Arena vote to start & whaling

  • it takes forever sometimes to get into the arena que and i've also noticed once your in the que it just merges between servers sometimes for a good 10 minutes. please adjust the time it takes to load into the arena que and also add a vote to start. id also like to see whaling with different types of sea life that you can fish like sharks, dolphins, whales, hammerheads.

  • @zeroe1ite More sea life is definitely needed, and the more things we can hunt the better. Hunter's Call is stale, and the only good way to get rep is by gem hunting.

  • I do think there should be at least a minimum wait time in the tavern. If that time is met, the match starts regardless of crew sizes. I know this goes against Rare's reasons for changing the minimum required crew count to start Arena matches, but, when Arena first came out, I had no issue loading into a match on a galleon solo. It meant less time in the tavern and more time actually playing the new game mode. Crew mates would eventually join in, and I never had a problem joining a match that was in progress--it just meant I got into the action faster.

This is the reason I think sloop arena is more popular. Simply because it takes less time for matches to actually start.

yeah and if people leave then it starts anyways

  • Whaling is a disgusting practice and you should be ashamed for suggesting it be added to the game.

  • @blam320 Bit harsh don't you think? They're not even real whales. Video game =/= real life, just like how killing and stealing from other ships will not make me want to do the same things in real life.

I like both ideas; when my friends and I were waiting to play arena for the first time, we waited 15 minutes and then just left because we didn’t want to wait forever. I also like the idea of more sea life. It would make the game a lot more detailed.

  • They might not include whaling because it is generally looked down on. For the same reason pipe smoking is not going to be included in the game.

  • @coldsheep @Blam320 should we not ban shark hunting as well for it being an awful thing? Sharks are being hunted toward extinction. Be real its a video game, let us hunt whales.

  • @captain-coel you bring a valid point, but sharks are considered the villains of the sea so few people care as much.

  • @zeroe1ite I'd actually be really interested in whaling and dealing with more dangerous sea-life.

In real life it's a good thing that it stopped, but I'd be a bull-goose fool if I said I didn't want to know what it was like to be there.

Imagine you're cutting thorugh the waves in the tropics when wham your ship shudders and water starts coming in!

You and your mates grab rifles and peer over the side just in time to see a pair of hammerheads circling back to crash into your ship again.

Or indeed, imagine you're in a sloop with your friend fishing in the icy Northern waters for the better catches (and crueler weather) when something HUGE rocks the ship, snapping lines and heaving frosty water into the bilge.

Then you see a massive pale shape under the black waters and hear that call that fills you with fear and awe as the value of whale oil, fat, and meat starts going through your heads - now you're harpooned to this great beast as it tries to shake you off and dash your ship against glaciers and islands, and only your skills as a helmsman can see you to the end of that fight.

Man, talk about an adventure for the Hunter's Call!

  • We already have the Meg. That is enough of a "big fish" challenge.

I think we can be confident that whaling will not be added to the game as a matter of political correctness. (I am not using the term disparagingly).

For my part, I would like to see cetaceans added into the game, esp. dolphins that might play sometimes under the bow of your ship. Whales and dolphins could be added to the game without making them something you could kill. Just make them the same as Duke or the Mysterious Stranger or any of the other NPCs: totally immune to gunfire or swords; and not even reacting to any such assault.

To those that might argue "What is the point of the devs spending time adding wildlife, if you cannot kill or otherwise interact with it?": Well, you might say the same of the beautiful sunsets that we see in the game; or the amazing water effects!

  • @blam320 i think your trying to bring a moral debate about whales into a game where you go around murdering people for money and killing endangered species for sport. if thats the case you might as well shut sot down.

  • @surveyorpete tbh dude i could do the same to you that you just did to me and tell you why your idea sucks and mines better but i believe you can just make your own thred for your idea. trying to be nice about it but thats a bit much sir

Of course Microsoft and Rare make moral decisions about what "piratical" activities they will include in the game. Think of the common phrase that ends "...and pillage". Well, Sea of Thieves certaining includes pillaging; but it does not include the other activity in that phrase. It does not matter WHY Microsoft and Rare choose to leave it out. Perhaps they are being pragmatic and do not want their game banned in some markets, or X-rated. Perhaps they are making a decision of conscience on high moral grounds. Perhaps it is simply not the game they want to make.

