Few hours in and I've became to know that the only reason you go to missions and exploration is to get gold so you can buy skins...

There's no progression system at all, and although I understand that maybe the developers wanted to make the game fair for newcomers, in my point of view, they are killing the game longevity.

I'm not here to criticize only... I have some few ideas.

Progression systems can be implemented as follows:

Character Levels 1 to 50 (so you can gain a bit more life or be faster in some activity)

Skills (so you can have 1 or 2 special skills to make your pirate unique. One can be unlocked at level 25 other at level 50)

Level based areas (so you can get better rewards if you have a higher level or if you try to beat a higher level area at a lower level)

Server based on Skill levels 1 to 25, 25 to 50 (so 50 level characters won't dominate low level players and if they get invited to lower level servers they get nerfed down and get less gold than the other server)

Gun progression (so you can upgrade/buy better weapons)

Ship progression (so you can upgrade to be faster or more resistant to cannon attacks)

Clothing progression instead of just skins (so it can give you a bit more life or breath under water or swim quicker)

On PVP arenas everything gets nerfed to the same level. (basically the current no progression system)

Those kinda changes can take a while to do but they will guarantee the lifespan of the game itself.

I'm an old-timer and as a experienced gamer, I like to play simple games, like truck, hunt or fishing simulators that are basic simple games... But they all have a sense of progression (even if it's just a little one)...

It was very clear to me, in the very first half hour of playing Sea of Thieves, that if the only reason for me to have all this quests was to get a new skin, I wouldn't commit to playing that much.

I can be wrong, and if so, the game didn't made clear what is the progression system in it.

Hope you (developers) can read this constructive criticism as a good thing. I loved the game itself, loved the feeling of being at sea, I see so much potential... Moreover I want to play this game a long time... But I'm not sure if it will happen, if the main goal is to get new skins. (frankly I love already the way my character looks and I don't need new skins).

I understand where you're coming from. I will tell you why I disagree with your idea/s. There are not very many of this type of game. Most games are the same. Most games are just re-used ideas. For instance, look at all the crafting games now. Crafting games became a HUGE market and it seems like everything you play these days has crafting in it. Quite a few people have asked for crafting and home building things to be added to SoT. Most of us don't want that. There are probably thousands of other games with that. End games? Same thing. There are millions of games that have an ending. We don't want that. Sure, there are pure sandbox games and SOT may not be as much of a "sandbox" as some other games, but that doesn't mean it's not one.

SoT is different as you play differently. For instance, I can't stand playing solo. I can't stand playing with randoms. I play all the time, when my clan mates are on. Sometimes we want to do a specific voyage and/or achieve a specific commendation. Most of the time, we want to fight. We never know what's going to happen and with all of us playing, it's so much fun. I love the fact that we can login and then WE decide what WE want to do. The game doesn't tell us. I know you understand that aspect of SoT. I hear you everything you're saying. I get it, but I respectfully disagree with wanting to add things that change the whole idea if this different game.

If you decide to play some more, find yourself a fun crew. Find a crew of people that like to play and like to have fun. Once you start playing with the same people, once you start learning their play styles and schedules and whatnot, you'll have so much more fun.

Let SoT be simple and clean and open. If it means anything to you, I have played since beta. I love SoT and I plan to play as long as I can.

I'm a humble man... But yes I can understand, but still it's a shallow game to me... and Yes, if you could build your own boat (or a different type) that would be awesome... but I wouldn't use this for making this argument.... building ships wouldn't be the point of being a pirate right?!

Pirates went to the sea risking their necks for GOLD, coz with gold, in life, you could upgrade your ships, weapons, buy crew members, or drink more hahahaha not to mention buy a diamond ring to your loved one...

and all I see here are skins......

Also in life you don't start with the same tools that "high level" people... And that's the point in every RPG, being like nature of life... You start kinda naked and you grind yourself up stronger, wiser, older. And sometimes you get beaten by stronger people... But the reward of leveling up is awesome!

