I don't think Galleon arena is any less popular than Sloop arena tbh, the matchmaking is just garbage. Sloop arena can quickly cycle through games because it needs half the people playing. I can find mostly full lobbies in Galleon arena very consistenly, but all of them are waiting on 2 or 3 people because the game insists on keeping open crew ships together at all costs so no one can actually get a game.

Galleon arena as it is right now is fine, the problem is the matchmaking isn't efficient enough, and even if it IS the problem, battle royale is a no from me, chief.

The experience in a sloop is far different to a gally. That's hardly a viable solution.

You're a smart guy. Even you know that arena has so much more potential than duo slooper fighting each other or gally dentist waiting room simulator.

They should scrap gally mode if the player count is reliably low and replace it with something new.

Sloop mode is fine, but big ship battles with multiple crew is really fun and they are a darn sight rare in Adventure mode there days. Just sloops and brigantines mostly.

I would like to see more, certainly, but only if it's done properly. I'm also worried about more modes further splitting the playerbase. Honestly, just allow for brigantines and mixed ship battles in Arena, and I'd say that's about all that's really needed.

@daringclarky just about 70% of what you described is called "Adventure Mode". It's the mode directly left of the Arena game mode. I like the idea of replacing Arena forsure. But because what you described is essentially adventure mode with an arena twist I dont think they'll go for it. If someone wants to search for ships to sink with something to actually gain they will play adventure. If someone wants easy sinks and to practice a new weapon choice or cannon aim they will choose arena. Make arena too much like adventure mode and people might wake up to how much better adventure mode is for PvP.

Also some of us prefer boarding and enjoying the 1 on 1 battles without worrying too much about the ship, your idea will make it so we'll quickly run out of opponents.

Well then it's clear that Galleon mode is not very popular. So if anything you just proved my point. That is should go because of low player count and be replaced with something that would be more popular.. Doesn't need to be my mode, but just any mode that lets toy actually jump into the game on a gally.

Sloops are small and nimble.
I want a big ship with a big crew mode.

The matchmaking for galleons is truly truly truly horrible to say for the least.

If anything it'd be better if Rare improved the matchmaking for galleons so that it'll be more effiecent and load faster

@awyrlas I agree, I think the best way for Rare to proceed at this point is to release smaller & new maps.

Rare is ridiculously lazy for repurposing the adventure map and should be ashamed.

Attack and defense would be awesome with 3 attacking ships, 2 defending ships + players on a fortress.

Also would be down for just 2v2 team deathmatch style.

@DaringClarky While I agree Arena is not in the best place right now due to high cannon points and farming. I still do not believe this is the right way to improve it. I think Rare should just nerf cannons back to 25 points or decrease points gained from repeatedly firing at the same ship. However I don't think this would be Arena at its best.

Blazing sails is only about as many ships. Also with a small enough map, it could definitely work.

of course your right though, more people would probably be better, and its a shame the Xbox weighs it down.

Game can't handle more than 5-6 ships, nowhere close to battle royale.

Xbox players made the game what it was (popular f2p title with game pass), but they also made it a living relic of hardware limitations.

Sea of Thieves will never grow to be the game it was meant to be, because it was never meant to be anything more than a sandbox game with pretty water and ship physics. Hence the criticism at launch for lacking content, and the continued lacking of meaningful content to this day.

Sea of Thieves missed a huge opportunity for a Pirate based battle royal to tap into the market.. it would have been amazing, different and fun but instead they went with the current iteration of Arena.. oh well.

Yeah trying to play Galleon arena is a terrible experience even with closed crew.

A few days ago I finally got a crew together after 45 minutes with LFG and then it took another hour to find a full lobby. When we actually found a lobby it was TDM'ers who trolled us for another 45 minutes because we didn't want to requeue for God knows how long. After deciding to requeue because we weren't getting reinstanced with different folks, we got another half full lobby 15 minutes later. This was at 5 or 6 CST. This is peak American hours here. I spent 2 and a half hours in arena and only played 5 matches. More than a third of my time was spent waiting in a lobby and all of my games were bad.

With open crew, forget about finding a full lobby. I've gotten one completely full lobby in Galleon Arena as an open crew player. Ever. It doesn't matter how many times you requeue, every lobby is like this. Each one is half full and waiting for a game to start.

Arena is something I want to play every day, but it's just not fun to spend hours of my time waiting for games and being rewarded for my patience with empty lobbies and poor matchmaking.

A battle royale could probably done pretty easily without changing much about how the games systems already work. Player load outs could definitely stay the same, but mostly empty ships and islands full of increasingly powerful resources would be the way to go.

Small islands would have lots of basic loot: cannonballs, planks, low tier fruit like bananas and coconuts.

Medium islands would have medium tier loot showing up more often: Throwables, the less impactful curseballs, regular kegs, and mid tier fruit like pomegranates and mangoes.

Large islands would have storage crates of low tier loot and many small pockets of medium to high tier loot: the more impactful cursed cannonballs, wraith balls, cooked fish, mega kegs, and pineapples.

Messages in a bottle could give maps with the locations of hidden caches of storage crates filled with goodies and there might be a few publicly know caches sort of like the cargo drops in other BR's filled with really good loot.

I'd also restrict maps to one or two regions only rather than the whole map. It'd be way easier to draw players together that way

Why ask Sea of Thieves to devote resources and development time to conform to a dumb trend when you could let this other game arrive at the same level of polish you're looking for? You're going to be waiting either way.
