[Mega Thread] - Cross Play (Part 1)

@xdilligafx1974 Thank you for clearing that up! Deckhand xDILLIGAFx1974 to the rescue!!! :D

Definately better with CrossPlay. I don't see much advantage either way.

  • 1

I see pros and cons for cross play, for myself the heaviest weighing of either would be the cons. As a PC player I've noticed very quickly that when someone spends $2000 on a gaming machine they generally tend to be more interested and invested in gaming than someone who spends $500 on a gaming machine. As a result I find PC players tend to be more cooperative and more skilled than the Xbox players. Not to say there aren't exceptions there are for sure, but when I do get matched with someone who is on the ship but isn't playing, or players that wont help out with the more mundane tasks in game (collecting resources, moving sails), or with bad/nonexistent communication, or just in general bad teammates 99% of the time they are playing on an Xbox.

  • 3

I really like the availability of cross-play, I'm a console gamer while my friends are mostly PC. However I already ran into someone in-game on PC that was using Macro's. He had it set to blunderbuss and then immediately switch and fire the pistol. It was basically a double tap. Being on console I actually managed to hit him with my blunderbuss but before I could do anything I was dead. I couldn't even switch to my sword and that's what I was trying to do.
They're gonna have to come up with a balance solution for console gamers or that whole group of people will quit playing.

The cross game seems perfect to me, as I said before, It seems perfect to me, that they created an interface (UI) for xbox, it facilitates the use equally in both platforms.

Otherwise it the game PUG, which has created a UI designed for the Mause, clearly affecting the gameplay in the xbox control.

I've only seen a strange problem that tends to be the opposite.

When aiming, the sight moves slower in the Mause unlike when you use an Xbox Control.

They should only allow people to have sensitivity adjustments at the time of aiming.

i dont know if you are aware of too maney people are using locking people in the brig opion too much for no reason maybe this opion needs to be disableor changed. thanks

I absolutely loved playing with other people from other consoles. I also had to the opportunity to play from PC and Xbox One. On PC, I tried both Keyboard/Mouse and also an Xbox One controller. All experiences were great!

@dielikekane The death of console gaming begins :/

  • 0

@ant-heuser-kush I'm not against crossplay but I can see where they're coming from, you sound like a PC player looking for easy targets tbh.

  • 0

@ant-heuser-kush Fair enough, you still can't pretend there's not a "skill" gap between console and PC, it's widely known to be true.

  • 1

@ant-heuser-kush Like I said, it doesn't scare me either I don't mind cross play, but lets not pretend it's an even playing field.

  • 1

@ant-heuser-kush I mean anyone who plays on PC regularly will be better at aiming than anyone on console, that's a fact, mouses just faster and more precise, there is not getting around that fact.

  • 4

Just put an option in menus for cross play enable/disable like in for exemple Rocket League and everybody is happy. Instances are made on the go anyway so it shouldn't be hard to implement.

I like this idea. I'm a PC player and would love to play with console players, but fully appreciate they may wish not to.

@gulpee-rex It's easy to tell. If you get attacked by someone who jumps around like a damn gummi bear while doing headshots in mid-air...that's a PC player. If a ship full of skilled PC players spot you from a distance, you'll die from a rain of sniper shots. If they get too close, you have even less chance of survival. Whoever doesn't believe in big advantage of mouse users should watch some of that twitch streams. I felt like I'm watching Quake Arena at times. If cross-play will not be optional, we'll see PC players ruling the seas, while console players will just try to go as quickly as possible from one point to another, praying to not get attacked. If you guys like to play against PC players, go for it, but give us an option to turn it off.

@williamherschel I only found 1 advantage so far if you can even call it that. The rotation speed on Xbox seems to be very limited compared to PC. A friend of mine was Headbanging with a music instrument on his pc I tried to do the same with my controller but speed would not go up any further xD

  • 0

I think it's fine... we PC players have a slight advantage when in actual close combat, as mouse is just superior to controllers. I can tell when playing against a console player, as they have that tell tale, constant slow spin.

I've played mostly on Xbox during Alpha, but game feels a lot better and faster paced on PC.

I'd like more players in a session.