When I said "I think we can be confident that whaling will not be added to the game", I am saying I do not expect Rare to add it. I believe MS and Rare will make that moral/pragmatic/asthetic choice - for reasons of their own - regardless of a few gamers such as yourself asking for it. Personally, I am okay with that.

  • Out of curiosity, I googled "whaling computer game" to see if there were any games out there that @ZeroE1ite might enjoy. The results were amusing.

    First, we learn that:

To 'whale' in a game or 'whaling' is a term for gamers or gambling addicts who spend a good huge amount of money on video games or casinos. Since a whale is huge and they pay hugely for gambling or gaming, you can see why this is a thing.

So, I guess we might see the Pirate Emporium as an attempt to catch whales. :-)

However, I did find three games about whaling:

The first was Moby δick†, seen in this YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY2QTdB1x7E At first, I was surprised to find this, until I realised YOU play the whale, destroying the little boats of whalers coming to get you.

† Ironically, even typing the name of the fictional great (white) whale is censored here. That gives an idea of where MS/Rare's fear of offending people/moral compass lies. The accurate technical term for the cause of Moby's whiteness was even banned!!!

Next, I found Nantucket which is a whaling strategy game, available on Steam. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uru31fcZrBY

Finally, I found this on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpooned This game is described as follows:

The player controls a Japanese whaling vessel.... Additional discoveries are then announced highlighting the hypocrisy of killing vast numbers of whales in the name of science, such as "Juvenine whales are greatly reduced in number. We must kill more pregnant female whales to determine the cause of this reduction".

Hazards that the player must avoid include icebergs, protestors and news helicopters.

The game does not have an ending, however after about fifteen minutes of play there are no more whales remaining and the player finds that they are sailing through the icebergs alone.

  • @surveyorpete well given the over hunting of sharks maybe we should them immune to damage to help them recover.

  • @captain-coel

Yes! Clearly the Shrouded Ghost is an endangered species. So few sightings of it are reported. It may even already be extinct.

  • @surveyorpete
You make a good point, actually.

If I weigh the worth of political correctness against a sense of maritime adventure...
I'd throw politics overboard and go for the great stories every time :)

Groups like P-(Strangely censored name of radical animal rights organization)-TA can cross their arms and reee like they did with Animal Crossing and then everyone can laugh them off like usual and the game will stand head-and-shoulders taller than other games of it's like :)

The things I think would make the game Boom

    • The Hunter's Call pursues the Leviathan (As an alternative to Whales) into the icy North through sleet and snow.
    • From beyond the Devil's Roar strange new pirates arrive bringing Junks and blow-guns from the far East.
    • The Grand Maritime Union invades from the West bringing bayonets and the Man-o'-War.
    • Captain Flameheart grants his "Gift" for his most loyal servants in the Reaper's Bones, and turns them into Skeleton Lords upon reaching Rank 6 (until they are killed, and are deemed unworthy of retaining his boon until they prove themselves again)
    • Wielding his baleful trident, the Father of Storms awakens in the South to challenge the Pirate Lord and Captain Flameheart for control over the Sea of Thieves, bringing with him sea monsters from the deep and uncovering sunken ruins rich with relics.

^And in all of that, players are incentivized to both work together and sink each other.

  • Hi everyone,

While I appreciate that you all have ideas for improving the game and what you would like to see added please remember that the purpose of responding to a thread is to help the OP expand on their idea and discuss it. If you have suggestions of your own please make a new thread so other users can discuss them.

    Thanks!

  • @surveyorpet dude i dunno what your problem is and why your so offended that i made an in game suggestion but im reporting and blocking you. you can do a search for that and see where it takes you

  • @marrl Thank you for intervening, i dont want any issues from anyone. just wanted to post an in game suggestion is all and i dont understand what everyones problem is
