[Mega Thread] Player Griefing - Part 3

  • 3

I dont know if its just my luck but iave had random teamates that join my game and dont wany to play they just want to mess up your voyage. Like stealing the boat and crashing or drop what tresure you do have overboard if your on a gallion you can vote to the brig but they will just sit in there and talk trash and brag how they will get paid. But if your on a sloop you are screwed if you get a player like that its happened to me so i am sure its happened to others. This game is alredy hard enough with the random pvp players we need to be able to boot toxic players that wish to troll and mess your game up

  • 4

@greaseman85 You are asking for people utilizing the core gameplay mechanics to be punished rather than the game to get completed as a PVPVE game? Why should I be punished because you cannot defend your booty? Why should you get risk free levels while I have to deal with being sunk by others for my Skull Fort loot? PVE only mode or punishing PVP will kill this game faster than lack of content. Without enjoyable interactions with other players I can go play Sid Meyer’s Pirates, or AC: Black Flag. Changing the game or the rules to suit a small subset of users is totally flawed thinking.

  • 3

@purpleurkl There would be nothing wrong with having a PVE only mode it would not take anything away from players like you. Your afraid it would take all those easy targets away from you. Well soon you won't have any because most of the people trying SOT quits after a few quests . With a PVE only mode players could learn to play the game and when ready move on to the regular servers. Right now IMO SOT is the small subset of users. I have read tons of post were people quit or will not play because of how the game is now.
I like the game and will continue to play it and you will never steel any loot from me. I was boarded when I first started, killed several times, ship sank over a empty chicken crate.
I would also like to see as many player experience the game unlike you only thinking of yourself.

  • 3

None of this describes the griefing I see. People are joining gallon crews and sinking the ship. When I play solo I have at least one ship hound me for hours. For a crate of tea... I had some guys chase me for 2 hours tonight, they must have fired 100+ cannonballs at me. All I had were animals. Because of these types of people, I basically have to quit every solo game as soon as I see a ship...

  • 3

@purpleurkl I already explained I am talking about repeat offenders, i.e. toxic players. The game isn't about spawn camping, outpost camping, or actively chasing down other players to have a ship battle or sinking an empty docked ship because you're bored, and griefing them.

Ship battles in this game are supposed to be organic, it is supposed to happen occasionally and naturally. Some people however think the purpose of this game is to hunt down other ships, like it is Call of Duty on water. This is the reason each server has a maximum of 5 ships at any time, rather than be filled with other ships. If the objective of the game was ship combat it would contain 40 ships.

  • 1

For the 2nd time since the game's release, I have yet again been griefed by my own crew, and lost hours of work. I was on the tail-end of an Order of Souls voyage when 2 members of my crew had to leave. This left me with the laziest member of our crew who was already thrown in the brig once for not helping (he apologized so we let him out). He invited 2 of his friends to join (I know this because I checked his friends list), and NONE of them contributed. I was the only 1 doing any and all of the work! When I complained about it, they threw me in the brig and sank my ship, causing me to lose all of my treasure. I reported all 3 of them to Xbox Live, but that is of little solice...

Your updates to the brig system already can't come fast enough. We need it now.

  • 2

@galactic-geek This is why reputation (experience points / progression) need to be rewarded upon act (digging up, killing captains, and capturing animals). Turn in should be gold only. Would solve everything.

This + private crews would be amazing.

  • 0

This scuttling idea would be a great idea except for the fact that's exactly what they want you to do. When you scuttle your stuff still floats to the top. Hence you are rewarding the griefers still. Maybe the info might help. I'm sorry that it's half complaint half info. Its just frustrating because as a pioneer we didn't have to deal with this. It almost ruins the game. Almost lol. A pirate still lives within the deep sea of me heart arrrrg. Lol

  • 0

What happens to your stuff if you just quit the game, does it just disappear or is it still there so someone can recover it?

  • 0

    @jwspeed
To my knowledge, as long as some of your crew remains, it's still there... And potentially even still there after the fact...

  • 0

There needs to be a way to report players in real time for outpost camping/spawn killing. Scuttling your own ship to lose them is a terrible solution.

