Partner Program is a bad sign for the sea of thieves

  • Since the only reward system is cosmetics and we barely are getting new stuff. Rare has brought it to are attention that so much content for the game will now be locked behind how successful of a streamer you are. So if you want stuff you have to cheese the system and make enough fake mixer accounts to meet the requirements for the perks.

Ive never been a fan of exclusive content of any kind. Why make a player feel like they missed out just because they had to go to work or something? Maybe they don't have the time to put into a mixer?

Liked the game as it was during launch when every single thing was tied to reputation and not time limited commendations.

Whats funny is he has me blocked lololol so he won't see me agreeing with him. Take the upvote buddy. On the rare occasion I actually agree with him and he won't see it LOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • You don’t have to unlock everything, if you aren’t a streamer, are you really going to spend hours and hours becoming a successful streamer with thousands of followers, just to get some sails? That’s nuts. You don’t have to unlock everything.

  • @peteloaf777 they get free ancient coins for the paid cosmetics. As well as early access beyond insider. They are basically getting the next generation of cosmetics for free.

Early access beyond insider? Free ancient coins? (Although this one makes sense from a marketing PoV actually)

Where are you getting this stuff from? Any proof? If it is true so what?

  • It sucks that i can't stream on my pc through the xboxapp anymore like i could before, since they removed this option.
And running streamlabs or anyother thingy just eats my potatocomputer's cream so...
Need to play more on my Xbox to be able to stream nowadays haha

  • @boxcar-squidy https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/announcing-partner-programme

  • @blatantwalk4260 ah I see.

Still don't see anything about creators getting access to content before insiders.

There's a bit about early access to promo materials, but that's just things like having the Obsidian cannons to show your audience before a twitch drop etc. Which is necessary from a marketing perspective or streamers would be left saying "tune into my stream for twitch drops, I can't show you what they look like, but trust me they're cool"

Rare have also themselves said that they're starting with streamers but will have stuff for other types of content creators.

As a final point, you say in your OP that the only option is using view bots. Do you really think that you're becoming a partner using view bots and Rare aren't going to notice? View botting is against the code of conduct you signed up to as a member of the creator crew (at least it should be, I honestly haven't checked).

I don't really see anything in the Partnership Programme that would be of any use to someone who wasn't already a legitimate SoT streamer with an established channel and audience.

  • I am not seeing a problem, its getting the community out and about to develop publicity for the game at almost no cost. I am perfectly content with not getting every cosmetic. Even with putting them behind a wall like this, if you want the cosmetics you need to earn them.

However, the whole ancient coin thing isn't far off from what many other companies do. If we look at League of Legends and Riot games, your more popular streamers (Usually LCS pro players), will provide them with accounts with all the skins unlocked. Free publicity at no cost for them. The accounts themselves will already be at level 30 so they can immedietly start ranked as well. So Rare doing something similar isn't far from standards used in other companies.

  • It's not the audience i want to be around.
Players Gamers can kill the game for me!

Rare is attracting the sort of gamers again who are less playfull but more egocentric, narcistic and such.

The more the Sea of Thieves became popular the more it drives me away because it's attracting people who imho barely play the game together and treat me as their fellow players, but instead feel superior, act rather undignified etc...

  • The important point here is not that they give some "exclusive cosmetics" for streames, the MAIN POINT is WHY IS YEAR 2 OF SEA OF THIEVES AND WE DONT HAVE NEW COSMETICS!!!!!?????!?!?!?!? WE SHOULD HAVE A THOUSAND!!! And they barely put anything since "annyversary update". This is just dissapointing.

Game based on cosmetics, but no cosmetics, Ok, make sense.

    Yehaaaa!!
Spread the curse in the seas!!

  • I'm a little lost as to what sort of brainstorming sessions Rare have been having of late.
Surely this game needs content much more than anything else and this past few months it has felt as if that has been put aside in favour of getting players to stream.
Stream what??? We have seen and done it all already.
The Arena has gone stale and been totally neglected since it was introduced. Everything has been nerfed to the point of pointlessness.

Now I'm not an insider, so there might be massive amounts of new content ready to drop that I am unaware of. I hope so for this games sake. Because Gamepass are now constantly adding good titles into their library now and this game is starting to feel like it has peaked.

  • @needsmokes

Good point about "what to stream"?

