    Welcome to Fleet of Thieves!
We are the largest structured clan for Sea of Thieves that you will find! With over 4,500 members, you will have no trouble finding a competent crew to play with any time of day.

    What makes us unique?
Fleet of Thieves attracts the most players for a reason. We are pleasantly simplistic in the way we run things, and there is no doubt that you will agree. Our structure and mission is simple, fun, and effective.

The progression in our ranks is unique to Fleet of Thieves. In order to progress through the ranks, you have to meet certain requirements. Once you meet the requirements for the next rank, you submit your standing for officer review and begin your work up the ladder! Everyone loves the feeling of something to work for, and we did our best to deliver that to our community.

We are proud of our size because it delivers an experience you can't find in other organizations. Almost anything that you want to do inside the game, you will have others with you to do it. Want to take over an entire 6-ship server and farm gold for your favorite cosmetics? We're perfect for that. You want to have an unlimited arsenal of great people who love to PvP for the upcoming Arena? We've got you covered there too.

    Our Pirate Code (Rules)

These rules are summarized, the full rules are inside the Discord

    • There is a soft age limit of 18. This means you are allowed to be under 18 if you can behave like an adult.
    • You must be fluent in English or close to it.
    • This is not a(n) LFG community. Do not recruit anyone you meet here into your own playgroups/clans/communities. It is disrespectful!
    • The rest of our rules are common sense. Respect others, and don't be that person. We have went a very long time with thousands of people having no strict rules, and it works in our environment perfectly.

    alt text

    How does our hierarchy work?
People like things to work towards. We provide that for you! Our website has all the information you could need about ranking up. Most of our rank requirements rely on your skill and reputation levels in-game. You submit your standing with the utilization of our custom Discord bot for officer review to determine that you are ready to move onto the next rank.

If you're not interested in role progression and are more casual of a person, you'll blend right in too! There's no certain way you have to lean to have a good time here.

    alt text

Full details on how you advance in these ranks can be seen inside the Discord.

As this thread is divulged into a lot of heated discussion, ...

The recent announcement by Rare about proposed crossplay choice, as heard in the Dev Update video of 30th January has kicked off a whole lot of discussion within the Community so we thought that a mega thread would be a good idea to collect feedback and opinion in one place.

If you've not seen the video, you can watch it here:

Official Sea of Thieves Developer Update: January 30th 2019

What Joe has said specifically is:

'If you're playing on console and you're using a controller you will have the option to only matchmake with other players on console using a controller.'

'There will be two pools of players'

To be implemented prior to Arena.

Wanted to address a few concerns we see some folks have about our future #SeaOfThieves plans. Rest assured our goals are ALWAYS to do the right thing by our players and community; there broadly seems to be 4 key points that needed clarity:

    — Craig Duncan (@Gamerboss) February 3, 2019

Recent quotes from Craig Duncan (Studio Head):

"We aren’t removing crossplay; we are adding an option for console players using controller to opt out of crossplay if they choose. We expect most players, especially in Adventure, to still play using crossplay, but this is important option to add with The Arena coming"

"The crossplay option is not coming in the February update, see Joe’s last dev update for more info, the team is working now on implementation of the option settings & our goal is to have this in & tested prior to The Arena"

"Servers will still have the same density they do today as we spin up Azure servers as players join & backfill new crews into live servers. Our server density is architected to not be affected by the size of our player pop, but to vary the player encounter frequency & stories"

"Our player population is super healthy on both PC and Xbox & has been since launch. While we don’t tweet usage data reactively, we will figure out how we share more stats on this soon to give context why players don’t need to worry about our live player or platform populations"

"As I said at the top, we have always strived for everyone to enjoy #SeaOfThieves whether you are a brand-new player or someone that has been with us from the start, we prioritise all players & all platforms together – thanks!"

We'll be redirecting discussion here where necessary.

As a reminder, the Pirate Code is more than just guidelines (though the reference really never gets old), but the rules of the community and game that we expect all members to abide by when participating on the forums. Any member who fails to abide by the code may find themselves put in the brig, or removed from the community.

We also have Forum Rules, which we moderate to.

    AOD Bear79

Ahoy m'earties and welcome to ClanAOD, a crew worth sai...