  • 0

Tbh i like the cross-play concept.. Its only too bad it is ONLY for XBOX, would have loved to see it on my Nintendo Switch for example.

Another thing what i think is a shame, is that the game only works on windows 10. And i think this is because of the cross play with xbox? Is it not possible for people with for example windows 7 to fire up the game and enjoy? A lot of people i know use windows 7 and are now due to this unable to join the game. Which is kind of a shame really.

As a PC player, getting into a group of Xbox players who are not using the in game chat (but using the wrong chat), then send you to the brig because they think you have no mic, gets kind of old. Force Xbox players to use the correct chat while logged into SoT.

  • 1

@knightx13 Cross play is a great idea. My group is fractured because of our differing platforms. We were able to group up together as a result of cross play.

I can understand some of the issues presented on this thread, such as different VOIP systems, but I think the benefit is greater.

  • 0

I as a PC player strongly think our fellow Xbox mates and pirates are verry skilled with their controllers and i don't see the problem to be honest...maybe i'm blind or something. My 2man sloop team-mate which i always play with never pointed out any problems regarding cross-play. And considering the fact that we play a darn lot we should have seen the difference or the slight advantages but i really haven't seen any, again sorry if i'm wrong and we just haven't encountered them for some reason. Keep the cross-play it's very nice to meet people from the xbox side! almost all of them are very social and nice team-mates to have! Don't separate us!

  • 1

@drachmul I agree, keep us together. I think that PC players get a much smoother combat experience when firing the guns, but it's a smaller gap than would be present with other shooting games. I think the reason is the flintlock firing guns we're using.

I am playing on PC with a really good rig and the one of the best peripherals and I also lie, if I'd say I didn't noticed an advantage over other players who certainly used a controller. (mostly man vs man, where the rifle or sword was dominant, but I bet the same applies on the ship battles too) I have Xbox One controller too, but never switched it on as the M/K works perfectly with me. Also never met a lot of other player out of this forum who has never concerned about PC vs Console controls, but I played alongside slightly more from Xbox than PC. (nearly asked them every time which platform they got there). I am with cross-play idea as this game built on many other factors too, which effects on the final outcome of a battle.
slightly related question, any of You has experienced that he can't move or block during sword fights, like your character would just stuck or freeze?? (independently from which platform You playing on?)

  • 1

I don't like it as they have to keep the game simple for console and likely the game will never reach its full potential. I wish they'd make it PC only or completely separate from console.

  • 3

TBH I like the option for cross play. I actually convinced a pc gamer friend of mine with it cause he gets to play with me and a few other friends. It's true they MIGHT have an advantage but if you somehow manage to balance that out for Xbox players with better sensitivity options, aim assist and maybe something else I cant really think of it should be fine in theory. Once players tinker around with their sensitivity and get it right they'l be fine and be able to respond as quick as others.

Best play to start crossplay is this game I think. I am both PC and console player and I played this on my console all the time because I find it mutch easier to stear the boat and sail with gamepad.

Maaaaybe only thing when on a console is when PC players snipe you, but other than that I see now problem at all in this game. I am really positive to the crossplay.

I find it weird that some says 2 monitors is an advantage in Sot, how can that be?
How can anything other than maybe the rifle aim bad for console player?

  • 2

With somewhere north of 350 hours of time in both the Alphas and this most recent Beta, I have only found three noticeable problems with cross play.

First off, it has thus far been rare, but I have seen people obviously using some sort of external macro in order to switch weapons and fire instantly one after another. My fear is that once the game is in release if this is possible it will become the new normal for PC players.

The second issue is the strafe combat with a mouse user. There have been many instances of fighting people in close quarters, (it seems to make a no difference at distance), where an opponent using a PC can strafe entirely to the back of a console user at a speed faster than their rate of turning in place. It is rather frustrating to be jabbed in the back with the sword and be completely unable to turn and shoot faster than he can maintain his position at your back. I guarantee you cannot do this with a controller on the Xbox, but apparently you can from a PC.

Finally, there is the small but potentially advantageous problem with group chat. Apparently, if you are in an extrrnal group chat on a PC you can still hear and speak to your crew in game chat. Frankly if Xbox users can’t do something, then PC users shouldn’t be able to do it either.

