COMPETITION OF COURAGE
-
@aaronblueeyes this will be all times unfair special if we play open crew and you will have other crews playing on closed one and several ones on discord or Xbox aplication aliances.
-
This event is time-limited grind with too much pvp rng. The most unlikely event for players to complete so far. The carrot so high is really good at discouraging players from even bothering. I am trying to find motivation to try but... it's basically failure right from the start so my brain is telling me to not play SoT - and that includes adventure as well. This is such buzzkill...

@galactic-geek If you read my original post I said 4 of my wins was with an open crew of randoms… If you know what you are doing you can command an open crew to victory and that is exactly what I did...
The other times was with my crew.. all of them I met on the seas and I've made good friends with them so we have an advantage when fighting other crews...
Just because you don't have anyone to play with doesn't mean they should make it easier …. Rare literally encourage everyone to make friends on this game they even have an emote for it.... Arena is a crew based game mode... you have made the choice not to form a crew so who is to blame here? Most open crews in my experience don't listen, quit, do their own thing, or simply don't understand. Just today, I had an open crew where 1 guy wasn't listening to anything I suggested, another who kept leaving the ship (and not to get the chest or attack others), and one that was good but that couldn't hear me, or I him - we figure this out after the match.
Barking orders at pirates that don't want to hear it is a good way to get them to throw the match just to spite you. I see it in virtually every online game I play - even though you try to help them succeed, many don't believe they need nor do they want to hear it.

@rikology My guess is that you have a regular crew. I do not, so yes - that puts me at a significant disadvantage. Is that my fault though? Not necessarily...
So you feel entitled to the figurehead...why? Not everything needs to be given to casual players. The figurehead is to promote arena, clearly arena isn't for you, so maybe go play adventure and forget about the figurehead?
I never said I felt entitled to it; I'm merely stating that circumstances can make it harder to get for many like myself. Clearly, those circumstances don't apply to you or Rikology.
Still, I'm not a casual pirate - far from it, in fact. I also know what the event is promoting - it's the whole reason I'm trying it out; I want to see if more pirates are playing Arena, if matchmaking times are better, and if the new changes make it better. While all signs point to yes, it's sad to see so many bugs plaguing the Arena such as with the hit registration, and, well, just read about this experience...
-
@galactic-geek Regarding that game breaking bug, it happened to me too, twice, after mermaiding in Arena. It is absurd.
-
@jctc758 Getting better has nothing to do with finding a good crew - I'm already good enough; I just don't have anyone who's willing to help me get there. Kind of hard to do it by yourself, you know...
-
I never said I felt entitled to it; I'm merely stating that circumstances can make it harder to get for many like myself. Clearly, those circumstances don't apply to you or Rikology.
@galactic-geek These circumstances are something that we all have control over... Every single member of my crew I met during an open crew session and became good friends with them...
If you had tried to become level 50 in arena before this competition you would of realised that not having a crew is a major disadvantage. Arena isn't a solo game mode...
-
@rikology It isn't a solo game mode?! Say wha!? 😱
Seriously, dude? Did you really just state the obvious?
OMG. SMH. 🙄
On a more serious note, I do have friends to sail with, but most don't care for Arena, or are already sailing with other friends, or have already completed it like you so they have no incentive to join me, or they're simply not online when I am (and vice-versa).
As for picking up randoms in open crews, I've been doing that, and I run into the same problems. Sadly getting a full crew of good randoms takes time, and time is running out.
Here's an idea - instead of sitting there trying to verbally 1-up me all of the time, how about you set me up with you and some of your crew to help me out - that way, you can show me just how good you really are. I'll even be willing to unblock you to see it for myself. It's a win-win because we'll both be getting what we want. Quid-pro-quo. You help me and I help you (prove yourself to me). I complete the event and your ego gets sated.
What do you say? Are you willing to back up all of your boastful claims? Or are you going to 🐔 out like you say I did?
-
@galactic-geek dude, if you ever see me on, send a message, I'll play arena with you. I recently moved to pc, but sloop arena is a home when you have 2 people working together.
-
@captain-coel I got a good friend to help in duo sloop and just barely won our 1st match through sheer luck that involved hijacking both the chest and the rowboat from the opposing ship while fending off a boarding and avoiding getting sunk and shelling the other ship. What a doozy! Then we recruited a random that we liked, as well as another friend who's kind of new. We got our 2nd win together too. We're getting back on together tonight at 10 p.m. eastern - keep your schedule open, and I'll invite you if someone drops out or becomes a no-show. Are you console or PC?
-
Something that deserves to be mentioned: here in the EU, we all speak different languages. Not everyone is proficient in English, so Open Crews are useless for most of us since we cannot communicate properly (and no, the pre-made messages do not get the job done). I was lucky to find two fellow Italian players that I really get along with, and they stuck with me. Even then, it's difficult to get everyone to agree on playing Arena. Unless you're an active member of your local community (in which case you probably already have a crew of your own) you're not going to find many players willing to help you.
-
@galactic-geek recently switched to pc. still getting the hang of the kb/m but my controller is plugged into the pc. Send me a message pm xbox live.

