@umbrae Yeah makes sense i could tell on the last beta there was something wonky with the lighting everytime i went into caves or the tavern where there was a lot of candle lit stuff or flames my fps would tank and my computer is more then capable of running this game maxed.
Graphics downgrade since 1.0.1 patch
Was just forced to update the game on PC, since, my screen will flick random color circles and will eventually freeze and I have to reset. Was playing just fine the last few days until the update and cannot go more than 30 mins without a freeze and game restart. I have changed nothing on my PC.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled and still the same problem.
I reported the problem to the support, too. Below is what I got in response:
'Ahoy there, Thank you for reporting this issue! Your report has been sent over to our Test team for further investigation. Thank you for helping to steer the course of Sea of Thieves.'
So, imho no real confirmation that there is a problem... sigh. Time will tell. Until it's fixed, I'll take a break from this game.@nyadc85 Its not a placebo effect I used to be able to use my spyglass and see my crew on my boat from the top of an island now if I look at my boat its empty... I had my friend stand on the end of the boat and I moved closer and basically he didn't pop in on my screen until I was close enough to see him without using the spyglass.... this also happens with NPC's when approaching some islands with cannons they will start shooting at you I used to be able to sniper them but now I have to get into pistol range to see them...
@Rare you guys better not have downgraded my mythical settings??! I was able to run the game fine and it looked amazing, I hope what everyone is saying about you guys making the visibility bad and the vibrancy of color turned down is not true, because of it is I will be really upset that I invested like $300+ in all the Sea of Thieves merchandise and another $500 on an Xbox One X...not to mention my computer is super good! (GPU is a GTX 1080 Founders Edition and I have a really good i7 chip for my CPU)((plus it’s all liquid cooled)) Please allow the PC users to have “Mythical” graphics actually look Mythical! Thanks Rare! Gunna play tonight just to see the difference between my Xbox and PC with newest patch!!
@pilks4k
Same here. Playing on all legendary settings and something in terms of lod and quality of lighting definitely changed.
Please patch this. What boggles my mind is how long you guys actually fought that @NyaDC85 guy on the subject.
Now going back to his post with the "pre" and "post" screenshots he so defends and says people need to post actual before and afters "like he did" otherwise its not true. His screenshots still prove nothing like he claims. He has no actual proof of the date those screenshots were taken along with a visual representation of the VERSION of the game he took screenshots off. In all honesty, to me it looks like he took those two screenshots within a 2-5 min timeframe of each other, The only difference in those shots is the shadows are SLIGHTLY in a different position because of the angle of the sun of when he took the screenshots, but again the shadows in the second pic are almost as close to the position on the first pic which suggests what I've pointed out. HE TOOK THEM THE SAME DAY IN A 5 MIN PERIOD on the SAME VERSION of the game.
Now I can ask him the same, where is his Video Proof of him taking those screenies on different days and on different Version numbers?Thing is I don't really care, I'm surprised none of you actually questioned him on that. The thing I'm more concerned about is having trolls like @NyaDC85 on these forums causing fights for no reason. People like him need to be banned especially if he's calling people out on evidence when he clearly has none of his own.
Btw, it's not placebo, When I logged in after that patch was released, I noticed a downgrade right away and even checked to see if my settings were still on mythical as well. Yes there was major downgrade and even have video evidence of the alphas/betas and the current state. I don't need to post anything because it's very clear I am not the only one noticing these issues that need to be fixed. The many people complaining about it on reddit and on here is proof and reason enough.
@NyaDC85 be gone from this thread, no one wants your silly antics here. Try to be a better troll if you're going to be wasting your time. You've been man handled and discredited. Have a good day.
@super-poopsy I’ve been noticing that lower quality graphics at a distance thing. Super blocky trees when you’re trying to scope out an upcoming island. (xbx)
Other than that today’s update seems to have reverted some of the previous graphic changes to lighting and textures. And even the color! I can now lower my color settings back to their normal settings and the game is just colorful as it was at launch.
There are SO many videos from people's 10+ hour streams playing this game as it was at launch.
I'm sure someone could grab some footage of looking through a spyglass from a certain spot. Go to that location, now, and record the findings.I'm not entirely convinced (I'm not 'un-convinced' either, lol) about some of the LOD stuff having changed, but I definitely thought something was wrong with other players not loading into view at long distance, and through the spyglass.
Attempt to disprove your own theory by digging deep into the evidence... and then, if you fail to disprove it, you prove it.
You just need to make sure the settings are all fully up and are using the same, or comparable equipment.
(I'm not defending any attacks against this thread. I'm just saying, proving this, better than anything I've seen in this thread so far, wouldn't be too hard).
