Tridents start with 30 charges.

A level 1 bubble consumes 1 charge, causes 30 damage to players, and has no AoE.

A level 2 bubble consumes 2 charges, causes 60 damage to players, and has a small AoE.

A level 3 bubble consumes 3 charges, causes 90 damage to players, and has a medium AoE.

Most players are quick to dismiss the trident as a weapon because you can't run or block while carrying it, nor can you one-shot a player at full health (even if you hit them with a fully charged bubble). Since you can't sell them either, many players disregard tridents and don't even bother to bring them on board.

However, I've run across several situations where a trident is surprisingly useful:

The trident is a powerful tool against PvE threats. There must be a large damage multiplier being applied, because you can take down high health enemies (such as skeleton captains and ashen lords) in very short order. My crew took out a megalodon in roughly 20 seconds from simply firing level 1 bubbles at it.

A level 3 bubble will <s>sink a rowboat in one hit</s> cause massive damage to a rowboat. Keep this in mind next time you see a downed crew trying to escape with their loot, or whenever you use a harpoon rowboat to drag loot into the reapers hideout.

Are you being chased? Fire some level 3 bubbles at your pursuers from the stern of your ship to provide cover for your crewmate to board (or shoot them from the water as you try to board yourself).

You and your crew are immune to the bubbles' splash damage, so try aiming at your feet if you can't hit an agile target that's nearby.

Have you discovered other uses for the trident?

I absolutely love them for PvE!

I think they fill great roles in PvP as well. It's great enough just as a blunderbomb shooter, except gravity isn't a factor and you can't hurt crewmates.

Being a trident player feels balanced as well, you're like the classic attack mage. Hard to approach, easy to kill unless you drop the trident. It gives me an excuse to call the weapon charge MP as well!

The most interesting use that I've seen for the trident is it's ability to corral (haha like coral) enemies. Other players tend to try to stay away from the areas where bubbles are hitting, so you can get a player to change course pretty easily... especially with the level 3 charge, at that point people will definitely not be going that direction!

Imagine firing a level 3 bubble straight down a dock with an enemy carrying a piece of loot down it. More than likely, they'll jump off the dock, easy pickings in the water!

It also seems that the sound of the bubbles isn't very apparent to some players. I once fired a level 3 at a side of a building, to a spot that an enemy had just ran past. They came running back toward that spot from behind the building, only to get smashed in the face by a level 3 bubble! A great hit and a great story.

I didn't think about having it docked though... Perhaps the rowboat takes all the extra damage the ship should've sustained, since ships don't actually get damaged... or could be glitched... More testing is afoot!

Sidenote: I really wish a shot from the trident would put out fires... or cool off a chest of rage.

After clearing the enemy crew, I found a trident on the top deck. I ran to the lower deck, fully charged the trident, and awaited the reappearance of the enemy crew. As soon as one came to the lower deck, I released the fully charged projectile. In the close quarters, there’s no dodging it. I immediately followed it up with a pistol shot and dispersed of the enemy again. I didn’t think I could find an alternative use for the trident, but close quarter combat worked quite well

Hmm... you may have a point. I'm basing that assertion on a single incident; I jokingly fired a shot at a crewmate who was standing on our docked rowboat, and it destroyed our rowboat. I assumed it was a full health rowboat (I had docked it less than 5 minutes earlier) but haven't tested it rigorously. I'll look into this.