Feel the same way, have 3 wins at this point and spent days playing. The ask is too high for the average player to complete this event, only people who don’t have to work can finish this event milestone.

Lol. I went 17 wins in a row on sloops 2 nights ago. If you cant win, it's not anyone else's fault.

The "Competition of Courage" offers three rewards: one ridiculously easy (the boots), one that takes a moderate level of dedication and skill (the cutlass), and one which is hard (the figurehead), taking dedication, skill and some luck.
Why is that people expect that the "average player" should be able to achieve every commendation, kill every type of megalodon, or achieve every time-limited goal in the time available? Why cannot some things be hard? Why can't those who have better skills be rewarded with something that is a bit unique? Why does every child deserve a ribbon?
I do work. I have a full-time job; and I am far from being a very good PvPer. However, I am well on my way to 20 wins, and hope to get there by the end of the competition. But if and when I earn the figurehead, I want to feel I earned something a bit special. Something worth winning. Something not everyone else has! For me, the trick has been getting into a couple of good crews, with good communication: One consisting of mates I regularly sail with; another being a LFG crew that worked very well together.
An "average player" — if this means one of average skill — can achieve this target if they dedicate themselves to the task, and get into a crew that works well together. However, if by "average player" you mean a "casual player" — or perhaps once who spends much of their gaming time playing Red Dead Redemption or Tron: Evolution, or Star Wars: Battelefront, or any number of other games — then perhaps, @aaronBLUEeyes, you do not deserve to win a reward that is aimed at more dedicated Sea of Thieves players.
-
@surveyorpete stalk players much!? I’ve been playing since day 1 — and consider myself a dedicated Sea of Thieves player. Including participating in the beta and insider program.
I have a career, like many others, and never asked for things to be “easy” but a time-limited event in game shouldn’t require players to literally drop all of their life’s responsibilities just to accomplish it either.
To demonstrate victory in the Arena is a worthy endeavor for a limited-time event, to do so several times is also acceptable, but to achieve 20 wins is not. Achieving significant milestones like that should be part of a permanent grade-based commendation strategy for the Seadogs not a short-term event.
Lastly, gamers play games... and not just a singular game. I enjoy playing other IPs besides Sea of Thieves, that doesn’t devalue my ‘dedication’ towards Sea of Thieves.
-
Since my earlier post, just 3 hours ago, I have achieved another three wins towards my 20. These were with Random or LFG crews. One was pure luck. There was two of us on a galleon, with just one other galleon with a crew of three. But they seemed to have no idea what they were doing. They ignored the chest completely, and we were able to win just using superior gunnery. They sank twice!
It's not that hard!
-
@aaronblueeyes I think its perfectly fair that its not easy and only the worthy can get it, if you or anyone want it they need to "get gud" now seriously only the worthy deserve it.
If you or anyone wants help to get wins i can help out, my crew needs more wins so i can help anyone who needs. -
@galactic-geek Im afraid that it is a case of "get gud" and im not talking about being a sweaty 360 no scope player, you can be an average player and win like crazy if you team up right and communicate.
If you need help i can help you to win when im not playing with my crew. -

But you haven't played much arena.... I can see your achievements and it is obvious you have never played much arena .... this is your own fault... You cant expect to not play this game mode and then when rare do a competition you come and complain it is too hard...get a grip bro and admit this competition isn't for players like you

Bro you simply aren't good enough if you think it is that hard... sorry but these are just the facts...stop blaming it on having to work that has nothing to do with it... I could get 5 wins a night within 2 hours easily after working a full day at work...
-
@panquea9743 I cant say Im a cool arena guy, but bacicly this event requires you to do 1 win per day, quite fine. Even now its 2 wins per day, quite possible, not all people there are pros, you still have a chance, just find a good mate and you will do this

I somewhat agree with this sentiment. I played quite a few matches with @Captain-Coel last night, and he taught me a few things, some of which I was disappointed to discover. In a nutshell, it is asking a lot, but it's not as bad as I once thought it was - sadly, not necessarily for the reasons you might think.

