How a real pirate ship should look like!

  • PLS READ BEFORE POSTING - I try to compare ship details, not the genre of games or any other aspects!

I know it's another genre of game, but look at this amazing attention to details, and it's a multi-platform game, so there shouldn't be a problems with optimisation

And Rare gave us floating log with even not a half of sails and 20 copypasted "customisations" after 5 years of "hard work", and a lot of players defending them...

    Wow!

  • That looks like Soul Calibur with ships.

  • It's black flag, just minus the parts where you actually control a character insead of being a sentient ship.

  • @symbioto compared to that SoT is a simulator
In this video ships turn in every direction in a speed such a big ship can't do, never ever...and the water doesn't look at all like in SoT
Maybe it's a good game, but it looks more like an arcade shooter with ships...

  • With the exception of PUBG and Armored Warfare the copy cats that come out usually SUCK in comparison to the original Intellectual Property. Sure this Skull and Bones might have a more in depth Ship to Ship combat system but it will lack in just about every other category out there. I watched the E3 stuff and read all the insider stuff on Reddit and It sounds to me like not only will this be a boring 1 dimensional game but it will get pushed back at least one more time. UBI is infamous for pushing back dates to add stuff at the last minute.

  • Let's be real, Ubisoft will ruin skull and bones. SoT will only get better with time. Will defo try out skull and bones though ;)

Could you reed before posting sometime guys, I don't compare genre of this games - I talk about fascinating details of the ship - Sails, ropes, decorations etc.

  • I think it'll be a fine game in its own genre, but the only similarity I see with SoT is the pirate setting.

I expect S&B will have the MOBA multiplayer functionality of For Honour meshed with the ship combat from Black Flag. I'm sure that will appeal to some folks, doesn't really float my boat though.

If all someone cares about is that it has PVP and is vaguely piratey though then maybe it's an SoT killer for them.

  • ubisoft games r the most boring games on the planet for me ,
u can build groups with 4 players(ships) and just one person per ship thats division on seas;).n i completly dont get it why u cant sail together on one ship;) ,its pure pve with checkpoints and no islands to discover....

  • @weedstar-deluxe

No, it's not pure PvP it's PvPvE also, free open world with customisations, it was confirmed yesterday.

And SoT as boring as hell with 3 types of missions, so what to say about Ubisoft boring games...

But post is about details of the ships which is rare was lazy to make.

  • @symbioto ye sorry meant pve

  • @ant-heuser-kush

Not the genres, but details of ships... pfff, blind ppl

If you don't think SOT is a beautiful game then I think you maybe the one in need of glasses. Realism isn't everything.

Yeah, let's compare the cars in Forza Horizon 7 to the cars in GTA 5.

I don't need some realistic stuff, it can be stylised, but more original and fun, now we have just bunch of primitive and same customisations with just different colours and ships are too much simplified. Not talking about fire cannon effects cut at half since videos of 2015

  • @symbioto
Like those are two completely different kind of games, those have completely opposite Art styles.

    • Skull and Bones took the best Realistic look and Sea of Thieves took the best Cartoon look. Cartoon style has never been full of details, and it's not the goal.
    • With this major opposition, you have Skull and Bones that choose an Arcade gameplay, and Sea of Thieves who choose a Realistic Gameplay.

So yeah, completely different kind of games, means Completely. Those are opposites :)

  • @symbioto I don't really like the over abundance of "Detail" Skull and bones has. I'm actually hoping I can make it a simpler ship.

To each his/her own but I like a more simplistic approach to ships. Less complicated moving parts. I think Creed 4 deed it well, it was detailed but not too much.

Real pirates didnt overly decorate ships. It had no practical use.

  • @hynieth said in How a real pirate ship should look like!:

@symbioto I like a more simplistic approach to ships.

Yep, but in SoT we don't even have Jib sails and anchor is invisible, no cabin customisation and custom decorations is a joke and not worth anything
Way toooo much simplifed isn't it ?

