Would this be a good laptop for gaming?
-
@cheatingpirate Honestly I'd take a gander at the stuff on Overclockers. They usually sell pre-builds designed for specific games and I'd probably aim for those. Might even find a deal on their at some point, who knows? All I know is it's where I get all my pc stuff from and so far has never let me down in the years I have used them.
-
@cheatingpirate That really depends. I'm not sure if the specs got released yet? What I'd honestly do would be to see what other games have the same kind of specs (Say like Over Watch if it matched for instance) and look at a laptop that has the ability to run that. You're on a safe bet they would also run it. I do recommend the Intel over AMD simply due to the issues I've had in the past with their processors and games.

@cheatingpirate this was mentioned as a 'ballpark' for possible minimum spec here https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/17441/pc-update-18-10-2017
OS: “Windows 10 Anniversary” (1607)
CPU: Intel i3 @2.9GHz / AMD FX-6300 @3.5GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 650 / AMD Radeon 7750
RAM: 4GB
DirectX: 11
VRAM: 1GB
HDD: 60GB @5.4k RPMEdit: This is for 720p@30fps+.

@triheadedmonkey
The laptop I am looking at:
OS: Windows 10 Home/Pro
Processor: 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7300HQ Quad Core (6MB Cache, up to 3.5 GHz)
Memory: 8GB, 2400MHz, DDR4; up to 32GB
Hard Drive: 1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive with 8GB Cache
Video Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5
Display: 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit DisplayI don't know much about computers.... But still, would this computer fit the bill?
-
@cheatingpirate looks like it would at least be better than minimum spec...at least I hope so because my PC sounds fairly similar haha :D
If you are aiming for running it at Max settings then someone MUCH better informed than myself would be better suited to answer
.....would probably benefit from having an external mouse too as I can't see a trackpad being of much use
EDIT: I only really commented as someone mentioned not seeing the specs being released, and although this isn't an official minimum, it's a good place to start from. I am fairly sure that I have seen someone say they have played it 'decently' on a system that surprised most people.
-
@triheadedmonkey I have an external mouse already lol.
And if it's just above minimum specs, what would be a better laptop for MAX settings?
-
@cheatingpirate If you can afford it, check an Asus ROG laptop, they start around 1000$ or so I think, really good specs.
-
@cheatingpirate as we don't know what will be needed to get the "max" settings its kind of hard to tell you exactly what to get.
And max settings go wide as well... want 4k and 60fps? You´ll probably need a desktop computer. 1080 and 60fps? laptop sounds possible. But I can give out some general pointers from my point of view:
For ram go more than 8gb, I have an Asus ROG laptop with 16gigs and 8 is always used, so its safe to go up from 8. Windows 10 is usually recommended with 8. But if you want to game... more is always better.CPU - I prefer Intel, 6 or 7th gen i5 will be more than enough.(i7 is nice but the gains are not that high)
for GPUs - I personally prefer Nvidia, to futureproof you should look out to gtx 10 series, with at least 4gb of memory(if possible).Hard drives don't matter that much but go for SSDs and systems with multiple hard drives (perhaps m3 stick and with an ordinary SSD/HDD) so you can run OS on one drive and keep data on another.
But keep in mind that setup with similar specs will cost around 1.2-1.5k or even more depending on the manufacturer, screen, cooling, weight etc. You´ll be better off waiting for official requirements lanch and then getting a machine that meets those - that will save you money. But buying high up will get you VR support and futureproofing for few years... so there is that.
Or buy an Xbox one X - that will save you money no matter what - but there are obvious downsides that that aswell.
My two cents.

@lucky-monkee Huh, alright then. Is there a link to the one you have? Or, would THIS one be a good one? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-gl502vm-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i7-12gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-1tb-hard-drive-black/5712362.p?skuId=5712362&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=38b66a31-cf61-4094-9e34-54b8cbb1187b&ksprof_id=8&ksaffcode=pg198982&ksdevice=c&lsft=ref:212,loc:2

@cheatingpirate the first one you posted will run the game well. The specs are close to my PC, it will run the game well. I have an older AMD processor, same amount of RAM at a slower speed I think, and a GTX 1050ti. I'm not sure the exact frame rate I had so I can't guarantee 60fps with mythical settings, but the frame rate was always over the 30fps that I get on my Xbox One S. It's noticably higher.
-
@cheatingpirate the most important thing will be too make sure that the graphics card has at least 4gb ram onboard and is a GTX1050 or better. That Asus ROG with the GTX 1050 will give you higher frame rates and the 12gb of system RAM compared to 8gb in the Dell will help a bit, but whether there's worth an extra $400 is up to you. I just wanted to give you an idea of how it will run because it is so close to my specs. You can push 4k with it, but not smoothly. 1080p with mythical settings is stunning.
-
@drbullhammer Holy cow. So both the Dell Inspiron and the Asus RoG that I brought up would be very good choices? That is music to my ears. Thanks!
-
@drbullhammer Hmmm alright. Sorry, I don't know much about computer specs... So, Which one of them do you think is a better deal?
-
@cheatingpirate if you wait until after some new play sessions, I'll be able to give you more info about how my PC runs it. I'll let you know frame rates any hiccups I have. That should give you an idea of how the Dell will run. The Asus will run better. If the Asus is within your budget, go for it. If you have time to wait before the game launches so myself and others can give you more info, do it.

@cheatingpirate glad to help. I lost track of computer specs for about 10 years so I understand wanting help.