But like I've said previously, I'm stepping out of my own discussion. I feel like my point was clear and well made... It's my feedback to the developers...

My buddies are offline and without them, no point in playing this.

Regarding all other comments, I thank you all for your input, but here is my opinion (for those who care)

Many will cry about veteran players being more geared up, but, firstly I gave an idea that could minimize that.... And second.... I'd say: hey that's life! Sometimes there's a bigger bully on the school that will kick your butt out if you don't be smarter.

Progression and objectives (other than skins) are basic in all aspects of life... Life is a grind, and the rewards are awesome... Even chess has a point... beating the other opponent.... In SOT there's no point in fighting at all, because there's no reward at all...

Furthermore I'd say that this is not a sandbox, if it is is a very lame one. Garry's mod is a sandbox, it gives you tools to make your own game... This game doesn't, it gives you skins and that's it.

Every opinion is welcome but even for those who argue against my point of view the fact is that the Devs know it, people are dropping out of the game and they will leave for sure once Skull and Bones (or other game that gives a better pirate roleplay) comes along.

I've wanted to like the game... It's brand new in my game library (it was a gift)... But, I see no point in playing it.

I have other ideas to make the game great. But there's no more point for me in continuing to defend my stand... The point was made, it's there, and if the Devs are smart they can (like the name of the thread) see it as a feedback.

Thank you all for all input, I'm resting my case. Thanks

Coming back to the argument of progression... Progression doesn't mean you have to get a gun, with upgrades and modifying it so you can kill people with 1 shot. Progression could mean, upgrade your weapons so you can unlock modification for its look, buy better looking weapons, put some diamonds, the more u use a weapon then the more improvements for its parts can change, you can buy a better looking one, or painted different... it's whatever!!! You can build progression on the look and it doesnt need to affect the damage you do. They could have build progression on the way players play their game, "killing x players you unlock all this progression of clothing", collect x amount of gold unlock this beautiful ship, BLA BLA BLA...

Exactly. There are several games that use this model and I think it really could have done wonders for SOT. Hopefully someday they'll focus on it. I mean they have already started... but repeating a story quest 4 times to unlock a sword is a pretty sad implementation of something like this.

@ultmateragnarok What end game content? You hit pirate legend and unlock a new hideout to pick up voyages that make you do the same things you have been doing the entire game? The cosmetics locked in there (which the clothing doesn't require you to be a PL to buy)? The whole game is either grind gold/doubloons for cosmetics or pvp which is fine don't get me wrong, but when that's the only thing to do then why play this game over other games that try to keep you playing every week/month/season?

When the game first came out I grinded to hit pirate legend with the promise of the game just starting there and the ability to work towards building a unique ship only to be met by more of the same grind for not even good looking cosmetics, we are a year into the game and still nothing new for PL's to do, I know people just starting out not even wanting to try to hit PL because there's no point.

If this game wants to be competitive with other games in the live service market it needs to try to get people to come back outside of doubloon cosmetics and rehash voyages. At this point I only hop on the game if friends are on to pvp, I'm sitting on over 2 million gold and over 2k doubloons with nothing worth spending them on.

If you're playing this game for the same reason you play other games (e.g., progression to an end), then you're playing for the wrong reasons in well, any game in fact - not just this 1. The whole point of games is to have fun and enjoy the experience. Winning or getting to the end is great, and certainly helps with that, but doing those ultimately isn't the point. As you said, that's the goal, but it's not necessarily the purpose. Whether you beat it, win, or don't do either - none of it matters unless you're having fun enjoying the experience.

The way I look at it, a game that ends is finite - I beat it, win, and move on. A game that doesn't, however, can become as infinite as I choose - always able to come back whenever I want. Whether it's to see what's new or for nostalgia, at least I know that there will be a good reason to come back.

Don't worry about whether a game is competitive in the market - let the developers worry about that. You just have to worry about whether the game is enjoyable enough for you to keep playing and supporting it. For me, at least, Sea of Thieves absolutely is.