PC Preferred/Xbox Possible (Mandatory Teamspeak Participation)

Angels of Death: Sea of Thieves Division
So yer looking to throw yourself in with the lot of us in the Angels of Death are ya? Well ye be standing in the right tavern. Sailing across the vast open seas to the edge of the world and back, Angels of Death is a PC based gaming clan. We operate as an independent organization focused on the acquisition of massive amounts of booty! AOD's reputation on the high seas for overcoming the highest of waves is well earned from 18 years of prosperity and camaraderie.

While we're all pirates, dastardly acts of exploitation and cheating will be met with the sharp end of a cutlass and bilge rats will be shown no quarter! Ruthlessness aside, the Angels of Death make excellent fleet partners and ship mates. We have the heftiest of purses, access to the many of the merchants across the seas, and routinely out sail our competitors in our collective pursuit of booty.

    COMMUNICATION
We operate a TeamSpeak 3 server and have an exclusive AOD XBOX Club. Our crewmates hail from the four corners of the globe with varying levels of experience from beginners, just gaining their sea legs, to seasoned veterans that can drink anyone else under the table. This is a place where swashbucklers of equal wit and charm can sail together and landlubbers can hone their seafaring skills and become talented pirates in their own right. Members can make use of our growing library of useful information and resources located in our private forum.

    CODE OF CONDUCT
AOD is made up of gamers from all over the world that come from different backgrounds and are made up of men and women of all races, creeds, and preferences. In order to assure that our valued members can relax and enjoy themselves, we enforce a Code of Conduct that is designed to reduce drama and prevent humiliation and abuse. Violations of this code are dealt with appropriately. We are here to play games.

    SERVERS AND EVENTS
One of the best parts about sailing with AOD is that you’ll never sail alone. The open sea is a dangerous place, and you can be certain that when trouble finds ya, your clan mates will have your back. We meet at the tavern and play informally on a daily basis as a well oiled machine on the high seas.
AOD also conducts routine training as needed for a variety of topics, such as navigation, ship piloting, combat training, and other topics as requested by our mates. Every legendary pirate lord has to start somewhere, right?

    APPLY TO DIVISION
In order to be eligible for membership in the Sea of Thieves division, you must meet the following oaths:

    • Be at least 18 years of age (Firm Rule)
    • Be on TeamSpeak whenever you are ingame https://www.teamspeak.com/en/downloads

I'm hearing some clans, groups, or independent pirates are really hardcore in SoT. The only thing we're hardcore in is our passion for the game and having a good time. AOD is a self styled casual clan, especially within the SoT division. Just want to relax into merchant missions or shipwreck diving? Yup we do that. Wanna go crush a fort and swat away enemy interception? Haha! We do that too. We do it all, but why we do it is simply for the fun of it. No competitive squeaker salt here. Win or lose, it's all about a good time with your mates. Our numbers are strong and steadily growing! Captain Anvil and I cordially invite you to join our crew. Hope to see you aboard ship soon, matey!

Thank you so much for all your entries, we're going to ...

    Ahoy!

Not a day goes by here at Rare where I don’t hear someone playing Sea of Thieves shout, “that should be an achievement!”.

This is a sentiment shared by our community, even just a cursory glance at these forums offer a wealth of threads detailing cool stories that have actually happened during our Technical Alpha, or general ideas around what would make for a great achievement in the future. This gave us an idea; what if we invited YOU the community to join us in the Closed Beta and, with your best thinking hooks on, help us create a new achievement!

When the Closed Beta kicks off TODAY, the 24th of January at 12pm GMT, we’ll be opening a forum thread (THIS ONE!) to gather up all your best ideas. When Closed Beta ends on Wednesday the 31st of January, we’ll then close this forum thread, and lock ourselves in the Brig until we’ve picked our 5 favourite achievement ideas. Once we’ve gathered those top 5, hopefully someone will let us out of the Brig and we can pass the list back to the community to vote on your favourite!

Now onto the rewards! The winning achievement idea will become a fully realised Sea of Thieves achievement in the future, PLUS the winner will have their name written into our credits parchment. As if that wasn’t enough, the winner will also receive a signed piece of artwork from the whole team, and a wealth of extra Sea of Thieves booty!

To enter, please read the rules below and post your entry on our forum in this thread using this template:

Achievement Name: No more than 44 characters – e.g ‘Bone-Cronch’
Achievement Description: No more than 100 characters – e.g ‘Kill a skeleton while it's 'cronching' on a banana.’
(Optional): A suggested image idea for the Achievement.

