I try not to let a Galleon get the jump on me.

Usually do that quick 'crows nest scan' of the horizon before I jump ship to explore. If I can't find what I'm looking for in 4-5mins, I head back to the ship (or a high spot on the island) and scan the horizon again.

I'm an ok player, not great at all. I did the sloop today and cleaned up. To play solo sloop, be smart. I thought I would share my tactics for those who are hesitant to play solo.

When doing a voyage, don't pull out that shovel until you check the area for ships. When your comfy, dig dig dig.

Don't get greedy, go back immediately to the outpost you came from checking all the time for a ship docked and cash in small loads.

Look for the skull in the sky. If it's lit up, most likely all Galleons are heading there, so get to your voyages, always looking for those "where did he come from" sloops.

Visit shipwrecks all the time. I found 3 chests and a skull on 1 shipwreck.

Most important point of all!!!! If you see another ship, even a sloop near where you want to go, turn away, even in the opposite direction. Go have a Corona on a small island somewhere until the boat is gone. If they see you, they will come!

Frequent quick hauls and taking your time is the key. Don't worry if you haven't put that first shovel in if your ship is empty and your about to be engaged in battle. Use that opportunity to practice your PVP skills.

My haul today was 24 chests and 2 skulls. I only had 1 sloop battle that I eventually won, but I did lose 2 chests in the exchange.

Finally, just have fun with the game. Don't get too serious. If a big Galleon comes up on you, stand in view and wave. If your sunk, remember, none of those people were hugged as a child, so you still win!

Maybe i'm full of c**p, but it worked for me. Enjoy the game folks!

I have done nothing but SOLO since the official Launch of the game. I have 89k gold, complete Admiral outfit, and rank 22, 21, 21 with the three factions. I have sunk 3 Galleons and 2 Sloops solo. MY point is, therei s more to this game then just getting into a Sloop and sailing between destinations. You have to be observant, patient (which is impossible for many gamers), tactical, and understand the mechanics of both the sloop and Galleon.

For instance, if you are being chased by a Galleon, go into the wind. It will slow you down a bit but will turn the Galleon into a snail moving through tar. Learn to do the "carribbean drift" for sharp turns using the anchor. Outmaneuvering a Galleon is easy and they are screwed if you get shots off behind them since it takes a lot to turn the galleon around.

Another tactic I like using and works really good to repel boarders is to get some merchant quests that require you to trap snakes. cancel the quests out so you can have the snake traps to yourself. Place the snakes in the trap around your loot or by the ladders. Only music mesmerizes snakes so if a boarder tries to mez a snake simply shoot the hell out of them.

But anyway, this game is FAR from being unplayable solo or duo. Not to sound harsh but you are simply not good enough yet at suriving in this game. Practics makes perfect.

My friend and I actually take on galleons because it's an interesting challenge.

But if you can't fight them, then run away. A sloop travels faster against the wind than a galleon can. It can also turn and maneuver faster as well.

Get the galleon in a headwind so they think they can catch up, then abruptly change course around an island and go against the wind. It will take the galleon a lot longer to get around that island than it'll take you and you'll outrun the galleon.

Sloops have just as many advantages as a galleon. If you can't hack it in a sloop, get yourself a bigger crew and a galleon.

Been my ship of choice for as long as the sloop existed. In a duo sloop with 2 skilled players, a fortress takes about 15 minutes to clear and I've done it solo in about 30. Voyages are much faster and easier, and combat with gallies is mostly about clever escapes or bold maneuvering(and boom barrels). There are a LOT of places only a sloop can squeeze through, and each biome now has a big rock formation that galleons can rarely navigate(at full speed). The only reason I ever sail a galleon is when friends insist, and the only activity worth doing is fortresses and PVP. If my goal is voyages, I can earn about 4 times the gold on a sloop in the same time versus a galleon. Galleon is faster in a straight line, but takes too long to maneuver and operate. If I had one complaint about sloops, I feel they should be faster than a galleon, just based on weight, displacement, and sail ratios. Since that would be very unbalanced, maybe give sloops a grapeshot cannon mounted on the front with a 45 degree front firing angle. Grapeshot could temporarily shred sails, allowing the sloop to gain in a chase. I get very frustrated when a galleon just uses its speed to disappear over the horizon when running from my sloop. With the front angle, it would only be useful when chasing, and would not allow a sloop to just outrun a galleon in a straight line when fleeing.

