Idea Time #14: Hardmode, and the Bilge Rat's Challenge Flag

  • Many of the game's original challenges have been watered down along the way, to account for less experienced crews. This is all fine, in fact, it's a positive addition. The game should be playable by all.

However. Some more experienced players enjoy the added challenge. I suggest having a Bilge Rat Challenge Table on the dock of each outpost, which you vote on similar to an Emissary flag. You can have the Bilge Rat Flag active alongside an Emissary Flag, Voyage, Tall Tale, etc. Be a Bilge Rat, and live for excitement!

When you vote to hoist this Challenge Flag aboard your ship, the world's encounters become more difficult for your crew. There is no special turn-in location, no added reward multiplier, just more challenge in the world, along with a Ledger. This Ledger is progressed just by... playing the game. All loot you turn in, all events you complete, everything-- it all progresses your Bilge Rat Challenge Ledger, as long as you fly the flag.

This way, you can show off to the world how much you've played with a harder difficulty. Perhaps special Bilge Rat Ledger sails could be up for grabs.

Here are some examples of difficulty changes that would take effect if you ran the Bilge Rat Challenge Flag:

Skeleton enemies are stronger, more health, more damage. Sniper skeletons return. Gunpowder skeletons are more common

Kraken, Meg, and Skelly Ships would prioritise spawning on Bilge Rats over other ships.

Kraken could cover your stairs once again and require more tentacles killed to defeat. Tentacles are beefier and will wrap/slap more often. It will take less time to get sucked off the ship. It could gain a new ability, such as spraying poison ink.

Megalodons are faster, stronger, more unpredictable. It could gain the ability to bite hold of the ship and shake it and drag it around

Skeleton Ships will fire more accurately, and use slightly more Cursed Cannonballs, the occasional firebomb/blunderbomb, and rarely, Chainshot.

Ghost Ships will have double health, and fire Wraithballs more often. Occasionally fires Cursed Cannonballs

Scraping the ship will make medium holes rather than small.

Volcanoes and Island Cannons will be more accurate.

Tall Tale bosses will be more challenging.

PvP remains the same, only PvE is altered.

And more. The best part is, the flag is entirely optional, and the only rewards are just for the ledger. I believe this Flag would be a great way to spice up play sessions. Perhaps you'd need to be a legend to be able to raise it. I just really like this idea as it is optional for those who want more difficulty. You get nothing out of it but bragging rights, allowing for Experienced players to enjoy a more seasoned play session, and more laid back players can have their way, too.

What is eveeyone's thoughts? Would you like this in the game? Why or why not?

  • Love this

  • When 'hard mode' crew Will start some ecounter and the 'normal Mode' crew Will join what would happen? Vice versa what would happen if normal crew start ecounter and 'hard mode' ones would join?

  • @avecrux The effects are applied only to the hardmode crew.

Ex. Skeletons deal normal damage and have normal health to normal crews.

Ex. Skeleton ships only fire more ammo types at the hardmode one.

If you wanted to look at it technically, then the hardmode crew just does less damage and takes more.

  • @bobbcane Thanks for letting me know. I've always longed for more challenge, but was always upset with the constant nerfs. I understand why things are nerfed, and it's good. But players should be able to choose the harder difficulty.

and there is the flaw. if you offer anything there will inevitably be demands for said thing to be made easier to obtain.
'some of us have real lives/work/kids' etc.

this wouldnt necessarily have to be an issue, but given rares history and its dependence on uber-casual gamepass noobs, the writing is already on the wall. if you want something like this, it cant have a ledger, special sails, not even a title.

  • @tehstepford Hence the "Perhaps". The ledger isn't the issue, the rewards are. I thought ahead, hence the "Perhaps".

I personally don't need it to have rewards. But some may. And some may not.

  • @tehstepford this sucks, but it's true. I've never wished for SoT to be a hardcore game, but it has become too hand-holding recently. That's why I think an optional hardmode would be greatly appreciated by some players.

  • @bobbcane I'd take the optional hardmode in place for a few updates, seriously. If we didn't get updates for a month, but we got one update with the hardmode, i'd have no issues.

  • @klutchxking518 try and tell that to the majority of the playerbase... No free update for a month, and you have a horde of screaming monkeys claiming the game is now dead

  • @klutchxking518 What about a hard mode expedition to an ice region, on a separate smaller map? It would still be accessed via Adenture Mode, but send you to a new map, with 3 - 4 other ships. All of your ideas could be implemented, plus icebergs, snow, freezing capstans, new enemies and more.

The expedition would only be accessible to pirate legends and cost $$$ to activate. Once you begin, there's no wood to be found. Use the wood you've brought, sink, and expeditions over and you're kicked back out to the main map.

I love hard mode, but am just thinking a) it would be fun if this were beyond the current SoT experience and b) if this were a reward for PLs and a new fun way to spend in-game cash.

    Thoughts?

  • @prescafatty I'd love that, but I think the features deserve to be separate. a frosty region could be on it's own area, and the hardmode should be a general option before leaving the outpost.

  • @bobbcane lol. Yeah, some are weird. I can deal with a content drought. I've got more than enough stuff to do, new stuff isn't always needed, but I feel ya.
