Sorry but Rare does what Rare wants.
And if Rare says they are keeping view distances in-line with consoles so you can't just upgrade hardware to get advantage, then that's what it is. So, theoretically if they downgrade view distances on the console for player spawn, they must also do so on PC, whether one likes it or not.
You don't have to like it and you also don't have to play this game.
I take the good with the bad.
Rare does what they believe is best for the game and best for the players as a whole. That’s why we’re providing input. The trite “if you don’t like it don’t play” remarks are decidedly unhelpful. Rendering distance is an issue that matters to some players. All we’re asking is to be heard, and to seek a mutually agreeable solution. Clearly we like the game and intend to keep playing or we wouldn’t bother. Thanks.

If you don't like that, SoT ain't the game for you.
Not helping.
Trouble is we've not heard from Rare their reasoning for downgrading the Lod have we? I play on Xbox and have noticed a massive drop in lod and personally I had no issues at launch at all. It all got worse after the very first patch.
From my experience, my Xbox ran the game fine WITH the better (launch) graphics and have never suffered too many bugs etc. ( a few bad lag instances at one point but it seems this was something to do with a dodgy patch lol).
All I'm saying is how do we know "it's the xboxs" fault that we are all suffering downgrades in the graphics dept. To me (in no way claiming to be an expert here) it seems more like it would be a server issue, as in it can't handle the data.
Just to add I'm NOT anti cross play lol. Would really like to know if this is permanent and if we are all going to get those graphics back ever.
@themustamissed said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):
PC only players never see an issue. You don't think seeing how many people and what they have on their ship and so on is not an advantage? What are you smoking? I'll have some!
Are you saying that "mythical" gamers should see the same as "cursed" ones? Why not displaying at least a box instead of players for those who have issues, if what you want is information of how many players are on the ship? Something is better than nothing, and quality depending on graphic muscle. Now, displaying an island or fort in better details is not really an advantage that can be exploited, or at least I don't see how it provides any game-breaking advantage.

Where’s the proper place for trolling?
@personalc0ffee did ye mean Hot Topic? Be that where the trolls are?
drop game for Xbox One. PC an' Xbox One X only \o/ problem solved.
@personalc0ffee Ah. Well I can report ye see a lot o' trolls in Hot Topic too. An a lot o' people who look like they wanna be pirates too come to that... It be a most vexing place.
@personalc0ffee said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):
@nd3e They can't do that, you'd have advantage over consoles.
They have specifically talked about having render distances being the same so that a PC user can't just pop in a newer gpu than they had, and suddenly have more distance and advantage.
If you don't like that, SoT ain't the game for you.
Everytime they downgrade it on the console, it's going to get downgraded on the PC, to stay in line with the resolution and draw distance so PC users, myself included, do not get an advantage.
With exception to fps. The game clearly allows better fps with a better system. I am upgrading mine this weekend to get 60 fps at high rez.
@nd3e said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):
I'm playing on the highest preset on PC and the islands just look horrible up to like 200m away. So what's the point of having a spyglass if you can only see blobs from the distance. Suddenly within about 200m distance, the game switches to a detailed version of the assets. This is getting worse with every patch, when "performance improvements" are made. If you have to downgrade the LOD because of the weak computing power of the consoles, then fine... but leave the PC out of this. I did not spend 500€ for a video card and 350€ for a CPU to play with console potato settings. SoT LOD
The LOD and inconceivably short distances at which objects pop in is also a problem on console and was better before the first launch patch.
This is not a PC vs Xbox issue, but rather an issue with performance related to Rare’s poor design decisions in how to stream in game assets and LOD’s, which was changed after the first patch (complete game redoenload).
They locked the one mega post on the subject and said that there was no issue. Please keep this issue in the limelight, as with enough negative exposure they may feel inclined to acknowledge and fix the issues.
They also need to fix random FPS drops while looking in specific directions on big islands like Plunder Valley. A GTX 1080 should not drop to 20+FPS in spots alongside largely decreased GPU utilization.

If what you’re saying is true, I think that’s a massive mistake. Multiplayer aside, a huge part of this game’s appeal is the beautiful graphics and immersion. Crippling that immersion for the sake of console players is a tremendous disservice to the game and to those who have invested in high end systems. I think any perceived advantage is minimal.
Would you rather they can shoot you when you can't even see them on the screen? Because that is exactly what would happen.
I'm noticing less and less discrepancy in view distances from my console friends, compared to my PC. They are bringing them in-line to one another.
Or it could all just be a huge glitch, who knows.
AS for actual truths, yes Rare's stated they keep the view distances equal between both platforms.
I would rather Rare design a game that you can see as far as you can shoot, like every other shooter in existence. We are not talking long ranges here, maybe a couple hundred meters. It's pathetic.

