Would a Marine faction work?

  • How about there being some sort of a law enforcement in the game because as it's shown in the Pirate's of the Caribbean movies there are 2 things that i think is the foundation of it all. The whole stealing from other pirates and running or stealing from the Royal Navy or Marines. The comparison i have in my head is similar to the Pirate Anime series One piece's Marine faction there. Imagine lively town's like Tortuga or Port Royal where Npc's live and can get raided or captured and then ransomed back etc. The wild's seem to be the area where Tortuga like town's can be placed like the ones already there but with alot more thing's to interact with, like a fencer where you sell your loot. It's still a sea of thieves but i think there can be a marine faction player's can join and hunt pirates.

I'll stop here before i write even more and i think this is enough to explain my Suggestion for New Content. Breathe some life into Sea of Thieves.

  • I think that it could work, but in my opinion it would have to be wholly separate system from the current trade company set up.
In fact I'd it should be separate to the point of making a completely different character. I propose the following-

Upon starting the game you are given the option to select your vessels like normal; sloop, galleon, etc, but there would be a separate option to log in as a Navy character. If it is your first time you'd be make a different character from your first, perhaps with tweaks to the Infinite Pirate Generator to generate slightly more clean-cut and professional looking characters. Upon loading in you would find yourself at a dock at some civilized port, where you could gather your crew (larger than 4) and select your mission. To encourage these voyages to be quick, you would have a time limit before similar to merchant missions.
There could be some degree of variance, such as sinking X ships or capturing X Pirates alive, but generally the jist is Navy VS Pirate.

Once you're ready to set sail you'd spawn in with your crew on a large ship unique to the Navy faction, such as a Man-of-War, at the edge of the map and the timer would start. After you have completed your mission you would "turn in" by sailing off the edge of the map. It's worth mentioning that Navy ships would not experience the Red Sea effect while sailing on the edge, there would be some sort of notification or prompt they were leaving the Sea and if they continued the crew would de-spawn, and the boat would continue to path forward until it lost visual range.

An asymmetrical PvP system is not unheard of in games, and a threat such as a massive Navy ship would certainly incourage pirates to work together to sink it.

    Random thoughts:

    • To ensure the sea is not full of Navy ships, you could only have one per server.
    • Navy crew size would be significantly larger, perhaps a cap of 8.
    • Navy players/ship would de-spawn after mission timer expired.
    • To cut down on the number of Navy players, you'd have to reach a certain level with all trade companies before you could play one. This would also (somewhat) ensure only experienced sailors could crew a Navy ship.
    • Naval character cosmetics would be separate from your main character, with additional outfits being purchaseable upon completing missions. Obviously these cosmetics would be less diverse than what a pirate has access to.
    • On the pirate side, sinking a Navy vessel should give some reward.

Obviously alot of these concepts would have to be fine-tuned or adjusted but, this is just my two cents.

  • @jacqui-o-blades Here's an additional view point.
Imagine you're sailing the sea's doing your Pirate Voyage's and you're on your way to cash in your loot.

Either at the port you're going to or enroute to it you encounter a marine patrol on the island or a patrol ship docked by the pier or sailing near the island.

They spot you and if they witness you sell the loot or you fail they're questioning or if they notice your Jolly Roger Flag they'll try and put you in their brig and to their marine fort one being in each of the four corners of the map.

You try to escape and a sort of bounty meter shows up sort of like a taxi meter the longer you escape the more you're bounty will be worth, any additional damage done to the marine ship or marine personnel (the marine's are NPC's btw) add's onto the Bounty Meter.

You escape pursuit by outsailing them or destroying them.

Imagine after escaping you arrive at a port with no patrols finally and you cash in your loot then you go for a drink at the tavern.

Inside the tavern you notice a bounty board with bounty posters on it and you see a bounty poster of you, somehow in the middle of fighting or running from the Navy or Marine's your picture got taken somehow.

The bounty poster has your picture, the amount you're worth for killing or bringing in alive, you're title is on it and it says to which marine fort base you can deliver to if captured and finally some snide comment from the marine officer who posted it. :)

Ontop of the Crow's nest you need to present a white flag when approaching the Marine fort so they won't open fire at you.

You dock at their pier and proceed to deliver the corpse or alive person to them.

Sort of like when you deliver loot the person just disappears and you get the bounty money and from the captured player's point of view he's in a brig inside the marine base.

He can escape through his own effort's in some way or he can have help from crew members or something.

How to make sense of the rest would take alot more to write onto here, i think it's clear what my intention is though so i'll stop here.

I hope this idea is ok. :)