The reason is they see them as an easy target.

I've never encountered a friendly galleon while in a sloop. However, the only time I've been caught off guard and sunk while anchored is when I was scouring a large island for a specific kind of chicken or pig. So... I don't do merchant missions anymore while soloing a sloop. They just take too long and keep your focus away from your ship.

That being said, I've never had a galleon sink me while digging up treasure or fighting skeletons. One of the biggest keys to being solo in a sloop is stick to the western side of the map, the islands are generally smaller and offer better views of the horizon. Same goes for the outposts on that side of the map. You don't have to circle them to tell if a ship is ported.

If you are on one of the larger islands in the west try to set anchor on the side away from a nearby outpost, so the island is between you and the outpost.

Always check for ships before you start to look and/or dig. If an outpost is closer than your next stop on a voyage, always drop off your treasure. Also, if it's you're having trouble locating the treasure, stop periodically and check the horizon.
If you haven't found the treasure, and you see a ship, temporarily abandon your search. If you already dug up the treasure and you see a ship approaching and you know you can't make it out in time, stash the treasure somewhere. They're probably just there to sink you and try to take what you have if they sink an empty ship, you can catch the mermaid and return to claim your treasure.

I've found I can generally run circles around a Galleon. So if they do change I just point in a heading with the wind and hit full sails. They generally give up relatively quickly after that.

If you have awareness is almost impossible that a galleon will jump on you with no way to avoid it.

Sail AGAINST the wind with a good management of sails trimming and any reasonable galleon crew will give up, as they don't really know if you have booty or is worthy. If they are stubborn and annoying for no reason and you have not booty travel to the out of bounds area or scuttle the ship. If you have booty set the course free of obstacles near a harbour, jump with your chest and use the mermaid to go back to your ship, rinse and repeat and scuttle when done.

For example, last night I was taking on a fort with a friend, and we were just in a sloop (yeah IKR XD). We spotted a galleon coming up to us, so we braced for a fight. Turns out they were offering to help, but we didn't trust them to not take everything once the fort fell, so we played strategically. Now we were trapped between them in a rock so obviously we sunk, no biggy. We respawn and wait for them to finish the fort that we had essentially already finished. Once they do we go in for the kill, utilizing our speed and agility to swerve right up next to the ship so my mate can jump off. He gets on board and grabs a random chest. Later we realize he had grabbed the stronghold chest. In the end, there was no way we were going to be able to get everything from that fort, but the fact that we made off with the most valuable treasure shows that sloops can still stick it to the big guys, they just need to play it smart. Also this was following after hours of my playing by myself without a single problem. I promise you it can be done. Is it sometimes harder with less reward? Yes. Does that sometimes make it more fun? I definitely think so.

This weekend my boyfriend and I took a skull fort with a sloop and sunk another sloop and a galleon multiple times that both tried to come take it from us. Took down the NPC pirates, looted the whole thing and made off with the treasure.

Is it harder than with a galleon? Sure! But not impossible.

We also do a lot of our merchant missions on our sloop. Get in, get out, turn it in.

It's very doable, especially because galleons are kinda grail. We usually park nice, I guard boat and scout for other ships/wrecks while my mate goes for mission. We also fight a lot and generally sail with around 4k+ gold in our cargo without fear, no1 challenges us :(. If you are disciplined you can be very succesful both in pve and pvp as duo.

Galleon encounters depend on size of crew and their coordination. 3 man is easy to sink but good 4s kinda impossible. Fortunately galleon crews also can't angle sails properly so running away is easy option
