I tried to hang if off the side of the ship and it still filled the boat..... but maybe I wasn't far enough over.
Sure fire way I found was to jump ship and wait out the crying.
It works on the galleon; it does not work on the sloop. Just like the galleon barely gets hit by skeleton cannons; the sloop takes just about every cannonball up the keister.