  • @symbioto Most Galleons didnt have Jibs either, Brigs had them most of the time but I think they are kind of hard to impliment. I'd love to see them tho. But remember that Sea of Thieves has more of a simulation engine running behind all the tech.

If you'd be able to put extra sails on a ship it'd make the profile kind of hard to recognise from a distance, profiling is pretty important in this game. It's kind of like when Blizzard made overwatch characters and make their profiles distinct so you can at a glance see who you are fighting.

  • @symbioto

    Hey, deja vu!

Man, we haven't had a Skull and Bones thread on here since beta. Kinda makes me nostalgic.

But yeah, SnB is a good lookin' game. I prefer the stylized, more whimsical look of SoT though. Customizations, while I'm always hoping for more, have never bothered me too much.

Also, I suppose it's probably easier for SnB to throw in a lot more extraneous detail since, from what I can tell, it has no actual effect on the ship. SoT might be more simplified, but I think that's a necessity since you're actually using those objects to control the ship. SnB ships seem to control a little more arcadey, so there's no need to make which rope controls what part of the sails easy to understand.

Assassins Creed: Black Flag was a big hit with people, especially the ship combat, so I'm sure SnB is gonna be just what a lot of people are looking for. It's a little too PvP arena for my tastes, but I'm happy to see any pirate-themed game come to market. It's one of my favorite genres and one I don't think gets enough love from the entertainment industry.

  • @symbioto The ships look great and very detailed, no doubt.
Ubisoft makes good-looking games, but this gameplay video seems completely out of place in the SoT-forum.

  • I think Sea of Thieves IS NOT meant to be realistic. It's cartoon-ish. Supposed to be fun and goofy yet kick a**. You choose how to play the game. There's no campaign to follow. That is what makes this game great and different from others. Don't try to make Sea of Thieves something it isn't and don't try to fix something that's not broken.

  • Pfff, who talks about realism... Number of details and customisations we supposed to have in a normal realised game I tried to show to a blind and deaf crowd.

There is some studios working really hard and delivering much more content at release and it's normal.

Attention to a small nice details such as cool animations and small objects - in SoT they showed us some of this stuff to make us buy the game and at the release they cut half of content - graphics was downgraded, poorer effects, they removed flags, crabs, dolfins, some small animations like hand against blinding sun etc.

They don't even want to make a good price balance to make voyages interesting - you can sell exploding barrels for 130-170 gold and 2 type of chest less than that. Pig dying if starving and costs less than undying chicken...There is absolutely no interest in half of present mission loot which makes those voyages usless.

  • Isn’t it a great time to be a gamer? Just about any genre is represented in a variety of ways to suit your play style and aesthetic preferences. Does this make one better than another? Not really. Like music, art, food, and so on, they simply cater to different audiences. I enjoyed the gameplay and fun aesthetic of Team Fortress over Counterstrike. I prefer the style of Fortnight in comparison to PUBG. But I think it is a pretty harsh to say Rare is lazy just because they didn’t chose the same visual style as Ubisoft’s title. I personally like the artistry of SoT.

  • @ghostpaw said in How a real pirate ship should look like!:

But I think it is a pretty harsh to say Rare is lazy just because they didn’t chose the same visual style as Ubisoft’s title. I personally like the artistry of SoT.

2 ships, 10 recoloured items, minimum of anims of characters and of moving ship parts, 1 type of enemies, 3 type of quests, 5 years of work - they are not lazy compare to any other company?
What are volume of released content and attention to small details(not only model details) to do with visual style ?

  • @symbioto It is pretty easy to make a Super duper detailed ship when you can't freely walk around it. All crew members on that ship look static to their positions. I am pretty sure Rare could have given us super detailed over the top ships. If once the crew members boarded the ship they were stuck either A. in the crows nest. B. on cannons C. on the wheel.

I'll bet you an Athena's Fortune chest that you can't jump of a ship in Skull and bones and freely swim the ocean whenever you want and/or stealthily board an enemies ship. The mechanics are completely different... MUCH simpler.

  • @ecljpse Agreed! My thoughts on this game haven't changed at all. It looks very static, players locked in positions on the ship... It looks like a glorified on rails Disneyland ride.