Galactic Geek

Reply to Main game goal (please developers read this) on Tue, 03 Dec 2019 16:50:06 GMT

I can see both sides of the discussion here and feel like I agree with both. We want a game where you can always enter and no one will be better than you for having upgrades based on the time play. But at the same time we could have upgraded cosmetics based on the time play that affects nothing but our look.

They created a game so based in "we dont want advantatges" that they literally created a sea with lands with people farmign gold for skins that are not in game by 2 year of the Game life.

I like the game and I DO still play a lot, but the reality is that the game doesnt bring much to do to the player. Of course you can pick your ship and sail with friends, but its always the same, you go against people or you just farm. There's nothing like a "Sandbox" in this game... For those claiming this is a sandbox its not, you just cant do WHATEVER you want, you CANT interact with everything, and build everything you want. You have to play the way you want but you CANT CHANGE the map itself and build anything around. You are attached to the gameplay as it is, a pirate game, so its not a sandbox. Its an Online Openworld based on Piracy, not a sandbox. When you be able to change the world by creating estructures and buildings or interacting with the map to make its look different, then we will be talking about sandbox.

Devolopers havent thought about that or what? They just give us re-skins on year 2. Really? I coudl expect re-skins if this game had 800 original different skins of each thing not 10... Seriously.

As I said I love the Lore of the game, and the world they created, but the decisions they are taking and the path this game is taking to "improve" is making some players tired... I will continue playing the game and enjoying it, but as I said this game could have done better than that. I hope they can continue expanding this game and making it really Amazing for all of us to enjoy it.

Yehaaaa!!!
Spread the curse in the seas!!

As you said, the developers wanted to make the game fair for all. I think most of your ideas won't will happen. I like the skill ideas, but don't think this will fit this game.

We already have a level based area, but this place need more improvement...

What makes this game so fun is that what is taken into consideration is the player's skill. I just didn't understand why you want to progression in one place to remove it to the PvP arenas. Don't you think it would be unfair to newbies anyway?

I think the game for you is not Sea of Thieves, but Atlas.

Hi Johnny !
I read you post and...
Yes, you're right ! there is no "way of progression" In sea of thieves.
No skills or advantage for high level players.
A legendary Pirate, over lvl 50 have exactly the same abilities than a lvl 1 newcomer !
BUT :
As long as you get lvl in the different factions you can get better rewards and tricky travels.
The aim of the game is to create your own journey.
Sometimes it's flat and cool, sometimes it's a foolish adventure !
Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose all.
Sometimes you meet friendly people, sometimes you meet despicable thieves !

But each time you go, you get more accurate in sailing, know the world better, and enjoy the tales...

There is no need to up your stats, just improve your skill !

That's the adventure !

Open world game, where one decides for themselves what they want to achieve. Whether that is to do the tales, voyages, commendations, sneak around, fish, hunt and any thing else you want.

I for one have gained max level, soloed forts, skeleton fleets, Athena voyages and such for the challenge of doing it. I like to meet people and just go with the flow whether that is fight or grog. The game is about as much or as little as you want it to be.

Session based game, meaning one can pick up the game at any point and not be behind in comparison to others. Each and every pirate is the same, yet it will not feel that way when you meet them. Progression is the mastery of the game, your own abilities and capabilities. The game already gave you everything you need yet mastery of these tools is something that you need to learn. There is no need for a game to give better items, additional skills and all that which would require one to grind up to a level to play along. In a multiplayer game these things you call progression are just checkboxes that people will demand you to have hit in order to be part of a crew and that is not the idea behind the game, where sailing together and player interaction is the main point.

Improve ones own abilities and set your own goals, interaction, play with others and enjoyment are the main goal. Why do you need pixels or a number going up to keep you playing? Play the game if you enjoy it and pick it up as much as you like. Being a free roaming pirate means that you have all the opportunities and it is you to decide how to fill in that freedom.

I didn't read replies either, BUT...

There is no "end goal" or "end game". This is a sandbox game. You create your own adventures and do so, as many times as you want. Why give us an end? I want to play and play and play. I don't want to finish.