    Rules

    • Please only use this forum post to add ideas, we want to keep this free from discussion - BUT you can upvote to your hearts content!
    • And for ALL the rules, you can grab a tankard and read up on them here.

Thanks and good luck to all the pirate achievers out there!

Ahoy all, this thread has been locked because it no longer i...

I fell like you should get more xp regardless of turning the chest in. If someone attacks you and takes your loot, you should lose all the gold. Should you not get credit for at least finding the chest though, for figuring out the riddles or map. That way if you spend two hours on a voyage and get attacked, at least it wasn't all a waste.

(I edited the heading in agreement with the commenters. XP based on voyage completion instead of turning in. Gold reward however should only be with turning it in. These two things don't have to go together. That way if we get looted, all of our two hour voyage isn't completely lost)

    Update about realism:
Although most people seem to agree with me, a few of you are arguing about realism. Keep in mind this is a game and as such should be enjoyable. Many games reward the player for doing lots of task regardless of turning in a quest, most rpg games specifically. There is nothing wrong with rewarding the player for doing things. How realistic is it that I can eat bananas while swimming under water in Sea of Thieves to keep from drowning. It logically doesn't make any sense yet I am glad they did it to make the game more enjoyable so you don't die every time you explore a ship wreck.

Welcome to The Iron Fleet's official recruitment thread. We are a veteran community that has been connecting more and more pirates since before launch! Keep in mind that there is no current in-game support for fleets, but that won't stop us from socializing, playing together, and growing as a community! We accept all pirates regardless of experience, provided they abide by the rules, and will aim to help new players along their journey. We have players from all around the world, so it should never be a problem finding someone to play with. The Iron Fleet is based off the fleet of the same name from George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire." Feel free to role-play along, but it's not required!

    1. Follow Microsoft's Terms of Conditions and Rare's Pirate Code
    2. Must be fluent in English

    Job Titles
These job titles are purchased with doubloons, the currency our server uses. You can earn doubloons through a variety of means. Some of these include a daily, ranked based salary, gambling, participating in lottery style raffles, and by doing certain "jobs".
    alt text

    Member Ranks
We have a dual ranking system which grants you the following roles based on your activity within the server. Members are sorted by this rank.

    alt text
If you're an SoT Insider or Streamer, let us know! We've got special roles for those as well!

    alt text

To start, we've added an entirely new role and ranking system. While staff ranks (Junior and Senior Officers) will only be given by appointment, every member has the chance to rank up in the fleet, up to the rank of Captain and Protector of the Realm. The first set of roles are purchasable through the market, so be sure to manage your money well! Each role has a different price, and comes with different salaries (paid weekly).

In addition to the roles, you can also purchase or invest in a number of trade goods. There are several, unique items in the store with specific flavor texts that are displayed whenever you use them! New items from far away lands may show up in the store at any time, so keep your eyes peeled!

Lastly, we've implemented gambling as a sport and spectacle. You can participate in or simply cheer on a cockfight outside the tavern, throw dice in the back alleyway, or go to a casino type area where you can experience more exotic games, such as roulette and blackjack! You can also buy a ticket to a lottery style raffle, to gain extra doubloons or cool prizes!

    alt text

To join our ranks and start plunderin' your way across the seven seas, submit the application template, found below, to this thread. In the meantime, join our discord and say hi! Once you've joined, simply read the rules, hit the emote indicating that you've read them, and a Junior or Senior Officer will get you set up!

What makes you a potential Cutthroat:

They say that not long ago, beyond the horizon, a fleet of ghastly and gnarled ships arose from the Blood Sea. The black raised, bearing the distinctive mark of the Cutthroats; notorious and ruthless pirates. Fathers tell their children what they believe to be tall tales of the flag, warning them about the perils of the sea and of the dangers that lurk atop its unforgiving tides. Captains remind their crews of the superstition that so much as a glancing sight of the flag brings with it a cost to bear--a curse that would take the very souls of those that perish to its tattered sails.

Rumour spread quickly of accursed ships spreading havoc and discord within the boundaries of the Sea of Thieves. A fleet of scorned ships come to reclaim the sea and the treasures she holds--a fleet that causes dread in even the most hardened of pirates.

