You can easily solo it, but if you want it even easier, get a crew, preferably a brigantine since it is very easy to bucket water. The ghost ships only take 3 cannonballs to sink, so it shouldn't be too difficult to kill, even as a solo.

After you have killed the normal ghost ships and the armada spawns, focus the boss in the middle first. It will take a bit more than 3 cannonballs to kill, but if you kill the boss the rest of the ships will despawn.