This is another point I'd like to hit on - gamers don't often just play 1 game; for example, my top 5 are Sea of Thieves, Rocket League, PUBG, Minecraft, and World of Tanks - of those 5, at least 3 require dedicated time commitments to achieve seasonal, pass, event, or otherwise time-limited goals. It can be hard for someone you see as an "average" gamer who is actually anything but, make all, or even most of those time commitments work, especially if they have other more important priorities in their lives.

...and this is kind of what I learned with @Captain-Coel - it's easier than I thought not because of skilled pirates at all - it's easier for 2 other reasons; 1 is simply luck of the draw. Getting into a lobby with other crews that are giving away free wins or who just don't care, for example. Sadly, we can't rely on luck.

If you or anyone wants help to get wins i can help out, my crew needs more wins so i can help anyone who needs.I appreciate the offer, and I'll definitely keep you on as a retainer in case somebody drops out, but I think I have enough pirates crewed up with me right now. Who knew simply asking for help could be so profitable?
Still, I never liked the get gud mentality - while it's not wrong per sé, there are a few things wrong with it:
- It's grammatically incorrect.
- It makes whoever says it look, well, not smart.
- It also makes them look very rude and condescending.
- It gives absolutely no help or details whatsoever in exactly how to get gud.
Speaking of which, it's not up to you to determine who is or isn't worthy. The only one who can determine someone's worth is themselves.

This event is for EVERYONE. If it wasn't, it'd be stuck behind some sort of paywall, or skill-based leveling system. That said, I do agree with your latter statement about the event's value.
@kustho said in COMPETITION OF COURAGE:
Step 1: get a full crew
Step 2: click escape after game starts, look what crew is not made of 4 player.
Step 3: set sail and bomb the hell outa that crew, make sure to hit em above deck so they dont sink, get your cannonballs from their ship and not yours.repeat.
...ands this sums up the 2nd point; it's not about skill at all. It's about luck, and also...
Manipulation!
@Captain-Coel taught me that when you enter the lobby, you can use the other crews menu option to see who has a full crew and who doesn't. This, in turn, gives you an inherent advantage in knowing who's going to be more vulnerable to attack. This is something that needs to be removed, IMO, as it's an exploitation of the system that shouldn't even exist, because it gives immediate advantages to some over others BEFORE the match even begins. Even worse, not everybody (like myself) even knows about this, so again, it's not about balanced gameplay or skill. It's about those who are ruthless enough to game the system. This inherently breaks Arena.
With all of that said, I have already received the boots of courage, as well as the cutlass of courage, and have 5/20 wins.
Help, a little bit of skill, and a whole heaping of cheap manipulation of the system apparently go a long way!
😅😏🤨😐😑 -
@galactic-geek hahahaha that is the definition "Get Gud" is an impression of sweaty 360 no scope mlg doritos players, its simply way of making a joke out of this attitude and yes when someone says "get gud" he is not trying to give you a contructive feedback he is being cynical.
And duh its being written incorrect hahaha. Those who are worthy are those who meets the requirements of the task, if you or anyone didnt completed the taks then you are not worthy its simple.
And no its not for everyone because not every player is competitive in his spirit or maybe even like the arena so i insist on my word.
-
I'd played 12 tonight and won 11... the only time we lost is because we decided to go after a ship that was farming cannonball shots the previous round... Non of the other wins were from farming shots... Non of these wins were due to 'luck' we were simply the better players...
-
@aaronblueeyes it's not luck. I've won ~50 matches since this competition started. People playing arena has really helped me work towards my 240. I only need 65 more now. I've won in my normal crew of 2 or 4. I've won a few in open crew, or with crews I've just met. I've even won twice, solo. I've spawn camped people till they rage quit, dumpstered boats with cannons, stolen chests, or dug up chests. When I play arena it is about accumulating silver to win.

Do yourself a favor and stop bragging. It helps nobody - least of all yourself. Feel free to be proud of your accomplishments, but the world doesn't need to know about it - share it with only those with whom you care to know about it instead, like those closest to you.
Also, you haven't answered my question from earlier.
