When opening a barrel, assume I want to take it's contents. Obviously.

  • You can reasonably assume that I never want to put all my inventory into a barrel when I hold the interact key. To make looting during fights and for supplies in general, faster and more smooth, always assume that when I open a container it's because I want what's inside it, not because I want to dump all of my stuff.
Have the container that I open selected by default, and have my mouse over it when I open it so that I don't accidentally dump all my stuff in a barrel during a fight.

This is a PC problem, obviously, but it's actually awful, and has ruined several pvp, and pve fights for me, not only because of the game selecting the wrong inventory when I open a barrel, but because I have to stop mid fight to do risk assessment on grabbing a health item that I know I can grab in less than a second if the game works right.

Devs, PLEASE get this fixed ASAP, especially if you really wanna go down this whole arena route.

  • On xbox. Go up to barrel mash button to open mash button to take mash button to close move to next barrel. -sorry I forgot buttons on xbox

On pc. Mash f to access barrel keep mashing f to take all mash x to exit. Move to next barrel.

Is this not already good enough?

  • I also choose to use my mouse to transfer over bananas, planks and cannonballs from my inv to the barrels. As this is easier then using the mapped buttons imo. Just gotta do what works best for you.

The problem is that the barrel UI has mouse activation, which can cause the wrong side to be active when the barrel opens and you end up putting stuff into the barrel instead.

Remove the hover activation or re-center the mouse (like they do for the map / item wheels) and it would work the way its supposed to.

I'm on pc and I haven't had this happen to me personally.
But I do understand what you're saying.
Are you sure it's not just remembering the last part of a barrel you accessed?

Example. You have full supplies you dump supplies into barrels on your ship. You then go to a new barrel and it pulls up the side of your items not the barrels items. Sounds like this is what's happening but at random times for you. Must be a bug. I haven't experienced this.

  • @vderickv no, it's not remembering the side - its not reseting the mouse cursor position. Some screens do, and some don't - that is the problem.

You can test this by using the Q or E key to bring up the wheels; the mouse will be centered. Now bring up the tab screen and browse bilge rat stuff. Exit this screen without moving mouse (esc). Press escape to bring up the crew /settings menu. These two don't reset cursor position. Access a barrel - the cursor will be in the previous location.

Depending on where the cursor is when this happens, you can end up having the wrong barrel side selected. In some cases, after repeated usage of these menus, sometimes your cursor can work its way up to the top of the window and activates the app bar which can also cause you to accidentally close the game completely (it doesn't prompt to confirm either).

Its an inconsistent user interface design, and it should be fixed.

I went in game and tested this and as much as I see how it could be an issue in the instance that you stated. It almost seems like it's made that way for QOL around pc users and selection of cursed balls. At least for tab button. Not sure I'd want them to fix this. As it's only an issue in a random incident of you leaving your cursor where it shouldn't be. User error.

  • @vderickv it's an inconsistency problem, not user error. The game expects you to move the mouse around to look, which behaves similar to a centered cursor. Accessing the wheels will center the cursor. Opening menus will not center and somehow expects you to know where your (invisible) cursor was previously pointing?

If the cursor just centered itself on screen whenever it became visible, there would be no problem. The user experience would be consistent across all instances of cursor usage and you'd know what to expect.

  • @d3adst1ck
After looking at it I kinda expect it to act the way it already does.
While on a cannon press tab select a curse ball. Load it press tab again it's on the same ball.
I'd be okay if they updated it to be centered everytime. But I do like the way it is currently.

  • Honestly, it USED to be a different button to put and another button to take. F would take, and R would put. I am sure that in the barrel interface there could be two buttons mapped for keyboard and controller... I don't know why they decided to cram it all into a single-button but I have hated it from day one.

Go back to F to take and R to put and the controller equivalent and the problem goes away.

  • @vderickv On a cannon, hold Q - there is a separate cannon-only item wheel for all cannonballs and the cursor centers on it like the other wheels.

The problem is situational. Using a cannon is not the same as when you are trying to interact with the menus quickly while running through a ship. On a cannon, you are stationary so your mouse does not move as often or as quickly as it does when running around.

When moving through a ship, you could turn right to look at a banana barrel. When you open the barrel you are expecting the cursor to be where you looked, but it could be at the top, bottom, left or right of this window based on where you last had it in the last menu you opened (barrel or not) which could have been several minutes ago.

If you open a barrel, it should 100% of the time have the same expected functionality. There are a lot of cases where this doesn't happen. If the barrel menu remembered the last position you had your cursor in the barrel menu only that would be better than what currently happens because it would be consistent. If it was centered, it would be better than what we currently get. If they removed the hover activation of the barrel sides it would be better than what we currently get.