    @peycakes
Outpost camping isnt braking any rules. Sounds boring but not wrong

  • 1

The game has an issue if your crew gets staggered on kills (spawning back in one by one) then the enemy ships can take your bananas and tank you as you come back in and since the Blunderbuss got nerfed (which was also unfun but more fun than this). I believe enemies should not be able to take your bananas. I know you can all run back from respawn at the same time, but that leads to them being able to one shot your boat and other various problems. The enemies taking your endless supply of bananas and using it against you is not fun at all. Easily the most annoying thing in game at the moment and I have been killed for two hours straight in a brig before with my raid loot not being cashed in. So... Pretty unfun basically.

  • 6

@purpleurkl private servers is what is really needed, the choice between fighting other players and playing for fun is what this game needs most

  • 1

@xbus6 not sure if this is the correct place for this comment but, while engaged in a 3 sloop battle, mine was sunk and I was able to get aboard another and kill the owners of said sloop only to have them respawn right on board the very ship I just so valiantly captured. Bottom line....the ship should then be mine to sail away with. I shouldn't have to deal with 2 dead people constantly respawning on MY new ship.

  • 0

today alone have been griefed 3 times. people join my crew and drop whatever loot I have overboard and it seems to despawn when they disconnect. lost a captains chest 3 skulls and a create. this is getting out of hand. I can kinda understand why people get locked in the brig on joining since most of the people that join me drop my treasure. I report them whenever I can but if the leave before I click the report bottom and they had some hard to remember name I cant do anything. something needs to be done about this!

  • 1

    @captinnumnums
Join a crew in the Find A Crew section of this forum. Some have over 1k members. Really mate i cant tell you how much more fun you will have. There will always be ppl doing what your trying to do and they are experienced

@captinnumnums I had it done to me a few nights ago. It's so frustrating. Probably kids messing about.

  • 0

@creepyoldpirate i see your point but when your the victim it works in your favour.

  • 1

@searphoenix6051 for sure. I don't think it will happen but I'd love an offline mode.

  • 0

@srgnt-ice i must be one of the lucky ones. I hardly ever get bothered when I'm sailing solo. Plus, only when people are heading to outposts to drop off their loot is when they are usually harassed. I agree tho it's very frustrating that all your hard work can be easily stolen.

  • 0

    @admiral-rrrsole
No. That would be silly. If anything, make it possible to bury treasure. That way you can come dig it up later. Automatically create a map in your inventory where you buried treasure, then, when/if you die, a bottle appears with a map in it.

I wish the crashing would stop. Spent two hours doing gold hoarder missions to reach my level 25...ran into a two man crew on a sploon. One guy was talking and helping me offload...his random crewmate wasn’t communicating, and started shooting me and using his sword. I luckily killed him before he got me...but when he spawned, he got lucky and killed me. His crewmate, who was helping me, tried to thwart him but the random person raised my ships anchor and crashed it into Plunder Outpost where we were. When I spawned, they weren’t onboard but I could talk to the friendly player...I repositioned my ship...and was killed by the random player again. This time upon spawning back to my ship, I noticed their ship was gone...then I got booted from the server. 2 hours of playing, I lost 1 Captains Chest, 2 Marauders chests, 3 Standard chests, 1 Villanous Skulls, and 2 Standard skulls. Those items were still in the bilge when I spawned the second time before being booted. If you guys allowed one person to throw their a****e crewmate causing problems into the brig on a sploon, this may not have happened. Then again I lost everything I worked two hours for because the game crashed. Thanks Sea of Thieves...Love this game...but that really p****d me off. What’s the point in a sploon having a brig if no one can vote the other person into it?

  • 0

@tk52780 Can you imagine how it will be abused if 1 person could vote the other person on a sloop into the brig? The griefing would be even worse. This game is heaven for griefers unfortunately.

  • 0

My biggest grief is that the simple mechanics of this game are still broken after two patches, I absolutely love seaof thieves but it gets very frustrating especially when you open the vault on the skull fort and after two hours of battling with other crews and killing the skeletons there is nothing there, it’s empty, glitched or god knows what.

This is the second skull fort that I got screwed on and it’s just disappointing, in the game where you have to put so much time and effort in defeatifng a fort in no way in hell the reward should ever be glitched

@jam-esoteric. When I'm the victim,(of which I have been many times), I should respawn on a new ship having lost what was on the one that got stolen from under me. He bested me. Your point of view sounds like the,no consequences for your actions generation we are currently raising. I or anyone else shouldn't get a second chance. I don't remember the original crew of the Whydah respawning back onboard for a second, third, forth, fifth, chance when Sam Bellamy captured it.