If I had to choose one of these to be fixed I would go for the strafing issue. If sideways movement and turning rate on a PC could be capped at the maximum rate possible on the Xbox, the problem would not exist. As it stands now, however, when I have a choice I melee at distance or limit myself to ship to ship combat.

The crossplay is great, makes for more people to play with so I'm all for that.

I have to say I noticed pc players have an advantage over console players mostly in close combat situations. The turning on console is just so slow by the time you turn around you will be dead. Would be a much bigger issue if getting killed had more negative consequences.

  • 1

@williamherschel My friend is playing on PC but using gamepad.
I think this should answer your concerns about advantages.

@dielikekane This picture looks fake to me.
Why would MS advertise Logitech keyboard while they have their own keyboards to sell?
On top of that, keyboard layout on that picture is US which is not available in Europe (it is unique to US and CAD) by Logitech decision.
Because of that stupidity I had to import two G910 keyboards from US to fit my layout needs.

  • 1

cant xbox now allow mouse and keyboard? i perso ally love cross play becajse then i can sail with my kids and help them out as they are quite young but love the game. i think there needs to be some assists to help controller play, be it on pc or console with a controller. thr game is slow paced enough though that it hardly makes a difference.
like my suggestion for haveing the option to choose solo only servers or solo and group server there should be an option for pc, xbox or both. there will be millions of players accross thousands of server instances it cant be that hard to add options.

First, for me CrossPlay is probably the biggest feature of SoT. Not only allows me for huge flexibility, but also all my friends.

Nothing more annoying if some of Your friends are playing on PC, some on XBO and some on PS4 (I know Sony's toy won't matter with SoT). Here, everyone can play however I like, and none of us have to make any compromises between "on which platform should we all agree"

However, there are some downsides, including f.e. problems with GameChat at the moment, majority of players using XBL Party chat instead of GameChat, or even the neverending "Fetching the Message of the Day" on PC, if You're running Your Win10 on any other language than English (UK).

I hope these problems will be solved, and we will all enjoy crossplay in full dimension.

    And btw.

    NO.

The PC players don't have advantage as it stands.
I'm really mediocre in aiming with the controller, but know many players who has much better aim than those who use PC's mouse and keyboard.
It's about Your skills, not the fact which one are You using.

crossplay? I want pop-up messages when a xboxplayer invites me for a party or adds me as a friend. During the Beta I was always ALT+TABbing to try to respond to messages arriving through the xbox app. This connectivity to the game may be increased in favor to the PC users, so that they can also add people to their party during game, or invite people without having to restart the game. Most of the time when I partied with Xboxplayers they would always have to wait for me (PC) like 10 minutes to connect, furthermore I couldn't let them know I was on my way without minimising or restarting the game.

the crossplay feature is good, love that you can play xbox-pc, makes the game more accessable.
downside is the xbox-app on PC doesn't function like it does on the Xbox 1, so partying and joining friends is a hell on pc in comparison to the easy xbox 1 click and go style..

also the M+K vs controller thingy.. It's just your personal skillset and reactionspeed. I've encoutered lots of players who prefer the controller over a keyboard, and on pc still use a xbox-controller. Tried it myself and barely notice the difference.

@karstenx1971 I bet they will find a way to fix that and if they don’t find another server and stop being a baby

I considered this game, from the very start, a community driven game based on friends forming an adventure together in a new and exciting way. So therefore, crossplay has been a wonderful addition to this game. Remove crossplay and I will be sad, given the amount of friends I have who can only play on one or the other system.

My second thought on this matter is how many people are complaining about the PvP, specifically who has the "advantage" in combat. Although this game has alot of players fighting it out over treasure and soon to be other precious items, this is not necessarily a PvP game like Call of Duty or League of Legends. This game is a little to "cartoony" for serious PvPing and/or Competitive PvP.

For all those who are complaining about the advantages and what not, I see your point I understand and I agree. However I like to play with my friends and I dont care if my ship sinks because someone could "Aim Faster" than me.

In short please keep it about the adventures and being able to play with my friends via crossplay, and let the competitive players find their competition in competitive oriented PvP Games.