Check out some CrReam streams from launch time. Hell, hop onto his twitch stream tonight and ask him to look around with the spyglass. He's been recording 10 hour streams every day since launch. If there are these drastic changes, I'd imagine he's noticed and you could definitely pull up the evidence.Anyway, absolutely just saying this to put it out there if anyone has the time and interest to provide better evidence. I'm not looking to argue whether it's necessary.
@KiNG-KiRiASU I sent a support ticket and got the same generic answer, which unfortunately doesn't confirm anything...
@Umbrae Was it the same answer for you aswell or did you get something else?
@ORANGEDRONE I had exactly the same impression about the lighting.
LOD and players/items rendering distance is unfortunately still the same as per 1.0.1 :(@tigerwalms I really don't think it's a matter of burying; since the game released, the devs have been completely silent about pretty much any topic on this forum, aside from minimal communication by some community managers. You can check their posts by clicking on the 'Rare' button under the 'Forums' section.

Keep bumping this until it's fixed.
@OrsoSilvano This is a pretty good example of one of the issues we're discussing here.
The player is really, really close to the island (which also happens to be a tiny one) and yet the game has barely started updating the assets into higher quality lods, one can clearly see the trees floating on nothing, there's no detail objects whatsoever (plants, small rocks, clutter) and i'm fairly sure that if there were players/skeletons/animals on that island, one wouldn't be able to see them from that distance yet... which is kinda ridiculous.
I've been playing this game for 1 year, i clearly remember being able to spot players/items on an island from at least double the distance shown in those pictures. Moreover, it's such a tiny island that the game would have already loaded the full quality assets by then.
@Super-Poopsy later im gonna me also clips that will show what happened to the island when its dark and how distant i can see my friend with a light to give me signals..
The game already really poor LOD (imo), now with these recent changes it's ridiculous. Islands look like complete c**p until you're right next to one and players don't render in until they're practically close enough to grab your junk and ask you to cough. I don't even have a particularly powerful graphic card (I typically play on the Rare, although I sometimes take the fps hit and play around on Mythical for a bit) and the difference is plain to see... or not see until you're next to it as the case so happens to be.
Rare, you're already taking a huge amount of heat for the tiny amount of content in the game, with this, you're just opening yourself up for even more warranted complaints. Please revert to previous settings and then work on improving what was already poor LOD to something more appropriate for 2018.
@Pilks4k One of the current 'strategies' to get rid of an enemy ship is to just swim underwater with a gunpowder barrel and let it explode on contact.
Because of the reduced rendering distance, not only you will start seeing the enemy when it's way too late, but you won't even see him carry the damn barrel, which will only start to be rendered at an even closer distance than the player itself... Simply ridiculous.
@super-poopsy yep and even in PVE its a pain I was on the end of an island trying signal my crew on the boat to where I was they could see me with the spy glass as I wasn't rendering for them like before that first patch...
@Paul-Endri I wouldn't call this a c*********k, since the purpose here is to improve the quality of the game for everybody, not just for those who noticed the issue, but thanks for your feedback nevertheless.

My family and I sailed last night to see how things were after the latest patch. We noticed right away some lighting and color had return to the water. The game seemed to play better as well. However, LOD and rendering distance issues are still the same per 1.0.1.
We are not losing hope. There is still time for things to be fixed. Just would be nice to get these issues acknowledged and know that they will be addressed soon. With lack of content and the skull fort issue not getting fixed as expected in the latest patch, these graphics issues seriously take away from the fun we try to make on our own as we wait for the game to get better.
@super-poopsy I signed up for the forums to specifically comment on this thread. The changes from final Beta (and even launch) to what we have today are insane. It's a hot topic on reddit, with general comments of distaste for the changes on all platforms. Leave your spyglass at the dock because it only makes matters worse...
Yeah areas as a whole are much much darker now then i remember. I thought i did something with my monitors settings, but that wasn't the case. I would imagine its just a quick fix until they can fix the performance issues whatever it was causing which to me like i said seemed like a mlighting issue. Why they've decreased the view distance i don't understand , maybe they made it universal across the board is the only thing i can think of.
Considering how things are going on this forum (any forum, probably), people should spam 324429 threads with the same topic if they wanna have a chance to be heard.
Quantity over quality, boys! (sigh...)
By the way, i don't know if i'm dumb or that's how things work, but i can't see how my own threads are being tagged as. Is there a way i can add tags myself? Is it an automatic process? (in that case, can someone be kind enough to tell me how this thread is being tagged?)
@mykemichail That's very true.
I like how S**M solves this issue. If a player is hiding behind an object that did not render for you because of lower graphical settings, that player will be invisible to you, until he comes out of the cover that did not render. It's a genius idea. Watch from this moment https://youtu.be/UWUOrsoZyak?t=1782