As someone who does not watch streamers or YT'ers and maybe don't get it because i'm too old and cannot see the entertainemt value -
especially because the way they do entertain - it's more like the FB or instagram quality of posting your food and show your neckline or play tricks on others and make the voyeurs laugh on others costs while embarass them and make them look like fools.
I still miss someone streaming and really add to the community and their fellow players.

What would be interesting to stream is a crew roleplaying!
No i dont want to see you sitting there and do cosplay and bumbling entertainemt.
I would watch some people give their characters a voice and RP among themself and important with other crews. The pirate characters are interesting gamewise, because who cares for John and Susan showing their new gamerchair, their dog, cat, neckline, hat, beard or hairstyle?
I'm maybe interested in people who give their pirates a voice and act like a pirate ingame. Make them have characteristics.
Who of these so called Entertainers sacrifices a win for good RP or entertainment?
Who of these so called Entertainers, make fun on their own costs?
And maybe accept to loose for entertainings sake and make this a thing?

C'mon all the hippocrisy again about this.
    It's exhibitionits and voyeurs.
It's narcistic people and those who have less confidence and need this sort of idols.
The whole thing is not entertaining, but pitiful at best.

Name me a streamer who's Crew is roleplaying and not have themself and their person main part of the video and show off their new whatever and show themself?

The only entertaining stream about playing this game would be players roleplaying this game with others and weigh the entertaining of their watchers more than winning and themself.

    But guess what?
If you are such a person you would never stream and exhibit yourself to the internet.
    Why should you?

Because they would rather charge you for a alteration of the sea dog vessel and just slap a bird and a bear on it and pretend it's special ?

    😂😂😂

There's ya fill for cosmetics, now pay us, much love ...rare

    🙄

  • @troubled-cells True, mate!

It's just a shame that by year 2 in a cosmetics based game, we dont have the proper amount of cosmetics! How much does it take to create a hat? or a Belt? Are u serious, Rare?!?! It's cool that you create Black Market to release variants for the temporal cosmetics, But seriously... they could have been realising cosmetics every each month since the launch of the game!! We would have tons of that by this time!! But noooo....

Im sure they have a lot of cosmetics already but WHY THE ***** they dont realease them!?!?! IT'S YEAR 2 AND THE GAME IS EVOLVING SLOWLY, SO WHY CANT REALEASE THIS INSIGNIFICANT "THINGS" THAT IS THE BASE IN WHICH THEIR GAME WAS BUILT !!!!!????? This is just absurd. Seriously, I can't remember the last time I saw something in a shop (inside Sea of Thieves) I wanted to buy. The steps this game is taking to "improve" are just driving me insane... Seriously Rare, *** are you doing.

    Yehaaaa!!
Spread the curse in the seas!!

  • Allthough, isen't it just the Sails streamers get? - I did stream for 5min and got them.
So those are easy to obtain even for newbies or none-hc players.

Because they would rather sell them or give them to "Stweemarz" instead of actually incentivising the rest of the player base with new non time limited items, that can be purchased with gold instead of doubloons ?

  • It’s really not that much content as you state. And why shouldn’t those who are going the extra mile get some extra stuff? People who grind Athenas can get a hat. People who don’t have that time to invest get no hat.

  • @blatantwalk4260 OMG it is not even a hand full of cosmetics you are ranting about, lol

  • The fact that people even upvote your thread is beyond me, you are just guessing and making stuff up.

    Wouldn't be the first time.

Although i do honestly think rare needs to sort the standard cosmetics out a bit and put a few new styles up a bit more frequently.

There's no denying it's been neglected a bit.

I tend to watch YouTube stuff as opposed to actual streamers. Neebs Gaming's run on the Tall Tales has been pretty enjoyable. Otherwise I prefer videos where the gaming is more background to funny conversations/improv comedy ala Funhaus.

  • @needsmokes I mean that list of goodies is massive. It seems this game is becoming less about the nornal players and more about the streamers. Hopefully once its fully released Atlas will be good enough to put this game to bed

  • @boxcar-squidy Throwing all these special privileges at streamers especially the ability to get paid cosmetics for free is just them favoring a group of the community. They are basically showing the care about the major streamers over the rest of us. Why should anyone else play this game if everything is going to be about thousands of people watching some dude play the game. All thats happening is Rare is selling themselves out to major streamers to make the game popular by giving them access to all this stuff that streamers will be able to show off but hey guess what odds are its something the streamer got free but you have to pay real cash for it. While the base game remains empty of anything new but oh wait we can paint our stupid underwear.

