Make ambushes and pvp better by hiding other crew's names
-
@ser-pineapples its not a sniper game and tbh if the person is visible on a pc screen/tv then in the real world you woild of spotted them a age ago. this way you can still use sneek tactics but you would need to be sly about it rather than just juml on a boat wait till they are distracted and shoot them in the back. you have to include some skill and as i saod it isnt sniper elite its sea of thieves. who heard of pirate camo
-
@lumpaywk Haha I don't mean modern camo but I def want to blend in with the environment. Imagine if it's night-time and you don't see who is walking in the bushes until they're right in your face or you raise the lantern. That's what I'm trying to get at
-
Didn't read everything, but we had no trouble yesterday running all over people's boats without being seen. I don't think the gamertags are an issue.
I mean, seriously, I ran from the cabin balcony of a galleon, through the cabin, and down into the front of the bottom level carrying a big red keg. If I was going to be spotted, it would not have been due to my gamertag. -
@erikinthebakery Take my upvote because that takes guts. Though it could've been they were new players or you have one heck of a timing ;)
-
@ser-pineapples There could be a crouch option that makes you move at the same speed as carrying a chest and it hides your gamertag. Or you could have the ability to hide in an empty barrel, like hiding in a box in Metal Gear Solid. Fully removing it just hurts the ability to make friends with other crews.
As @erikinthebakery said, It's not too difficult to get on an enemy ship without them knowing.
-
@ser-pineapples The poor soul I waved to in the brig before I shot said barrel implied to me me they were understaffed.
-
@lonegoatknifer Oh I know it's easy to get on-board, but it's hard to stay on it without them knowing shortly thereafter :P
-
@ser-pineapples Would it really be any different without a gamertag? If someone sees you on their ship with no gamertag, it would be the same as seeing a white one. The ships aren't really big enough to hide on long term.
-
@lonegoatknifer You're right. But I wasn't intending to make the most out of it on ships tho. The comments immediately above were just fun stories^^ and not to be interpreted as scenarios/justifications why I want invisible GT
-
Getting rid of other players names basically guarantees everyone you meet will be an enemy.
In alpha, half the people we found acted friendly, the others were enemies. Without names, guaranteed they'd all have been enemies and you'd have nothing to call out to for parlay.
Bad idea. Killing players is already easy.
-
I support changing how the gamertag is shown. However I don't think it should be completely removed.
I would suggest that it take 5 to 10 seconds, maybe more maybe less, for a players gamertag to appear. That way if you're trying to hide from someone, they can' just spasticly look around until they see your gamertag in a bush or underwater or something.
-
@signusm I think you may have dismissed this a little too quickly. Yes, fully removing them is a bad idea, but some amount of stealth wouldn't be (I gave a couple ideas in another post). Lets say you end up in a 1v4 battle, being able to hide close to the enemy, rather than behind a mountain, could make it a lot more interesting fight. If I, as the solo player, can run from the enemy and then crouch in some bushes to hide, I might stand a better chance against 4 people chasing me down. Keep in mind those 4 people could do the same thing and just ambush me, but they would probably just go in guns blazing assuming they will win.

That's fair enough. Having a mechanic to willingly hide your name would indeed by a boon. I don't think it should be super easy though. I doubt the infrastructure exists to detect if you're hiding in a bush. So the stop gap may be, while crouching, your name is hidden unless a cursor is directly on you?
-
I've had several instances where I saw the GT first, and not the player... I personally don't like that, and if I'm trying to hide, I don't want that to be the first thing that people see while I'm wearing green, hiding in some bushes with treasure.
I think it should have a 2 second delay fade in , and only be visible from within about 10 feet.
-
@signusm I was thinking people would just need to have a keen eye. Having the cursor show the name could cause people to just spin around like fools until a name pops up.
-
@skeletonpiratex 2 seconds is probably longer than you think.
The name showing from 10 feet away could make it hard to tell if a teammate is carrying your chest or an enemy is running away with it. If you use your scope should it show their name? Currently i can have a hard time differentiating an enemy from a teammate if they are too far.

Not if it has to be on them for a second or so, it's worked well in other PvP games.
-
Yeah. Have wanted that for a long time. What should be used to tell players apart is how their character looks, the clothes they're wearing, the player's voice, and player behavior.
Gamertags should not be visible to players outside your crew. This game has nearly zero stealth as it is currently and that's not okay. There is not much surprising or unpredictability going on in Sea of Thieves even with the field of view limited to 90.
Hopefully we'll indeed be able to crouch but I'd like it so the gamertags of other players are only be visible when:
- They are in your crew.
- When you're on the Ferry of the Damned.
- And (if this is hopefully added) when you go up to another player and initiate a "share" interaction and agree to share gamertag.
It was nice to see the "make friend" emote but I'd really like to see further functionality in-game between players.
A share interaction is what could be used to view gamercard, add as friend, trade (if we ever get a player driven economy; or even if we don't), invite to crew (if the awful matchmaking into a random group is changed), share gamertag (which lasts for an appropriate amount of time) and whatever else might be good and useful. -
@ser-pineapples Yes i understand that and what your saying. However... even though gamers going to forums is more popular now, not everybody does. Some people just want to get in and play the game and not have to read articles on it. That is part of the player base. Yes the name is SEA OF THIEVES but its also a game designed to be fun. That is the purpose of its cartoony nature im sure. Its not a game meant to be in the PUBG genres where a tactical advantage matters. Just seeing you in this forum means you had a ton of fun playing this game just as I did even though we have different opinions on where it should go or be. I think they have a great view of what they want this game to be and I'll leave it at that. I dont want them to build game perfect for me per say, but a game that is fun for everyone, even the players that arent the best. Look at Nintendo... They make what they make and dont give in to what everyone wants and they are on top.
I grew up playing RARE games and they were the best at what they did before they dropped off into the shadows for a while. I want them to get as much as every player base they can so they can get back to where they once were.
Our opinions matter when it comes to fixing problems, bugs, glitches... but when it is suggesting different game mechanics that change the game style... then thats enough.