While I love the art style... the play style and over statted HUD just puts me off. Why oh why can I see another ships health bar? Trajectory lines.... its just all off!

  • @ecljpse said in How a real pirate ship should look like!:

@symbioto The mechanics are completely different... MUCH simpler.

How some moving/waving/shaking part on the ship such as a rope/sockets/chains or better character animation (not only moving hands like if there is a hydraulic steering system)on steering wheel could affect the gameplay ?

There is a clear lack of details in everything and this in not due of genre or style.
No details, no missions, no ships, no enemies, not much to do in seas once you bored to kill some nubies and bring useless crates for useless outfits

I know you can explain everything...but it will not add more content :)

  • @symbioto

Oh, it's one of those threads.

Sorry, I thought we were actually having a discussion on ship design and function.

    My mistake.

  • Woah. You can't compare Sea of Thieves to any game. ForkKnife is that way buddy -------}

  • @symbioto the only think I liked about this was the Portuguese references! Yeah I'm Portuguese eheh.

And we took a great part during piracy and world discovery era.
Just so you know, the piracy code was first made by a Portuguese pirate, Bartolomeo Português.

  • @v**a-hombre said in How a real pirate ship should look like!:

    @symbioto

Oh, it's one of those threads.

Yep it's all parts of one chain - Less details than promised, less missions, less everything compare to ANY other game, appearing forum ghost switching any criticise opinions to lols and lulz with his gifs, tons of empty promises and "great new addons" like megalodons

  • @symbioto a dit dans How a real pirate ship should look like! :

Pfff, who talks about realism... Number of details and customisations we supposed to have in a normal realised game I tried to show to a blind and deaf crowd.

'Cause you think Rare isn't working hard perhaps ? You said earlier that you were only talking about details but we're talkin about the whole game. It's okay, that's a good thing. So let's see...

This game is a piece of art. Something you can't force yourself to like. They surely had to think about their ideas for years before bringing it to Sea of Thieves.

Especially with the last Hungering Deep content : Since when did you see a game where you actually can talk with other players and make friends like this ? Where actually can you meet unknown people and have true fun with them, Without mocking them, Without your actual IRL mates, with real interactions SoT Obliges you to do to progress ? All the multiplayers, coop, online games are socialy Empty since you do not have to even talk or write anything to win something and progress.
I never experimented mutual aid like this since World of Warcraft Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King (When I began to play it). And it was also really different.
But this game managed to do it much more times better and keep it epic with it's environment and musics. This first Update was just there to show-off what Rare have in mind with their concept. That's refreshing and many players are confident about the future of SoT.

They didn't take all this time for content. They had an idea, they invent a game with it.
Content will come, now they found their community. More details will surely come, in the limits of a cartoon-ish game.

If you cannot manage to understand this, no doubt you'll have more fun in playing Skull'n Bones. Then we'll say Goodbye !

  • @xenom993

So 5 recoloured items instead of 5 differently modelled items as a "new content" it's not laziness but "limits of a cartoon-ish game", maybe that's why we don't have any nice cartoonish little details, because of some mythic limits...

Thx for explanation, now I know if you choose cartonish style you can just make 1 low-poly model and 4 same characters of different colour and make a hit!

Hm, sadly devs of Borderlands didn't knew it.

  • @ant-heuser-kush said in How a real pirate ship should look like!:

you called people blind and deaf, but here you are bashing Rare and talking about everything but the ships.

Because ppl completely ignored my words about different genre and all reaction were - "it's completely different genre, how you can compare it!"...

I love cartoonish style, and there is plenty of such games I played since early 90s, but this experience only showing me what cartoonish style doesn't explain lack of details and customisations on ships! And I developed this idea showing that not only we have lack in ship details, but in everything, so it must be not the chosen style, but laziness!
    Clear enough ?

I am very happy for you that you will soon have a game that scratches an itch that SoT apparently does not. With that said, passing judgement on the work ethic of Rare's employees does not reflect well on you.
