Make ambushes and pvp better by hiding other crew's names

  • @lonegoatknifer

Many other people already told what issues it would bring to have GT invisible.

  • @vandaelium You didn't read very many posts did you?

  • @lonegoatknifer

What has THAT to do with this situation?..

  • It is relevant because the first couple posts discuss a different way of handling it than some later ones.

    @aprovoked-mango

    You're right

all these suggestions only will bring more issues. not solve them

By saying that you dismissed all the reasonable suggestions about how some stealth could be added that myself and several others have discussed. I'm not going to repeat it all again, but you are more than welcome to scroll up and take a look.

  • @lonegoatknifer

    Alright.

Stealth can be cool, but also a big issue ingame.

Good luck with finding the middle ground

  • @ser-pineapples
I had my ship sink while anchored at an island once.
I dragged the chest on land and hid it, I then tried to hide on the island until the enemies left.

It almost worked, but they saw my bloody gamertag and found me.
    It was really disappointing...

As for all the people saying that it will help ruin the game because it will encourage PvP...
Why are you buying a game about Pirates, literally called "Sea of Thieves" if you don't like the idea of pirates attacking you and stealing your treasure?

  • @logansdadtoo
What if they did it like "Ark: Survival Evolved"?
In that game you can only see the gamer tags of random players if they are literally standing right in front of you.
It also keeps track of who you killed and who killed you.

Its a win win. Player positions won't be immediately given away. And the wee ones can still report people.

People love anonymity, its what makes people idiots on the internet.

I should make this my forum sig...

Newsflash, the game is called Sea of Thieves. :P

Not all thieves are cutthroats and petty criminals... Robin Hood was a thief, so is Garrett in the "Thief" games. Have you ever heard of the concept, "honor among thieves?"

And could you please get off the, "it's a pirate game," "it's what pirates do!" rhetoric, as if roleplaying as a pirate is of the upmost importance to you... you are using this as a convenient argument to justify your own, personal behavior you'd like to partake in the game.

Because it's being marketed as a shared-world adventure game that is welcoming to new players that allows them to play how they want? Yeah, I know, I'm reaching a bit... (sarcasm)

  • @h0rse
At the same time its being marketed as a pirate game.
You don't need to be a member of Mensa to figure out that people are going to act like......Pirates?
Especially if you watched the trailer, or played the beta, or read the forums, or read the game description.... or read the title.

  • @sloth-demon-685
Yes, but it's a shame those same people didn't bother to read the history of pirates!!
As pirates didn't behave like moral less murdering idiots who destroyed boats for fun or to annoy their fellow pirates!!

I was just going to bring this point up. Thanks for saving me the effort.

  • @lonegoatknifer agreed. I have tried to be friendly in alpha and beta but everyone was hostile. I have not run across 1 friendly ship yet. That is why I bring up the factions. Because chances of me running across someone of the same faction raises the chance of a friendly ship... seeing a hostile ship in my experience has been 100% so far... however that would not mean the chance of the same faction being 100% friendly because everyone has the choice of deciding how they would react to every ship anyway.

But as I have contemplated more on this topic I have seen how popular the chat is about PVE players and PVP players. I offer a Idea for the PVE/PVP scenario with the factions playing a role. The ROYAL NAVY could be for the Player with PVE in mind to where everyone in the ROYAL NAVY must be friendly to one another. With that raising the PVE aspect for them knowing they do not have to worry about any Royal Navy (their faction) being hostile but they still must be on guard with Pirates. Then you have the PIRATES that can attack anyone and everyone they want. That will obviously be the PVP minded individuals and unpredictable. Would that be enough to keep PVE players content and also the PVP Pirates? I have read that there are supposed to be 100 players on a map at a time so the seas will get much busier after release.

  • @lonegoatknifer Ok since people are so worried about verbal assault... stealth would require someone to be quiet. If someone is talking while crouched, then their GT is raised with a speaker next to their name. Problem solved ! :)

  • @ser-pineapples May I suggest after you are killed buy a player, as the screen goes white and you are transported to the ferry of the damned, it shows the players name so if you are being camped or grieved etc. they can be reported without ruining immersion

  • @vandaelium The middle ground would be there is no invisible GT if someone is talking. There would be no invisible verbal harassment since being stealthy requires someone to be quiet in the 1st place. But the invisible GT does serve a purpose if someone is outnumbered and they just want to sit back and wait for them to leave. There is no possible way that would add problems but add a way for solo players or even 2 man crews to possibly avoid engaging in a losing battle.

    1. Verbal assault of idiots hiding in bushes saying dumb things would not happen if their GT would be visible whenever they talk and that would prevent crouching ninja verbal assaults.
    2. crouching hiding the GT is only applied when being static or a slow crouch walk. If there would be a crouch sprint in which i see no purpose for it would raise the GT again.

Please tell me how that would create more problems? It would rather solve problems for smaller crews. Not everyone wants to engage in a fight every time they see a ship or player(s), especially if they know the odds are greatly against them.

  • i agree!