@ser-pineapples I like your way of thinking. Sneaking around and ambushing people on islands is the best isn't it?! I use Fortnite for my examples a lot, and the same goes here. In Fortnite you can hide very easily to create an ambush situation. Adds another level of fun to the game and gives smaller crews a better chance against foes of superior number.
Gunpowder barrel ambush all the way.
*Sails up to outpost and spyglasses the area, sees mermaid in water and gunpowder barrel next to turn in tent. Chuckle to myself F'no...sets course for next outpost.

Using the "sit" emote makes your GT way less visible.
It's the most stealth thing SoT has right now. lol
But yeah... It is not a solution.
-
@perfect-code I agree, no "solution" needed when there is no real problem. GTs are fine the way they are.
-
I like the idea man,
I think maybe a crouch button that allows you to hide your name and person better. In the end there will be two camps on all games... Those that like easy and those who like it hard.
I like hard games, make it as real as possible and if you can't do it in real life at the time you can't do it in the game.
It makes a lot of people cry when a game is too hard so game makers make soft easy games for people. Taking away the names of the other crews would make it too hard for people to be spotted so they most likely wont do it.A dam shame.
-
@ser-pineapples
You neglected to answer this question m8!!
"And if you can, name me a few other popular multiplayer games where you don't see the GT of your opponents??" -
@SignusM Actually I disagree with what most people are saying about "removing GT will guarantee everyone's a foe." Take meeting new people in real life for example, you don't have to know their names before you introduce yourselves or to make small talk; if things go well, you made yourself a new friend [confetti]. Same goes to in-game I believe, if you both are not acting aggressive, then I believe you can still make friends/alliances. @Perfect-Code suggested a great solution to this as well.
@The-Lion-Turtle I share @LONEGOATKNIFER initial apprehension about the players' would scan the screens with their mouses (I forgot the term used for people who does this in old puzzle games). Even with the X seconds for GT to show if targeted with cursor, it could make players do the same thing but at a slower pace.
@Perfect-Code I really like the "share contacts" emote idea. It's solves a lot problems other's have brought up. If you trust a person, you can share info. Genius!
Yeah, @FireTadpole7469 they should definitely bring it back. Perhaps it can be combined with @Perfect-Code idea where:
- green is your crew
- white is your allies
- red is people who either you killed/they killed you
An undoubtedly valid concern brought up is how to report players? I'd say to know their GT you either need to kill them or be killed by them and you shall get their names as a message.
@mich2mars I see you're a man of culture too. This was the 'creativity' I was referring at in my previous comments ;)
@SkeletonPirateX I don't think GT revealing just because they happen to be standing near you is unfair, and I'm not American but 10 feet is a lot if I'm not mistaken.
Now as for stealth mechanic, I liked @FonZaye suggestion of a crouch button during which your GT is hidden. To build off from that I suggest, the players cannot move while crouched, and their reload animation should make the gun point above, so people can spot precisely where the shot came from to balance the mechanic.
@BiggX01 I really like your comment because of how respectful you are and therefore you have my respect. I see you where you're coming from and I get it but there's an argument to be made where winning games relies on one's ability to utilize tactical advantage/thinking, even in rudimentary games like tic-tac-toe one needs to use tactics. We both want the best for Sea of Thieves and for it to have more players, I just think implementing a rudimentary crouch button would appeal to some other PvP players out there (I mean look at Rainbow 6 Siege, PUBG and Fortnite) and bring more players to Sea of Thieves. Now I'm not saying Rare should sell out from their original vision but imo a crouch button would amplify the already existing PvP experience. As for the players who just want to get in and relax, that's still is a viable option. Sea of Thieves was meant to be played as you want to play it.
@LogansDadToo Payday 2.
-
@ser-pineapples I agree, tags should be removed, or at least only shows when you have line of sight at very close range. But first they need to revisit the spawning mechanic. Right now, the losing players are encouraged to grief the winners, and the winners HAVE TO spawn camp the losers unless they want to get griefed. Not very fun.
Ideally, I'd like to see a few different options on the Ferry of the Damned, something like this:
- Spawn on your ship, if it's still afloat
- Spawn on the nearest island.
- Spawn on an island 4-5 minutes sailing away.
That way you could choose to leave them to it, and avoid the circle of grief-spawncamp-grief that occurs with the system we saw in the beta.
-
@logansdadtoo I can't be bothered.
Look just because it's not the norm doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.
