Moron muggers

  • So I'm playing with a buddy right? I have to ask about the lvl of folks who roll around sinking ships at random. Usually when I'm on the prowl for folks to rob. I drop on em kill them scope em out and leave if they have nothing. Lately ive had Brigs and galleons roll up on our sloop send us to the ferry and then get mad at us for being like "dude we got no loot." Got called several (redacted) names a few times for this and sunk for what seems out of spite or killed out of spite. Is this a common thing with folks like that? a bunch of random trolls or "Moron Muggers" as our group has taken to calling them. Cause if so. They seriously need to learn how to identify targets better for robbing.

  • @prongedbadger16 yeah they probably just want your supplies. Not that I would do that or anything also if you have a rowboat that would be even more a reason for someone to do that to you should just let them take it they probably won't sink you

  • So they tried to sink you without so much as scoping out the job?

    These are low budget thieves.

These are the sort of opportunistic predators who would rob the phone from your hand on the street and just hope that they could either run or beat you in a fight.

Nothing wrong with that sort of thief, but they're never going to get to the top echelons of criminality with that sort of lack of vision and ambition.

    Maybe they were new?

  • I risked solo slooping into an outpost the other day knowing another sloop was in the vicinity. I quickly cashed out before the two came rolling in but they managed to land a few rounds as I dropped the sails to get away. One says, "Sorry, we need the practice". Shooting at a parked sloop I thought? Go fight a skelly ship. I circled back to oblige them. They still need more practice :)

  • I solo sloop a lot for fun and I always expect I'm going to be attacked at some point. However, I always figure people keep an eye out for my activities before they attack. At least it was that way when I first started out solo sloop.

Now it just seems like I get attacked for no reason. I had a couple of lads the other day on hotmic saying things like "Hey, we're going to attack you" and I just let them. I didn't have a mission or anything quite yet. Then, the next day, I was attacked while docked. They didn't bother to search the island I was on, nor did they bother to search the ship. They just shot it up and sunk it and went on their way.

  • When I get robbed from my treasure and sunk, mostly I try to do the rest of the quest (unless I've spawned close). If on the other hand they sink my ship with nothing on it, I can't help myself to cross the whole map if needed and say 'Hi' with some cannonballs or trying to get on their ship for some fun/ get their loot.

  • We (the crew I play with) engage everyone we see. We like the PVP aspect added in while we are working on voyages. Even if you don't have loot, you will have some supplies. It's fun. It's exciting. You win some. You lose some. I don't think that makes anyone a moron for wanting to have fun battles.

Also, if you (not you specifically, but everyone in general) don't want to have fights, don't ever be near other ships.

  • @dislex-fx My crew does this as well. My favorite part about Sea of Thieves is sailing a ship as a crew and not being the ship itself, like say in Black Flag. As such we like to experience this bit of gameplay as much as we can and thus we engage EVERYONE. Worse case scenario we board, steal all their supplies, and move on. It's not always about the loot.

  • Well it's popular for low-levels to attack smaller ships, i usually get attacked by them even when im alone.
When im with a friends i tend to humiliate them by sinking them and jumping around like a rabbit on their ship.
Or when i solosloop (when doing merchant commendations) i just laugh and run away basically.
They can't aim for sheit and they rarely board and if they board they grab a coop and thinks: ha-ha treasure - 🤣
They are fun to sink and kill though (in defence) because they don't know what to do amd even if you try to talk to them...they are always aggressive.

  • I wouldn't call them "Morons" … while sure there are a few ways to somewhat ensure that your Target has "Loot" on-board., unless they're laden with High Value Skulls (which are light freaking Night Beacons) there's no real way to tell what (if any) Booty they have on-board.

And "Stalking Prey" I'd argue is pointless, because you essentially are just waiting for them to Complete all the work; when within the same Time Frame you could've completed your own Voyages.

About the only time it makes sense is if you KNOW said Crew is working on a Big Haul (say a Fort / Fleet) that you can then swoop in last minute to Raid from them.

I'd argue that the game need more visual clues as to IF a Ship currently has any Haul (of note)., as well, here's the thing once you engage / commit you've already sunk time in that if there is now pay off is going to make you a little salty.

The only thing you can always be guaranteed that a ship will have is Supplies of some description (unless they've just set off) … but even then it remains a stupid design that Supplies are acquired via Random Crates / Barrels as opposed to being Purchasable at Outposts, or limited to Shipwrecks.

Where-as Loot (Skulls, Goods and/or Chests) should I'd argue have two visual cues of a Lower Displacement., i.e. the Ship Rides Lower and is Slightly Slower / More Draggy the more Loot you have.
And have a "Gleam" or "Sheen" effect that goes across the Hull every so often (being Brighter and more Noticeable again the Greater the Loot on-board)… adding to the Risk Vs. Reward Element of Big Vs. Small Hauls.

As doing Multiple Voyages at once is typically more Time Efficient, thus better Gold and Rep / Hr … but Short Singular Voyages is Safer and more Consistent, especially with various Marauding Crews; which in my experience most aren't even after the Loot, they just want to PvP, because "Reasons".

Seems a bit pointless to me given there's no K/D Statistics, No Leaderboard / Glory to be Had, oft very little Challenge in fighting someone who doesn't want to / incapable of Fighting Back, etc. but eh,. I don't operate on a NBSI but instead a NRLI Policy.
There are a few exceptions, such-as Forts and Fleets; as that's part of the Risk Vs. Reward of them.

Still, beyond this I dunno it's an element of the game I've always felt was just seriously under-developed... like it's a Pirate Game., so you know you WANT (if only on occasion) to actually bloody pirate; and sure during the Gilded Voyage Period, then it was arguably good for engaging in such., but then eh then again personally because it's a "Single Time" Voyage that said people can't get back … that just seemed a bit "Extra" Cruel, as opposed to more Light Hearted "Argh! We be Pirating"

I mean it's basically Disney Pirates... not Somali Pirates.
In fact I find it a bit curious that Rare has a habit of not only supporting such behaviour but tagging it within their Social Media to be like "Hey look at what kind of Players we have!"

Just seems a bit Cruel and Malicious to me, as opposed to people just having fun "Playing" the Bad Guys., instead to actually behaving Heartless.