Their wake runs red with the blood of those that dare and their ships are pouring with gold. This is the tale of the Skull and Three...this is the legend of the Cutthroats.

Hello there Pirates, old and new!

Now that we are in the first week of launch we're relaunching (ha!) these Mega Thread Series, to ensure that we get your most relevant and up to date feedback on your gameplay experiences.

One of the most important topics, the topic of inclusion as we all want to make sure that Sea of Thieves appeals to as many gamers as possible and everyone enjoys the game regardless of their own personal motivations.

    Discuss below.

    Thank you!

Keep to the Code - The Pirate Code
As a reminder, the Pirate Code is more than just guidelines (though the reference really never gets old), but the rules of the community and game that we expect all members to abide by when participating on the forums. Any member who fails to abide by the code may find themselves put in the brig, or removed from the community.

    Lady Aijou

As this thread was 1 month old, and revived today, it will n...

Hey, I wanted to address a problem regarding the experiences which many players have been through whilst playing the game and the sorts of behaviour this encourages.

The current design of the game is one which many of us can agree is exciting and fun.. the whole concept of undertaking an adventure to obtain treasure and hand it in to earn your rewards is fun, but the idea of making it PvP and adding that element of paranoia and risk on the open ocean makes it even more thrilling. Personally I am making this thread as someone who enjoys voyages and likes PvP occasionally, and being chased when you have loot is very exciting! I will go into this in quite some detail because I want to address what may be on peoples minds when seeing this. Please read the paragraph below if you don't want to, or don't have the time.

TLDR: This idea is about awarding some BONUS reputation earlier in the voyage, in order to stop players experiencing a loss which is currently so extremely deflating, and encourage other methods of play than simply running, if you possess loot and you're being chased perhaps you want to fight back for instance. I will add further information on the reasons and consequences of this, but this is the core idea which will be open for discussion. At the moment I am thinking an amount of reputation which is equivalent to roughly 50% of the current hand in value for loot now. I think this value wouldn't be too big, but big enough to make a positive difference. Note: this is a BONUS, so it wouldn't be deducted from the loot, the loot still holds the same value.

I think one major issue is the concept of loss. There is nothing wrong with losing your loot, and I would never want to remove the aspect of loss and risk from the game. Having said that, I have seen several threads of people literally just complaining, angry, frustrated, even upset that they have lost their loot because currently your loot represents 100% of your time investment for a particular gaming session. Loss in itself, is a part of any game, but in this game loss can potentially mean that at the end of your gaming session you haven't got anything to show for it. I think this encourages a few unhealthy behaviours:

    1) Hostility from the PvE community towards PvP players. Players leaving and uninstalling the game. Asking for their own server and as I've seen quite a few times on the forums, referring to anyone who enjoys PvP as 'trolls'. This isn't fair, all players should be able to experience the game as they want and create their own adventure, PvE, PvP, or PvPvE, and Rare want to support this. My point is I think a large part of this isn't necessarily game design, but partly due to players stealing 100% of your loot and you suddenly dont' have anything to show for it. Even in players who enjoy the game, this isn't a nice feeling.. and although loss is important I just feel this is a bit extreme.

    2) A lack of options. If you have loot on your ship, PvP is NOT an attractive option for you, because yes it is fun, but if you lose, you lose everything from the time you have put in. There have been many times whereby I have been chased by PvP players who have nothing on their ship, and I want to turn and fight, but why would I? Fleeing is an easier, less risky option, and why would I take that risk to fight when I risk losing all my loot and they don't? The current system encourages fleeing as your only real option when encountered by someone hoping to steal your loot.

So, in solution to this I'd like to suggest being awarded a little reputation earlier in your voyage. This was initially being discussed on another thread which is no longer available, however many people agreed that this could be awarded on 'voyage complete'. So you dig up your chests, or kill the skeletons, and when you have finished and the VC sign comes up on the screen, you and all your crew instantly receive some reputation.

    Benefits of this idea

    1) Better experience
The system of loss and risk would be maintained as most of the value of the voyage is STILL within your chest, but any loss is cushioned. Players who are concerned about the idea of risk loss need not be, players will not suddenly be handing their loot to you or unafraid of losing their loot. They will still have to think about their actions and make decisions. The majority of reasonable players don't mind losing their loot, it's the TOTAL loss which is so deflating to some players.

