Quite an old thread, interesting to see it getting some attention again. @Bobbles31 not sure if you ever saw this, looks like its up your alley.

This was a necro but seeing as it's you what done it and I'm totally in the clear on this one I'll weigh in.

I rarely use external apps for games, though I do see some value to them. Elite Dangerous is the only game where I don't think I could function without my external apps. I wouldn't be against a SoT app but wouldn't want the focus to be on K:D etc.

I think if Rare were to go down the route of a SoT app it might be something they do in-house to incorporate functionality with the real money store once that's ready to go

I don't know if I am necroposting or anything but from the xbox app you can get some stats about the game. So I am guessing that if you are in the Xbox Live Creators Program you can access those stats with Xbox Live API. Than you can only fetch the data for your self or write some sort of middleware and expose them with a RESTful API for all the community. I do not know if this is really possibile nor if doing so go against some Microsoft policy but still I think is better than nothing and maybe worth a try.

A read-only API which is all we really need would not be able to be hacked because it is read-only data, generally was you temporality displace the data so it is only available at the end of the sessions etc. That way it can't be exploited in the current sessions, by yourself or others against you.

But it still very useful for stats collection, badges of honour, verification of community-driven events, etc..

Specifically, they said they don't like the idea of leaderboards... Which is kind of totally backtracking after they publish the community stats, during the alpha and beta. Including the most deadly pirate and a number of interesting and funny stats.

I am pretty sure Rare said there will be no API.

What does this have to do with xbox. An API would most likely be used by profile and web applications anyway. I doubt Rare will allow modding in this game. And even if they did, mods could also be made available on xbox.

Nothing, but i'm sure this xbox player here assumes anything that has 3rd party involved is an invitation for hacks.

ugh K/D stats... the moment that becomes popular and in the hands of the public this game will change for the worst...

On a positive note i would love someone to use the API to create a model viewer and inventory manager, along the lines of the one people created for Destiny 1, being able to swop out and view your equipment using an APK or IOS app. mainly for bragging rights

If they allow write permissions (e.g. sending commands to the game) then obviously it'll get hacked. If it's read-only (pulling stat data) then there's nothing to hack.

Anyway. I'd like, most, a GPS track history. I love the dotted line on the map, but I'd really love it if I could pull my travel history between specific timestamps.

It'd be trivial to hook up a google map, and be able to plot all-time and daily travel paths, along with stops made, and durations. I could easily also add a timeline feature, so you could have a slider at the bottom.

It'd be even cooler if it let me pull what I looted from each island. Then I could start to analyse my time efficiency by island, and see how that improved over time.

I'd also like a history timeline, detailing what I sold, when, and for how much.

json or xml. Doesn't matter.

You may add the following funny metrics:

• Average time spent to solve a riddle
• Pirate reach with own higher voyages than the rest
• Value of lost goods / plus average per session
• Value of goods gained "illegally" / plus average per session
• Time spent speaking in above average voice volume in voice chat
• Average time spent cursing
• Average time spent on respawn islands
• Level of Grogoholism
• Times puked
• Times puked on crew members
• Time spent in the pub
• Number of hostile encounters
• Number of friendly encounters
• Number of times turning friendly encounters into lootables
• Number of times brigged
• Max pig age

I would only be happy to see stats on benign things, such as distance travelled, chests collected that sort of thing, which I can do already in my xbox leaderboards (both on PC and Xbox).

I feel that if you start putting kills, raids and numbers of ships sunk type of stats into the game then that would instantly turn the game on its head. somehow (and i have seen this time and time again in countless other games) this then encourages those players that are just here to kill as many players as possible, so that they can be on the top of the leader board in some attempt to imply that they are better than someone else. These players tend not to have an interest in any other element of the game and don't care about those players that do, often they cannot even understand why other players are simply not interested in PVP all the time and why they would want to explore other elements of a game, its all about just being number one on the top of some table.

I believe that this would simply end up dividing a gaming community and causing so many headaches for the development team who would be faced with the constant barrage of complaints about unfair play, cheaters, toxic behaviour etc. and this would distract them from developing the game further as they intend and want to do.

I've said it before and will say it again, why try and bend a game into something it was never intended to be, why try and turn it into a stat fuelled Battle Royal, Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch killing fest like every other game on the market, and instead leave it as a Pirate Adventure, PVP/PVE Co-operation, Exploration game that it is, and if you want to spend a couple of hours running around just shooting other players solely for the bragging rights of being number one shooter, then use a game that has this designed into it from the get to, leave SOT alone.

I have faith that Rare does have some great content planned for SOT and given a little time it will all make its way into the game for those players that are screaming out for more content, but just because its not here just yet, why try and break a game because of being inpatient, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

My friend wrote a script that lets him ring the ships bell 10000 times a second. It's pretty annoying. Our captain hates it.

I'd be mostly just interested in a nice 'Your Legend' page which displays cool stats about my journey. Things like number of gold voyages successful and total gold earned.

The problem will be mostly that the endpoints will have encrypted data.

We definitely need this, someone can post this on the feedback + suggestions topic ?

I believe they already stated no API.

There's an awful lot of claim on what everyone wants for something that appears only yourself is arguing for.

Quite simply it won't happen however. Rare have said they don't want it and more importantly Microsoft own it and they aren't even selling this on steam yet, let alone giving out API for people to poke around in and generally mess it all up.