  • @blatantwalk4260 streamers get all this free stuff that the rest of us have to pay for?

Jasus, it's their job. You think a McDonalds employee is super stoked when Ronald McDonald decides that everyone who works for him has to wear a new hat?

If I made my money streaming the very last thing I would ever consider spending it on would be a digital hat for my work avatar.

  • @boxcar-squidy job :D... the most are just sitting in front of the cam and talking to the teens while they playing a game.its just social and not creative;) or entertainment

  • @weedstar-deluxe yeah true, but it's still a form of employment. I might think that what I do is more worthwhile, but at the end of the day, whatever puts food on the table. Now I enjoy my job, but when I'm not in work, I don't even want to think about work stuff. I imagine being a streamer is no different.

Paid for cosmetics will not mean the same thing to someone who earns their money playing that game as they will for someone who only play the game for fun. It just wont have the same value to them as it would to someone else because of its association with working.

At the end of the day, at least half of the people I hear passing judgement on streamers for their choice of career are children, who have never worked a day in their lives.

This entire thread reeks of entitlement, I mean what's the basic premise here? "Rare shouldn't give stuff to the people they have brought on board to promote this game because not being handed stuff for doing nothing offends me?"

    Yeah, well, I disagree.

  • @boxcar-squidy streamers do nothing but play video games and make money. There is zero reason for all these things to be handed to people who make money to do nothing as it is but thats not the point so quit changing the direction of the subject. The point is Rare is prioritizing streamers and only caring about them they took the only reward system in sea of thieves locked it behind a paywall and then decided to give the community reskins instead of new cosmetic content as rewards for completing events. Then they decided to make this stuff behind paywalls free to major streamers along with other things that is not available to anyone else. Streamers do exactlty the same thing as the rest of us play a game they just get paid for it by having people watch them play a game this.is also bad for sea of thieves it potentially brings in other streamers who know nothing of this game and they get early access and have an input before the rest of the community. Summit1g is a good example of how streamers who werent apart of the community can come in throw thier streamer influence around and cause negative impacts on the game.

  • All the partner program is is just acts of favortism to what Rare is now treating as an elite group theu dont care about thier community just the streamers.

  • @blatantwalk4260

This isn't completely true, streamers provide free publicity and attract players too the game through their celebrity. Why do you think Fortnite and Ninja partnered up? Hell, this isn't far off why any mainstream celebrities endorses any product. People see well known faces, or faces of people they follow, they are more likely to use or play said product. This isn't some new idea. Their is quite an easy return on investment too. Giving them in-game currency is no different than a store making returns in the form of credit. Credit requires a person to basically keep their money within their sphere. This can be applied to skins, because the skins have no supply to worry about, so it cost nothing to just give some out for free. Meanwhile, in return they get a public (maybe well known) figure advertising their product for free. Low margins for an easy return on investment.

This type of program isn't new, nor is it new to gaming as well. I see no reason to get upset over it. Ultimately if this program is a success, this means the player-base should grow. Sure, we may miss out on a few skins, but its nothing to QQ about.

  • @blatantwalk4260 yeah I see where you are coming from, I'm not saying you're wrong to feel that way. I just don't feel the same.

This is 2019 - social media influencer is an actual career.

Does that bother me on a fundamental level? Yes.

Do I think I can change the world one forum post at a time? Nah.

I'm too old and jaded to care about how other people make their money. This is just the world we live in now. Get enough internet points and people give you free stuff. Wierd but hey, it's better than slavery.

  • There is a content "creator" bubble that is going to burst, and soon. It's not sustainable and the developers of this and other games are still too starry-eyed to realize that streamers are not the best players, streamers are not the same kind of players as their core audience... its going to backfire.

  • @blatantwalk4260 said in Partner Program is a bad sign for the sea of thieves:

To be honest, it's nothing other games or companies don't do regarding "big" streamers, when you consider the cost of advertising your game compared to throwing a few goodies towards a streamer to get advertising, it's a no brainer really.

And I never want to see this game fail, I want them to admit their errors, fix them and keep making improvements for everyone.

And as for Atlas! If I get killed by another sheep!!!!!! Steep learning curve on that game!! but surprisingly good on the Xbox one X.