    2) A healthier system for players to consider taking risks
Currently if a player complains about any issue relating to this they are told 'visit an outpost more frequently', but where does that end? Are people expected to do two voyages per outpost visit? One voyage then hand in and repeat? With this idea players STILL need to think about when they visit an outpost and weigh up risk/reward but if they make the wrong decision, are a bit too greedy, or get bested by another pirate, they will still feel like they have gained SOMETHING. Of course it is still a disappointment, but it's a healthier system from a players perspective than the total feeling of loss which is currently experienced.

    3) Players are encouraged to finish their entire voyage
Some players will just obtain the most valuable items from their quest then cancel a voyage half way through, this will encourage players to actually complete their voyage.

    4) More reason to PvP
I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself and several others who commented on the previous thread and we all agreed that with a system like this we would feel far more comfortable with engaging in PvP even with loot. This would make for much more interesting game play and player encounters. At the moment many people feel if they have loot, PvP is an instant no and must be avoided like the plague. Obviously some people may still feel this way but I'm sure in general PvP will increase as players know they will still have made progress on their account even if it goes badly. I know I would!

    5) More loot for PvP
This one is more speculative but I've been saying players should be a bit more encouraged to take risks, one risk is to do more than one voyage before visiting an outpost. Now obviously that is currently an option but if you lose after doing multiple voyages the loss is that much more crippling. Players are more likely to visit more islands or do more voyages if they know they won't get nothing if it goes badly, thus potentially PvP players may find that ships will have slightly more loot than usual if people start doing this. Obviously speculative but several people came to that conclusion when reading this idea as a possible effect!

    Problems with this idea
Like I said, this was discussed on another thread so I'd like to address some of the problems which were raised and my replies to them.

Retaining risk - core to the game
Some people are worried this would remove too much risk - having loot which you want to protect is obviously core to this game! This could easily be achieved by awarding a sensible value of progression. For instance, lets say your combined loot is worth 100 rep points and 100 gold. If the bonus rep in question was 200 rep points, obviously that is ridiculous and people are not going to care about their loot as much, removing the fundamental aspect of the game... If the bonus rep is 10 points. This isn't much and so the loot will still be something every player wants to defend and hand in at an outpost!

Having said that, I honestly feel like 10 isn't enough. Obviously this is subjective but I feel like something hovering around the 50 mark would be a far better value. Big enough to be meaningful, but not enough to provide a lack of incentive to defend your loot.

Some players are also wanting to separate rep and gold - 'voyage complete' = all your rep/XP, hand in at an outpost = all your gold. Personally I think this is a bad idea as it removes too much incentive to defend the loot. Personally I am more interested in rep than gold, so for me I need some rep from handing in the loot otherwise to be honest I won't be too bothered if I lose it or not, and every player needs incentive to defend their loot!

    PvP incentive
Some people have raised the concern that with this change PvE would look far more attractive and have far more incentive than PvP. I would beg to differ, I honestly believe this change would ENCOURAGE PvP because if you have loot, if the correct rep bonus is chosen, players are more likely to weigh up their choices and consider whether PvP is their best option or not. At the moment the only logical thing to do is flee, because the system is all-or-nothing to such an extent.

As for players who ONLY like PvP, well as far as I'm concerned that already lacks incentive. PvP is a less efficient way to get loot than PvE only, you don't know who has loot, how much, where it is, what faction the loot is for... Thus I think this needs addressing any how and I've seen several posts on the forum purely for this purpose, to add incentive.

Just hand in at an outpost more frequently
I agree, this is good solid advice. However there are a few issues with this...

    1. This won't help unless you have successfully completed one+ voyages and handed in the loot, and it is always possible to be attacked while doing this.
    2. So in other words, the current system is enforcing a 'fleeing' style mentality even if people enjoy PvP but just don't want to make a loss... yes going to an outpost is a good strategy, but at the moment I don't feel like it is a strategy, I feel like it is the only real option. With this idea, going to an outpost is still important!! But considering choices such as taking on more voyages before handing in, or engaging in PvP, are suddenly also viable options, and if you make a poor decision, yes you will make a loss, but it isn't such a deflating experience as it currently is.
    1. In addition it essentially discourages players from undertaking multiple voyages at once, because literally, every item of loot obtained is another item which comprises the 100% you will lose, if you are attacked by a PvPer. It sort of encourages Outpost to voyage to outpost, second voyage then outpost, third voyage then outpost. Because if people did all 3 voyages before handing in they have so much more at stake and the loss is even worse! Surely it is better to encourage players to take risks, and they will still pay for it if they make a mistake, but they won't lose 100%!

