If you go to an island that is under the storm, there is a chance you can find a shockfruit washed ashore. this fruit heals the same value as a Merfruit. If you are to cook it, however, the electrolyte juices of the fruit activate and the item becomes a "Charged Shockfruit"

when the Charged shockfruit is consumed, a 5 second timer starts where it hits the stomach and releases a lethal shockwave, dealing 100 damage, killing the player instantly! However, the shockfruit does the inverse if a player is killed within that 5 second countdown. The shock acts as a deliberator, reviving the player 5 seconds after death with extremely low health.

This may be unbalanced in some ways. However the possibilities of a consumable item that utilizes risk/ reward to the degree of the player's life are many, and the counterplay is definitely a notable dynamic.

See your enemy munching on a charged shockfruit? Stop tying to kill them, the shockfruit will instead.

going to send an enemy ship to kingdom come? munch on a shockfruit to stay behind and secure the sink.

someone about to blow your ship , but they drop the keg to eat a shockfruit? pick that keg up and stall for time- they will die in a bit.

The point is to add depth and counterplay to the idea of "cheating death" beyond the traditional method of praying that Hitreg favors you.

5 seconds for a fruit to kill or revive you isn't much time for 'adding depth and counterplay'. Even then, I always tell players never give up, as anything can happen in a fight. Eating this just to send yourself to the ferry doesn't make sense in combat, and is unfair to those who successfully killed their opponent.

Why would anyone eat this then if it causes death?
because if death occurs before the timer goes off, it revives the player. Risk Vs reward

Player boards my ship and starts stealing my supplies and/or treasure item. I attack/defend, he's close to death and eats this thing. I kill him and he comes back to life, kills me, and takes off with whatever he wants? No thanks.

I explained exactly what the counter to your example was in the original post: stall for time, jump around the ship and eat food, watch him self-electrocute.

So he boards my ship just to die by his own hand is what you're saying. Or, if he eats and I kill him, he gets a free rez (and kills me). Again, what's the point?

Edit: Buying merchant supply crates gives enough risk vs. reward in this game, as it's no guarantee she gives you what you've purchased.