  • 0

whats going to be done about hackers? Players teleporting onto my ship when I am far enough distance away from other ships that not even a player in a cannon could reach me.

I would like to see some sort of report feature to deal with cheaters.

This is why there should be some sort of peace timer after a battle when a ship is sunk or one crew kills every member of the other crew. Perhaps for the next hour or even for the duration of your time logged into the game, you cannot attack each other and steal each other's loot. This would definitely end the griefing problem or the constant coming back to fight again and again and again.

Joined 3 games and got brigged on all 3
I am sick of it. It's ridiculous.
As one of the founder members since the alpha I was excited for this games success but toxic players have ruined the game
This is one more player that won't be coming back. I've complained before not long after release and nothing has improved clearly rare doesn't want to do anything about it.
Glad I got it on game pass what a waste of money and time this game was.

Honestly have no idea why people are complaining about pvp griefing. It is your own crew mates trolling that is unavoidable and a nightmare.....

Since they need to be able to do certain things, you can't exactly restrict crew mates abilities. So there needs to be a much easier in game way to report crew griefing. Specific reporting options Like :Continues to disrupt sailing, Throwing loot overboard, blowing up the boat, purposely running the boat aground etc. Then you need to actually take the time to investigate. If that means designing software to do the job, it doesn't matter. You don't need people getting false banned, simply because their crew are jerks.

@creepyoldpirate that makes a kind of sense I would like to see a gameplay mechanic for comendeering mabye if you set a bomb on an artifact that allows them to res pawn then they can’t spawn on the ship and if you plant your own artifact then you get the res pawn point idk I think rare should look in to it

Because maybe the game is described as "a shared world adventure", rather than "Call of Duty on water"?

Originally posted this idea here, but I think it's relevant to this mega topic on griefing.

A big problem with "Sea Of Thieves" is that the community in-game is generally toxic (unlike the early days in alpha), as the game is incredibly sparse of content or ways to communicate with other ships.
Personally I would like to see some sort of community faction/player groups system, accompanied with visual indicators like flags that you can put on your ship and also have a firm gameplay reason and indication towards the actions that you can take in pvp.

Like a flag that indicates that you are friendly player or a flag that indicates that your hostile. Of course there has to be some sort of way that this is not being misused.

For instance, the ship comes at you with a raised friendly flag, at the moment the ship comes in range you are able to see the flag and your ship also has a raised friendly flag.
Then you two will be unable to capture any treasure from each other and will be considered as the ship friendly will be immune from any kind of damage caused by each other. The way I think about this is like a rock paper scissors,

Friendly flag, Ship vs Friendly flag, Ship = "No PVP with each other"
Your faction flag, Ship vs Your faction flag, Ship = "No PVP with each other"

And perhaps if some of the crew's help you with your quest, they get something extra when you turn it in at outpost, without impacting your gold income. Just a teamwork bonus, like 50% of the crew that is actually doing the quest.

Of course if the ship doesn't have, a flag up or pirate flag it will potentially indicate hostility.

Friendly flag, Ship vs Hostility flag, Ship = "PVP with each other"
Your player faction flag, Ship vs Different player faction flag, Ship = "PVP with each other" unless you both have raised friendly flag

In that last example it's possible that a different player faction can be allied to you in which case = "No PVP with each other"

Similarly vice versa is also possible, you can declare war on different player faction by majority rule in your own player faction.
Majority rule a.k.a. voting either for enemy or ally is the way to go, and in line with the pirate code.

Different player factions that are allied to your player faction are limited to one extra player faction as not destroy pvp aspects with having too many allies.
A similar limitation can be placed on having wars with different player factions but with a higher number, like 3 or so as an example.

Player faction flags will be prioritized when it comes to enemy or ally over friend or hostility flags, meaning even if your ship is running with a friendly flag, but you see enemy player faction coming at you that is also running a friendly flag, you will still be able to attack each other.

I don't know if this is an idea that is interesting to some of you, but I personally would like to meet different players on the sea without shoot first mentality.

Of course this requires a flag sytems, and players being able to create customized player faction flags, that are big enough to be seen when looking for through looking glass.

I got many constructive ideas on this problem.
I will probably work this idea further out and try to represented graphically at a later date.