This is not a shooter, Please remove yourself from the conversation as you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. This is nothing like a shooter, Stay informed my friend, clearly you know your stuff.... SMH
Odd I do alot of shooting.
So what's this game like, where you can justify terrible lod limitations? You sound like a seasoned pro, so I'm all ears.
Render distance is back to being awful.
It’s not just aesthetics. It’s game altering. It’s affecting both platforms. It really needs addressing again because, as I’ve stated too many times, it makes the spyglass obsolete. One of only a few tools - obsolete.
It’s so tiresome that a fundamental game design implementation is proving so bloody difficult for Rare to sort out.
@katttruewalker said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):
I had this view at Daggertooth last night, it's not ever been this bad and it did clear after a few moments, but I think there's definitely something not quite right - I'd file a report with Support so they know people are experiencing these issues.
PUBG called. They want their textures back. 😜
@nd3e Consoles are NOT the lowest denominator of this game. There are far more weaker PC out there that play this. Those are what dictate what the game allows you to see at what point. You also didn't consider the implications of internet data speeds and how fast the islands assets load in. Just remember, the Xbox isn't playing on Cursed settings, so it's not the weakest. It's those playing on PC with Pentium processors, 4 gigs of ram, and intel graphics from that CPU. Not everyone has a 1080ti.
Why should the majority suffer for the few?
If you can load in super quick and see draw for miles it shouldn’t be punished. If your machine can’t see what’s in front of your nose - so be it. There is no real advantage.
It makes no sense at all to nerf the vast majority of machines. It makes no sense to nerf the Xbox.
Rare’s vision is flawed... and blobby!
@sappyelephante said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):

What is frustrating about this whole issue is that Rare responded once(?) on the forum here saying "render distance is the same and has always been the same". Community screenshots and video clips have shown otherwise, and Rare hasn't said anything else since then.
I posted this before when the issue of parity came up:
The distance at which you first see a ship silhouette on the horizon is the same on all platforms. I can understand that to keep things even and fair.
However, nothing to confirm whether LOD of those ships is the same.
Personally, as a PC player, I want to see performance improvements across the board. A lot of areas still suffer from frame-rate issues. I think they will get better as Rare optimises more (I think Katt posted the tech blog explaining what they are doing), but LODs might have to suffer temporarily until they do.
@personalc0ffee said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):
@tyburn-ketch Need to point out that the PC community for this game specifically, is not the major population base.
Rare gave stats on that back during the betas. PC base is minority, got news for us. This is a console game and the majority of players are Xbox.
So that argument is not going to work here but normally I'd be with you.
I think we’ve crossed some wires here. I said that the Xbox has noticed a sharp decrease in render distance as well as pcs.
My point was why nerf the majority (Xbox and pcs) for the few (pants pcs)?
I don’t know about you man ... but I’m getting proper jaded going over this topic again.
It’s destroying the game for me. As soon as I see blatantly awful “pops”, and I can’t use the spyglass because items haven’t rendered in when I’m practically on top of them, I just want to quit out.
And I often do.
But we shouldn’t all have to put up with poor render distance just because a few pcs can’t handle anything better.
It’s a poor model.
When I’ve had a poor pc I just accepted I’d be at a disadvantage. I don’t understand why Rare want to make it awful for everyone just to make a few people feel good about themselves.
It makes no sense.

I’ve not found one valid use for the spyglass yet except it marks the people using it to look my direction as scared and worth sinking.
The ship silhouettes are ridiculously dark against the background and very easy to pick out. Individual players have wonky rendering so you usually won’t be able to see them with a spyglass. It’s basically a paperweight with no utility in this game.

Yep. This is not a PC vs Xbox issue. Render distance for assets and islands, as well as LOD, is garbage across all platforms. Period.
Rare needs to go back to the engine configuration they had before the first post launch patch and optimize it.
This should not be an issue at launch, let alone months after. This was marketed as a finished AAA game, with a price tag to match, but they delivered a buggy, half baked early-access shell. Something needs to light a fire under them to help them get motivated to focus and produce better work.

I’d imagine people leaving might do that ... or perhaps no one else joining would be more reason to focus.
I completely agree with you. I’ve been fighting this issue since the first patch. It’s nothing short of a discrace.
@personalc0ffee said in LOD has been downgraded again (on PC):
@andreas5524 It isn't about low and high. It's about advantage. Player rending and ship rendering are specifically kept in line to one another.
Sure you can see farther but you still can't hit anything cause it isn't there yet.
Player rendering distance, sure. We are properly screwed on that. Rendering distance of high res island models? That doesn't affect pvp at all. They should have a higher setting for PCs. I get a 140-155 fps on the ocean.
There is no reason to not implement this if it does not affect PVP interaction. Why hold back? This game is supposedly going to be developed over 10 year period. Why hamstring your own game and how it CAN look? I'm sure every artist and modeler, effects and shader employee would love to see the title they worked on looking as good as it can look.
One other thing, why does it seem like there are pretty much two levels of LOD on these islands? I mean they look like melted icecream and suddenly pop in to a full high res model. Is there a problem with having multiple LOD displays for models? Isn't that the whole purpose for them is to help manage resources but also do it in a way where it isn't so obvious to the player?
I'm curious how many LOD models they have for player characters at long range?