But this will make the grind so much easier..
This can easily be adjusted... either the total rep from the bonus + handing in at an outpost can equal the current hand in amount, or the total rep required for 50 of each faction can be increased. It shouldn't be difficult for Rare to adjust the grind according to how they want it whilst also incorporating this idea.

The merchant alliance functions differently though
I don't think it would be difficult for Rare to either award rep on each animal captured (obviously only if they are required for the quest, for instance if you needed two gold pigs, you'd get rep for one, not two, even if you captured a second) OR add a 'voyage complete' sign when all the items/animals have been successfully collected. The bonus rep could then be awarded here.

Just to clarify this idea does primarily concern via PvP losses, however the benefits would also apply to being killed by any AI threat e.g. the kraken or any of the upcoming AI threats in the next few months.., or disconnecting, etc.

Any more problems with this idea I will write on here, and I intend to update this post frequently to make it as relevant as possible. If you disagree with this idea please feel free to voice your objection and reasons for it, perhaps proposing a different solution, or maybe you don't feel this is a problem at all. Any opinions welcome. Thanks.

Congratulations to @Hidrapond for finally officially becomin...

    What is False Flag?

False Flag is a fleet looking to recruit a moderately sized group of pirates to pillage and plunder in Sea of Thieves.

    What is False Flag's focus?

Our main focus at this time is simply on recruiting kind, like-minded individuals to join with us. Respect will be one of the most important aspects of the fleet, but we will also be putting focus on PvP/PvE content, as well as a handful of roleplaying as the game develops and allows for more roleplay scenarios, etc.

    Why should I join?

We plan on putting emphasis on the family/friends feeling. Our goal here is to not become so large that everyone seems a stranger, but rather keep the fleet on a relatively small scale so that every member knows one another and has a deeper connection with crewmates! To add to this question, however, our primary members have been playing Sea Of Thieves since the beginning and have much experience under our belt. We have no problem teaching new players the ropes and welcoming them to this wonderful world.

Are there any requirements to join?

Currently our only requirements be as follows:
***All new pirates who wish to join must post on this thread, making sure to tag me @Capta1n-Cr0ss or @Hidrapond in the post so that it alerts us via notification. Please state why you wish to join and tell us a little about yourself.
Must be 18 years of age or older
Have a working microphone [Some exceptions will be made if someone is really interested but cannot speak for good reason]
Respect every crew member, regardless of position or title
Always follow through with orders from the vessels Captain

I am interested, how do I join?

If you feel like False Flag would be a good fit for you, please leave a post on this thread giving some details about yourself and why you wish to join. Make sure to tag myself, @Capta1n-Cr0ss or @Hidrapond so that we are notified of your interest in joining. Once you've posted here, you will receive a link to the discord via the forum chat. Also, to save us a little time, please post the following in your reply:

    Gamertag:

    Age:

    Availability/Timezone:

    Platform:

Tells us a bit about you:

I've contacted someone about joining, now what?

In order to keep true to our ways and ensure each member is close, we will not be accepting every request to join. Once you've announced an interest in joining, we will take you on a trial run or two in-game to see how you click with the crew.

    Roles/Titles
    Greenie
    Pirate
    Bosun
    Quartermaster
    First Mate
    Captain

    Role Details
Greenie -- Also known as a 'Greenhorn'. These are members who have simply voiced an interest in joining the fleet, and as far as we know, have little-to-no experience on the ocean. These members must get in contact with myself [Capta1n Cr0ss] and sail with me in order to pass through this rank to a fully-fledged member, also known as 'Pirate' rank.

Pirate -- The meat and bones of the fleet. This is where the majority of our members will be in terms of rank. That's not to say you're not invaluable to the fleet, because you are. You're the men and women who will be crewing our vessels and ensuring all the work that's required aboard them and from your commanding officers gets done. Without you, there are no pirates. Without pirates, what the hell are we doing here?