Imo, if you get ambushed at an outpost then you're either
    (a) Reckless: for even trying to cash out your loot on an outpost with another ship docked on it.
    (b) Not good at PvP: Even if the other crew scuttled their ship to hide themselves better, you must not ever let your guard down. Even if you got unlucky/outmatched, SoT is designed to let skills triumph. It's not griefing; it's by design.

Besides if you do get successfully ambushed, they deserve your loot. The amount of planning it takes to successfully pull-out an ambush takes patience, creativity and experience.

I, for one, congratulate the crew that stole my loot instead of whining about it on the forums because what else did you expect from a game where everyone's a pirate.

Also, there is no way of "reporting" pirates. I can't imagine why you even need other's GTs besides the good ol' 'name-and-shame' approach.

EDIT: Also people are not "idiots" on the internet because anonymity, it's because they can't be touched in real life by their victim. So unless you can figure out where people live or their personal info or you're someone who don't know how to let things go, I doubt knowing their GT would change the outcome at all.

    A lot of this.

I do agree with hiding Gamertags simply for water purposes. So many times I have seen people under a galleon, not because I saw their body, but because I saw their name text.

    (a) Neither Robin Hood nor Garrett had cannons. Pirates used to either extort their loot from their victims or kill them for it (Surprise! I, too, know my pirate history).

    (b) Actually I find it amusing that both you and @LogansDadToo just assumed I'm this ruthless PvP oriented player that just doesn't bother doing voyages and just outpost camp. Anyone who actually played with me knows for a fact that I love doing riddles and treasure maps (and I'm excited for the Merchants' Guild) [Two guilds that are not combat-oriented, mind you]; I like to give other players a wide-berth when I can and that I don't like to attack other crews unless they fire first. See? People are not always what they appears to be. Now then with that said, how about you two get off from your high horses and attack the ideas, instead of the people behind the ideas. You'll never make any progress by trying to belittle your opponents, in fact if anything it makes you look irrational and weakens your own credibility and it simply makes make other just doubling-down in their own trenches - deepening the divide between people.

  • I don't think crouch is a good solution as you won't be able to hide on a ladder etc. I think enemy GT should only appear if you hold your cursor on him for longer than 2 seconds and in 6 meters or so range (so you won't be able to look at random bushes from a far, hoping to get the gamertag of a hiding pirtate. This will let us hide and allow for friendly interactions when need be.

  • @captain-surgee Hmm it's going to be hard to hide on an enemy ship's ladder even without GT because it's not hard to for the other crew to notice there's someone idle on their sides.

You were a bit vague about the default state of the GT. Do you mean you want the GT to be invisible by default and it to be visible by having the cursor on players for longer than 2s and in range of 6m?

The cursor-on-target idea has been proposed before but personally I'm not keen on because (a) it's a delicate balance between the timer and range for it to work and to make crouch not viable and to minimize brute-force trial and error. (b) I personally like the idea the players themselves have to find hiding players in the same way we don't have UI for aiming cannons like in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, for example, but again that's my opinion. I wouldn't mind it too much if it was implemented, but it's not what I would've implemented, if you know what I mean.

  • @ser-pineapples
A similar approach was used in Ark. You could see gamertag of a foe only when aiming at him and at a very close distance. It worked great.

  • yeah It's the one think I don't like. There are many solutions that would be better, but having the GT up really breaks the immersion a lot, as does the isand names popping up. The problem with immersion is that its key to a game like this, and the very smallest slip up wipes it all.

  • @captain-surgee I find myself wanting to like this, but I can't. There are a few situations, as of right now, that I can think of where this might get a little annoying.

Someone could find players with just dumb luck. If you happen to be close and look in the right direction the name would pop up. If it was dark enough, the person hiding might not have been seen, at least not because of the gamertag. Or I could be hiding behind some barrels and the enemy is looking right at them. If a small bit of my character stuck out and they didn't notice, it could trigger the name pop up.

Let's say I decided to tag along on another players ship (in a friendly way). That person would still be considered an enemy and I would have to be 'x' distance away and look at them for 'y' amount of seconds. If it's a galleon, I don't really want to have to do that every time I need to know who someone is.

Maybe you think I'm just being picky. That's fair. But, stealth/name removal needs to be put in perfectly or it can cause more problems than it fixes. Some amount of stealth can benefit everyone. PvP players get to sneak up on their victims and PvE players get to hide from people better. That being said, too much might not be best for the game.

  • Just make it so the gamer tag can't be seen through objects. This way people can hide at least

  • Please add a crouch button, only commenting to show support of this feature being added.

  • @delayedodin1611 I forgot I've started this topic so long ago. I assumed it would have died in depths with other posts.

(Have a token of my appreciation: a comment)

  • I would really like the name tag removed. It would not take long before ppl get familiair with it and start to notice other ppl caracteristics and clothes and start to recognize them. Like in the real world.

Or as said before, nametag is only visible when you look in someones hitbox. But when the person is crouching the nametag stays hidden. (Not for crew members)

It also fits in perfectly with Rare's minimal hud vision.

But ok, this is probably to much to ask for. (Hope not)
At least make it so that we can crouch and then our gametag is removed while crouching.

This would be a super cool feature for sneaking and also for fleeing/hiding.

Edit.... Or give us a potion that removes the gamerstag for a limited time!! :''D
