves to shark bites while giving chase.

Like I said, I love that I can play cross platform with my friends that don't play Xbox. I USED to play solely on PC. Pretty much from the end of the N64 era until halfway through the 360 era. But the hackers make multiplayer unbearable. That is why I stopped playing PC. And there is almost nothing you or anybody can do to make PC gaming pure. The hackers will always be 5 steps ahead, because developers can only be reactive to problems once they surface. They will always find a way around preventative measures. And bans are ineffective because they just use more hacks to power back to their previous levels and unlocks on a different account. But people who play multiplayer on PC know and accept these risks. A lot of console players switched to consoles to avoid those players. When I switched I was gaming on a 5 thousand dollar custom computer I had built, with literally every top end component. Do you know how much better games performed and looked on that machine vs. consoles? There isn't even a measurement. Everything is better on PC. But I still switched so I could stop getting destroyed by sub par players who hack. Just look at ONE of the many hacks that are available for your game. Google a hack and open the first result. There's like 30 cheats it gives you. It's like you have a game genie. I couldn't believe the list when I read it.

One of my friends set up a new account on his PC and downloaded either this one or a similar one from IRC that has the same features to see if it was real, and it was. It showed him where a skull fort was gonna spawn before it did, gave him hit boxes, he could see almost double the distance(including rendering sails and players) and he could auto aim like he was playing GTA. How can we possibly compete with that?

Even the advantage that honest, legit PC players have in combat isn't fair to us Xboxers. It is so much easier to dodge and aim on keyboard and mouse in every game. But at least we have a fighting chance if we're a good player.

It's only right to give us the option to play without cross platform enabled. I would never ask to see it removed completely, but when we're all on console I'd like to know we're in a fair fight. We know you obviously don't condone these hacks and will do everything u can to stop and prevent them and punish the guilty, but you're fighting a rigged bout. The hackers will always win cuz they have all the advantages of a first strike in war, without morals, regulations, and guidelines to limit what they can do, unlike developers, who have to follow fcc, govt, and Xbox regulations and have to take extra time for approval for updates from these regulatory bodies.

Like I said I love the game. It's my go to game now. FOR NOW. I don't know how long I can withstand getting wrecked by inferior players who cheat or just have the PC advantage. And that is in no way a threat to stop playing. I have absolutely no plans to do so. I don't want to. I am only requesting the option to avoid them sometimes. And everyone I play with agrees. Please hear us.

Thank you again for your hard work. We love the game and can't wait for these content updates! The game is amazing. Keep up the outstanding work, and please accept my apology for the novela of a rant I just subjected you to. I pray that the rest of the development community learns from and follows your lead, because we are 100% behind you and love your way of doing things. It's what we've needed and waited for for ages.

@mindarchitect I believe the PTT patch was for PC. It was to fix the bug that would randomly turn it on when it was disabled so other pirates could hear you when in proximity, not for partied players to hear others when in proximity. (A huge advangtage PC has). Unless I'm talking talking about a different patch, but I have read every patch's notes and I don't remember one for Xbox. I would love one though!

Keep crossplay and don't add an option to disable it. If they do, I'll move over to Xbox with all my PC buds and play using the xim. Good times.

dude, to buy an xbox you need to have a Job and Money, checking your Profile give me the clue you are a spoiled kid...
come over and buy an xbox with that USB-Dongle , and get banned asap...

thanks for your nickname, so i can add you to my ignore list!
