Larger Galleon Crews

  • Give galleon captains the option to create a larger crew of up to 10. This could give more options for role assignment; repairing, cooking, sails, cannoneers, helm, and other things. While this would be completely unbalanced in a regular server. There could be specified servers where only larger crews could join. For example 5-6+ players. This could remove the unfairness that would be created but also allow those crews to have larger battles more frequently and create higher risk and higher rewards for winning battles. There could also be other things to balance like starting recourses, recourse availability from structures, stronger events like skeleton crew buffs and whatnot. Could also create longer play sessions.

  • @redeyesith a lot of those don’t really have a way to counter the imbalance it would make. Like more cannons or buffing the galleon while keeping everything else the same. I said there could be extra servers for only galleons. Or give a post where I can see an example of this.

    Rofl. No. 10 versus 1, 2, or 3 would be literally unsinkable.

    The devs aren't going to bring back special servers like Arena had.

  • Player caps is a big one under your proposal. Servers can handle between 16-20 players currently as I recall. I think at the best we've had it was 24.

    So that is 2 Ships on these servers effectively (less than 2 Ships if we are currently at 16 still). Maybe you could get more players in since there are less Ships loaded (and those do make up the bulk of the strain), but that is a pretty small pool of Ships. So now we probably have to start talking about special smaller Maps just for this Mode so the two Ships have a more reasonable chance of coming into contact. You'd also have to completely rebalance the Galleon effectively making it a new ship type with that many people on it just for this mode which now starts cropping up the issues we had with Arena where updates to the game probably start having knock on effects to things and making it a nightmare again.

    That's just a couple for you.

  • I think one of the intended fundamental challenges of this game is that whatever ship you choose, you always have slightly more jobs to keep on top of, than you have crew members to keep on top of them. You're supposed to feel slightly overwhelmed. You're supposed to feel like while you're doing one job, another is falling behind. That's part of the design.

    Being good at the game isn't just about being good at each individual job (Cannons, bilge, helm, boarding etc.). It's about learning to balance them all. If you have enough people to cover every role so no one has to multitask, I think you would lose an important part of what makes the game challenging and fun.

  • Rare wouldn't want to split the player base, the number of players on each server is limited and I doubt there would be the demand for it.

    It would be a server of boarding spam - 6 folk trying to board your ship. Like Orcs at Helms Deep.