Bosun -- also knows as 'Boatswain' .
This rank is filled by men and women with aspirations to become Quartermasters and higher. The bosun will always be ready to execute the orders of higher ranked officers as fast as possible, and will always communicate with the crew. The members of this role have shown that they are active members of the fleet, both in game and discord. To become a Bosun, a pirate who has proven themselves worthy, members must be nominated by a First mate or Captain. Currently this is the only rank that is decided by the votes of higher ranked members and mods.

Quartermaster -- This rank is generally reserved for members of the fleet who have proven their worth. These are the members who don't need to be told what to do most of the time. The ones who adjust the angle of the sails without being told, the ones who are always ready to drop anchor at a moments notice, and the ones who are always on the island clanking their shovels against that beloved booty. Quartermasters are selected by a Captain, from the Bosun ranked members; so it is a privilege to be bestowed this rank.

First Mate -- Similar to Quartermaster, but a step up. First Mate's are once again chosen by those of the 'Captain' role, and will become the right hand of said Captain. These fine lads and lasses are the ones you'll all be taking orders from when the ship Captain is MIA or not aboard the ship. The care of the ship falls into this roles hands at that moment, so should anything happen, know it is your responsibility. Here in False Flag we frown upon being sunk, so make sure that ship stays afloat at all times!

Captain -- The men and women who have proven their ability in all aspects of the game, but beyond that, have what it takes to command a vessel on the open ocean. This role is NOT for slackers of any kind. Falling into this role means being able to take control of any and all situations. Take care of your crew, take care of your ship - respect will follow, and your crew will follow you to the ends of the earth. Captains are only assigned by myself [Capta1n Cr0ss]. There is a current goal to have the Captain rank at 5 men or less. Once more Captains have come to their rank, a voting system will be created for the fleet. Each Captain will get a single vote in extremely important fleet matters, where the majority votes wins favour [rarely any exceptions]

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please leave a post here tagging myself or @Hidrapond. If you do not wish to post them here, then please feel free to message us privately! Thank you, and we'll see you on the seas!

Ok so this is getting a lot of attention and backlash and I can see why. I see the complaints and see how this can be unbalanced and in a way ruin part of the game. I have an idea of maxing out the Sloop at 3 that way it’s not too much but you can also have one extra person.

Edit: Can we possibly get this moved to become a mega thread? It’s blown up and this is a major game play change discussion.

Letting everyone know we've heard the feedback and the ...

An update has been announced in the Release Notes, Death Cost.

Death Cost - This new feature has the Captain of the Ferry of the Damned deduct a small gold fee when you die. Rates are dependant on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!

Please note, we never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience.

We understand that this addition to the release notes was a little confusing, and in the future we will ensure that any future updates we discuss give you a better understanding of how and why we're implementing it. Sea of Thieves is constantly evolving, and any feature we will test, monitor data and listen to your feedback to ensure we're making the right decisions.

As this is a hot topic which the community are very interested, we've decided to gather all your discussions, thoughts and concerns in one Mega Thread.

Letting everyone know we've heard the feedback and the proposed 'Death Cost' in #SeaOfThieves is, well, dead. We messed up with the messaging around this, and it's now gone. Thanks for the honest feedback & discussion on this. https://t.co/83pYg5HPbq

Locking this one now as we have a post from Mike Chapman and...

Barrel 2.0 - Barrels in the world have been upgraded and can now contain more than one kind of item. Barrels on ships will still remain single item barrels.

Barrels are such a hot topic in our community, so we're collating all the feedback in this megathread.

Senior Producer Drew has some additional information to explain this change.

@sonicbobjr said in [Mega Thread] Barrel 2.0:

    Hey Everyone,

With Patch 1.2.4 along with our new Cursed Crews Adventure, the Return of Skeleton Ships to the seas and a raft of other updates - we’ve introduced our new Barrel and Inventory system out into players hands.

The improved Barrel system gives us much more flexibility in delivering a range of resources to players. Previously a Barrel found out in the world was locked to a specific resource type (Banana’s for example), however in the new system this Barrel can contain a range of different items. Right now expect to find Barrels holding Bananas, Planks, Cannonballs & Cursed Cannonballs – but will allow us to easily extend this to more items and resource types in upcoming updates.

We’ve seen the feedback from Pioneers and now with the wider playerbase that this new system does take a little longer to stock your ship, we’re monitoring this closely and will be balancing and tweaking the quantity of resources found in Barrels to account for the slight delay in future updates. We’re confident that we can strike the right balance here – but we will continue to review this new system over time and make changes to improve the experience as needed.

