I propose this: The jails in ships basically serve no purpose, much so that the one on the sloop was removed.
What if killing a player that boarded your ship allows a few seconds for you to "capture" the player by pressing x near him when he is dead on your ship thus sending him to your holding cell for a period of time longer than what they spend in the ship of the damned?
There can be an option for him to be sent back to the ship of the damned immediately if he pays a hefty fine or he can wait it out.
But it doesnt have to be a long time it could be maybe 15 seconds or so more than ship of the damned, that way players don't always board your ship as the first thing on their mind.
This can be right after he is killed on your ship and have a second or so while not allowing the player to press y to go to the ship of the damned, if the second passes he then can go to the ship of the damned with no consequence so you have to act quickly.
So its fair for the enemy and fair for you while removing the incentive to automatically board your ship.
For this the cell in the sloop would have to be brought back and the bed slightly moved.

"Yay we killed the boarder now we have 15 seconds to apply pressure and oh his boat is ages away because we were repelling his attack, and by the time we get in a position to attack him, he is back and ready to try board again"

An additional FUN mechanic that can be applied to capture enemy boarders is a great idea, I love it. Finally a use for the jails

It’s all a question of perspective I guess.

For your first exemple you could also say “thank god we got him now lets take this time to repair, fully reset, and let us be more careful for boarders next pass.” As well, if his boat is away it means he is most likely solo. So, if he has the upper hand all the time, it is a skill imbalance not a game imbalance.

Your second exemple is only going to last until you either finally kill him or you sink. In this case, it is also not a game imbalance but a skill imbalance and there is nothing you can do about it but get better at pvp.

Finally, some degree of imbalance is expected and will happen no matter how much we keep changing the game. There is only so much you can do if, for example, you are a noob solo and encounter an experienced galleon.

So I was just looking back at a point you made before. About the person being bored having to deal with everything going on and borders. I think maybe a way around that could be a feature where you could plank up your ladder gap, like a temporary gate. Your have to remove it (costing you planks) when you want to go island exploring. But it would mean that attackers would have to shoot off your barricade to bored out go for a deck shot.

I'd actually find that really cool and fun, having to decide if I wanted to use my plans for repair or a chance a quick barricade.

Well if the brig worked as you've suggest maybe instead of paying good to go too the ferry maybe have a way to break out by needing to sword dash the door a few times. The capture would hear the cleanin clinking bars and have to decide if to keep sailing it go deal with it.

Personally I accept the risk that once I'm off my ship what happens happens. That gives other players the advantage to rip my ship apart so borders don't do so lightly unless they're on a lager crew.

Rare have actually acknowledged on one of their official podcasts that it is the design of the game partly at fault that you need to board and kill and sometimes spawncamp players to secure the sink. Especially with the updated ferry times so solo sloopers are back so quick.
I would happily sink a player using naval alone and I understand being spawncamped doesn't feel great but with reduced blunderbombs and Cursed cannons boarding and killing is even more necessary now to secure sinks.

I feel like a potential solution would be to increase damage taken from cannonballs while both under deck and on top of deck. At the very least, naval damage should be deadly enough to ensure that not winning a broadside naval fight should be fatal, and boarding wouldn't be needed as much.

It's so satisfying to kill a crew with cannonballs, and you know they're basically going to sink with all the cannon pressure you gave them.

Also I dunno what that last tangent was about I very much enjoy the pve world events, I use the sovereigns all the time.

Think you might have your responses muddled up. But I'm not salty, if Rare found a way to make it work then sure I think it could be interesting. But I highly doubt you'd get the satisfaction from it before players start complaining about always being brigged.

This isn't to stop boarding, it's to provide an alternative gameplay element.

Capturing a boarder (like what could happen during actual fights) would result in them being "thrown in the brig" - with only a slight increase in respawn time.

I've noticed that this forum is notoriously against new ideas. I remember requesting that supply gathering should be easier and not require NONSTOP clicking (I just wanted a take all button)

Everyone was up in arms saying "NO WAY NEVER THATS UNBALANCED" and lo and behold now we have 1 click storage crates that everyone loves and says is the best thing ever!

This is a great idea. A slight SLIGHT punishment to enemy boarders, a fun role play element, a new mini game (capture the boarder before he can flee to the ferry), a small deterrent to early boarding attempts, AND finally a fun and unique use for the jails aboard the ships!

But this idea could be extended, for example, by increasing the amount of time he stays in prison. That is, the more often the player gets aboard your ship and dies, the longer he sits. Once for 15 seconds, second time for 30 seconds, third time for 45 seconds. This would solve the problem of players who disrespect others and drag out the pvp match. Such players try to board your ship while sending their ship in the other direction so that the match never ends. And if you try to catch up with their ship, they just run away. So I think that if we add such a tough system with increased cage penalties, we will get rid of the "dirty" players who are nasty to everyone.

I can't agree with those premises.

Going up a ladder shouldn't be punished or have any kind of "consequences" other than you being where said ladder was leading.

I get that getting border is annoying but you can always scuttle and at least Rare are kind enough to reset your beginning supplies after sinking. Other games like Dayz, rust, hell even Minecraft make you start from scratch.

And saying getting killed is "consequence" is really not making a point at all since you can get killed by sailing across the sea by a kraken, but did you do anything to merit that? no it's just a random encounter. So getting killed is part of the game and can happen anywhere at any time and if that had been an excuse or deterrent for making changes to the game then there would have never been nothing added because "you already get killed".

It might look to you like it's the first thing on their mind but truth is most players have already been watching and planning before making a boarding attempt and with the respawn time varying between bigger crews and solo players and brig time on top of that would just extinguish the excitement of the encounter.
