Bring back Server Merges instead of shutting down low population servers.

  • Earlier today I was doing an Athena Voyage. I was ONE map away from completing the first chapter, when i got the notification that the server was shutting down in 10 minutes, I spent 3 hours up to this point doing this voyage and after that it was all for nothing... I am not happy about this and I'm sure if it happened to others they would not be either.

In the future, can we please have a different way of shutting down the servers. With only a 10 minute warning almost any voyage anyone was doing at the time would be a waste but with the influx of PLs recently, id imagine this will soon become more of an issue.

And what ever happened to server merges?

EDIT: I have no idea if this would even be possible, but if there was a server shutting down outside of a maintinance window, is there anyway we could have our current voyage save, for example after the server shuts down i can get an option to continue my voyage on another server, where i will leave off right where i was at before the server shutting down. Even if i need to restock my boat or start off at a random outpost again thats still better than losing all that time. These are just ideas though...

  • @prodigy-tdg that seems odd. I've never encountered that message when an update was not underway.

You may have been on a dysfunctional server requiring attention...I've never been shut down, even when I have the map to myself

  • @violentandroid strange isnt it? i have seen it before but not when it really mattered much. i wrote a ticket to support and was told there was nothing they could do about it unless the loot was turned into the designated NPC. Im only guessing the server was shut down because it was empty but it very well could have needed maintenance, either way 10 minute warning was not enough time what so ever...

  • @prodigy-tdg that is horrible. Can u reply further for an explanation? Because if low population is shutting down servers, starting an athenas is even riskier

  • @violentandroid and @PRODIGY-TDG

Unfortunately it isn't all that odd.
We've had a 10 minute server shutdown notice when there wasn't any scheduled update or maintenance due. This has happened to our crew twice.
Like I said then, if they can spit-out that notice then they can do a server merge.

My entire crew has also simply been kicked from the game when reaching the outpost with sails up (that close) for three Athena's in a row.

    Not cool. :/

  • @violentandroid I can reply, ill ask and see if they respond. Even if it was for server maintenance that's even scarier because theres no possible way to know ahead of time. At least in a low populated server you can be like "we haven't seen anyone in a while we shouldn't do it now." I dont know man, i love this game and this is the first time ive been upset with the devs. I work a lot of hours through the week and this was me waking up early to try to knock an Athena out (just hit PL saturday), and yeah i wasn't happy with the time wasted.

  • @admiral-rrrsole There was a time this weekend where i turned in an Athena chest only to be kicked literally seconds later. I know that wasnt Rares fault and it was on Xbox's side but still, i missed out on the rest of the loot because I couldnt even join back but just glad i got the Athenas in or this post would have been about my second lost Legendary chest.

  • @prodigy-tdg Dang. That was close. Buy a lottery ticket. lol

I think it was yesterday when the Xbox app decided to have a hissy-fit.
It kicked each of my crew, one at a time.
When I tried to invite them back the app didn't recognize them as being my friends.
I was eventually kicked too so I tried again to invite them to party chat but no dice. :/
I rebooted my PC but I had to log-in to the app 6 times and it still wouldn't work.
Windows 10 notified me with each log-in that I was indeed logged in as Admiral RRRSole but the Xbox app kept asking me to do so.

Luckily I had only just proposed an Athena's between losing the first and second crew members. We hadn't started at the time. Just lost the $250 or whatever it cost.

  • Yeah, server mergers haven't gone away as far as I know, so @PersonalC0ffee is right on that point. That said, it's probably a good idea to remember to turn loot in often, just in case something like this (or some greedy pirate encounters, for example) occurs, rather than waiting to the very end that may never actually come.

  • @admiral-rrrsole 😱😢😭😭😭😭😡🤬

  • What if they had to shut it down because it was broken and wouldn't server merge 🤔?

  • Hey @prodigy-tdg sorry to hear that this happened to you. @PersonalC0ffee and @Galactic-Geek are correct. A server will not voluntarily shut down, outside of our maitenance window of course, and if players are on a server that is forced to shut down it will attempt to migrate you to a new server, if possible. Also, low server occupancy isn't one of the reasons why a server would forcibly shut down.

Sounds like you had a bout of bad luck :( Like @Galactic-Geek said, I turn in my loot often in case a fluke like this happens or I run into another greedy blood-thirsty crew.

  • I have never got a server shutdown warning. Is it a PC thing?

  • Cant see your post. Looks like it was deleted?

  • @prodigy-tag you said earlier today. What time? There was a maintenance window for the patch. Is it possible that was it?
I doubt it was for low population, as I still see server mergers regularly

  • @prodigy-tdg I wasn't aware that they shut down servers outside of Maintenance. I had only encounter this once and assumed the server needed a quick restart. I still encounter empty and low populated servers and it usually takes an hour for them to fill up but at least they don't stay dead. If mergers are still a thing i would like them to add some indicator of this occuring. Not like the message we use to receive. it could be something subtle like a small blip on the corner of the screen or a ambient sound. Infact they should have some way of quickly identifying how many ships are on a server.

  • @lawnpaul I made this post on Tuesday. There wasnt a patch that day

We do the same, we rushed to turn in what we still had on our ship a few skulls and chests. But the real loss was the athena chest that we were working towards the whole time. There was no maintenance going on at the time, I was only assuming it was because of low pop and I was wrong about that. I couldn't tell you why it shut down but it did after it gave us the warning for a shut down. I really love this game and have been pretty understanding about everything but this left a sour taste in my mouth. I understand theres nothing that can be done reimbursement wise (even though I tried anyways lol) but I just hope this doesnt become more of a problem in the future for me or anyone else. That's why I posted about it here.

My wife and I are on xbox. It has happened to me once before but wasnt such an issue then.

Yeah we do turn in our loot as much as possible. However the big issue is all the time we spent leaving up to the athena chest only for the voyage to be cut short just before we could get the chest.

  • @personalc0ffee said in Bring back Server Merges instead of shutting down low population servers.:

This happens when there is a failure on the server and it needs to shut down for emergency mode.

    Server merges are still happening.

So I guess I was just really unlucky then huh? :(

  • Maybe they could increase the countdown to 15 or 20 minutes. That would be ample time to stop what you’re doing and get to an outpost.

  • @prodigy-tdg I used to get the merging "riddle" all the time. Haven't seen one happen in awhile now.

What does the riddle say? I got one about the world changing and right after that the Captain skulls I was supposed to pick from the shores disappeared and after a few minute the server crashed.
It happened 22hour ago, according to the screenshot I took.

Edit: Ok, that's the riddle about merging servers, never happened before and didn't know it even existed.
Guess I've been lucky. Well, up until now, I guess.

yeah same. That's why I wasn't sure if they did away with it or not. A server merge would have been ideal in this situation.

That would have been a server merge yeah. So it is still around. i just havent seen it in a long time. Sucks you had to deal with losing the skull and on top of that a server crash.

  • @eidelyn I has not actually read what it said. It was always too quick for me to read.

  • @prodigy-tdg I remember a month or two ago I was a Crooked Masts and I was doing a Gold Horderd digging up 3 of the 4 chest that I had. All of a sudden the servers merged and all my chest that I had already dug up respawed again at that island and in walked away with double the amount of chest. $$$