With the introduction of our Barrel & Inventory systems alongside players gaining Cursed Cannonballs for the first time, we know this is a sizeable change to PVP in Sea of Thieves. We’re reviewing how these encounters change with the introductions of these new systems and making improvements from player feedback.

We know that these are some fundamental changes to core systems players use every session, but this sets us up well for some of our exciting new updates coming down the line that are going to require players to have plenty more storage space!

Thanks for all the passionate feedback on this, we’re watching the feedback closely on these new introductions.

Mike has also added a post explaining the changes -

Handyman: Aye! Stay on ship to repair and help the Helmsman.
Anti-boarder: Defendin' the ladder and protectin' the ship and her crew.
Grenadier: Ye be mannin’ the cannons! In charge of cursed cannonballs.
Crew: Play any role on the ship that isn’t filled!

    Note:
Rank structure is enforced - Seniority over the crew will be based on rank. Rank is earned through leadership ability and skill. If you're new or desire to be among the best these seas have to offer, our officers will take care of you and teach you all they know.

    Rank Structure

Sailor - everybody starts of as a Sailor and if you want you can get promoted to First mate. this will require at least 4 other sailors to vote you up.

First Mate - Yar! First Mates are trusted by the crew to man the helm during basic naval combat and pillages. In addition to assume seniority over lower-enlisted. If accompanied by the Captain, they will serve as second in command. First Mates are given access to the #officer-chat on our discord to discuss the logistics, conflict, and promotions within our fleet. If multiple First Mates are boarded on one vessel, time in grade will determine which First Mate has seniority or amongst themselves.

Captain - Captains have proved worthy of naval combat in our crew. They may propose promotions and demotions which causes an issue to be posted in our officer chat. When a democratic order is approved by a Rear Admiral or higher, Captains may also vote on the issue. If a Rear Admiral is present, they will serve as second in command.

Rear Admiral - Rear Admirals are among the most experienced in our fleet. This is second-highest rank a member can have in our crew. They can assign rank (up to first mate) without requiring the Admiral’s approval and vote on issues in an oligarchic order. They will be in charge of coordinating multiple vessels to approach one objective if present on the same server. Unlike lower ranking members of the crew, Rear Admirals can expel or demote anyone of lower rank. Rear admirals may flag other crews for war without the approval of the Admiral.

SoT Officer - SoT Officers answer directly to the SoT Leader (Admiral). SoT Officers have all the capabilities of the Admiral and work as their right hand to complete community tasks and moderate discord channels.

SoT Leader (Admiral) - Admiral is the highest rank a member can have in our crew. Admirals generally have either started the crew or were a former SoT Officer promoted by the previous Admiral. The Admiral has the power to demote and promote anyone in an autocratic order, change the crew articles, and assign titles to anyone, including themselves. The Admiral leads the SoT Officers to carry out community development.

Applies to all Officers - When in charge of a vessel, they will be responsible for supplies, completing the mission, and whether ye walk the plank for tearing the whole crew apart! (of course, we'll swoop ye back up if ye survive swimming amongst the sharks)

    Our Commitment

If you'd like to get to know us and what we're about, join our Discord:

You must go through all of our steps to board the tactical fleet. We pride ourselves in having exceptional players, dedicated to sharing their knowledge and experience with all of our members. Alas, as with all good things - we must bring the Technical Alpha to a close. Your feedback and the data you've generated in the past year of testing has helped get Sea of Thieves ship-shape. To thank you for your help during this stage in development, we’ve granted you the title of Founder!

    BEING A FOUNDER

So what does being a Founder mean? Well other than sounding incredibly fancy you get:

    • Guaranteed access to the Closed Beta in 2018 so you can continue your swashbuckling ways!
    • A brand new forum badge to show your fellow pirates you’re not to be trifled with.

With the end of the Technical Alpha means we’re going to be doing some general housekeeping in the Forums, there will be categories that merge, some that have become read only and categories that have disappeared. Our goal in this is to open up the forums to use as we noticed that some categories (Technical Alpha and Insider) were used disproportionately more than others.

We’ll be back in 2018 with information on the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta and even more sneak peeks for what’s coming in Sea of Thieves, so stay tuned!
