A new in game item that allows us to speak to other pirates who are far away

    A new instrument

A new Flag mechanic and cosmetics to go with it

    A new boss to fight

    New Skins

That seems like a reasonable "medium" update. Maybe im optimistic. As for your brother, its rare's fault he decided to skip the quests and go right for the boss? What should they make it a requirement to have to go through all the steps first? Kinda defeats the purpose of a "choose your own adventure" game.

And you think mermaids would have been better then the meg? If thats your opinion so be it, but I disagree. We already have a basic enemy that attacks us in the water. I'd much rather have a new boss fight.

Sorry this update wasn't all you hoped it would be, but I gotta disagree, I had alot of fun these past few days. For the first time there is an actual reason to work with other crews, and I've noticed the seas feel alot friendlier because of that.

    Boooooo!

  • @triheadedmonkey

Y'all are really reading into that the wrong way. He finished the content in 45 minutes because he happened to be in the area. He didnt cheese anything it was how the game was designed. He got all the other stuff afterwards, but he was able to experience the entirety of their "medium sized update" in such a small amount of time. That's the worst part.

Even while hunting the clues it only took me an hour or so. They werent particularly hard to figure out. "Double Tree? I'm terrible at remembering names" As soon as I scrolled over Twin Groves i knew that had to be it. Not to mention I found Merrick's ship well before the content was released and the chick in the third tavern chick straight up just says "West of Shark Tooth Cay."

Everyone here desparately needs to get over themselves. "1v1 me bro" from one guy, "uninstall and get out" from another. What makes your opinions of the game so much more valid than mine? Why are you so special?

Ahh yes, the skeletons sitting on chairs on top of mountains we have to shoot ourselves at. Mountains I've already been on top of a dozen times because I have a natural desire to explore even though this game offers nothing to actually discover. Oh how I can't wait for that spectacle and it's ilk.

Why is making money in the game more important than having fun playing the game?

thats due to the fact that modern trash games have conditioned us to feel joy or pleasure from seeing our own stats go up. its no longer about having a fun or good time. its about seeing a number go up

Did you not notice the numbers that go up in this game? The difference is the other games found ways of making that number much more enjoyable to watch.

My guess is the new item that will come with that weekly event will be a selfie stick so you can take good photos while sitting in those thrones.

  • One artist and one programmer could literally put this "update" together in a week's time. Reskin a shark with some extra fancy fins, make it bigger with more HP, and have it circle the ship and bite it randomly. This kind of thing should be coming out every other week for it to be worth it, not every 2+ months.

Long range voice trumpet? That's not anything new, that's just improving a mechanic already in the game, voice chat (adding range).

Drums? You already have the mechanics for instruments, you just needed the art and the sounds added.

Flag mechanics? That's cool, but not anything to go crazy over, and very simplistic.

New cosmetics? Great, but don't care.

If there are more than a dozen people working at Rare, then this is a scam.

  • @subaqueousreach I am in the same boat...

Many apologies. I actually wasn't really trying to come down on you, just reading a lot of "this game has no content" posts, so I respond in kind. I think the OP and others of his kind just keep over reacting. It's a game.

  • On the topic of reward, I think it would be both rewarding and realistic if the body of the shark would stay floating long enough to cut it open with a cutlass to find random loot in its belly. Surely this monster has swallowed some loot while taking bites out of all those ships? This would provide some degree of monetary reward, along with an extra degree of immersion, plus one final risk (coping with any remaining sharks in the area). Win-win.

I love how excited so many were. All I saw on the forums how hungering deep and so many excited. Turns out it’s an hour of content and the best thing to happen for people who like to troll the quest giver. Good job rare

I think measuring content by the amount of time it takes to do is the wrong way to look at this game. It depends on what the shark and new tools/flags bring to the core game loop later on.. will players use the flags to signal what their intent is? Will they have a common meaning later on? etc etc.

Some people that need a sense of pride and accomplishment in games because they don't get it elsewhere. It's one of the first entertainment activities that people demand "reasons" for doing things and "rewards" so their "time isn't wasted".

Where something like chess has been around for 1500 years and people can play thousands of games and not complain that someone didn't hand them a gold star. If you're really good you might start playing competitively. But somehow games have gotten it backward. It's not about whether or not you enjoy playing the game, it's about whether or not it rewards your time like working for a trucking company would pay you for your time. Once you're rewarded you have an incentive to get good!

  • @twiztedkarrtoon Please refrain from name calling and being disrespectful towards other users, as it is against the Pirate Code.

  • Sad but true. I had the same standpoint but since I watch the vids before the update I already knew it was going to be brief and underwhelming. For those who are saying this is a good start of things to come this is basically it. If you see how much emphasis Rare is putting on this you would know they’re trying to blow it up as a revolutionary update. I’m not being pessimistic and I’m still hopeful that it will reach it’s full potential but there’s only so much us gamers can take before we move on to promising new titles.

  • It was a little underwhelming. 2 months To create a skin for a new boss and add 3 readable items. I've been waiting for the past few days at the cove. Both times I've been able to talk to one person while the other 2 weren't responding, or didn't have the drum. My honest opinion is that Microsoft forced rare to drop this exclusive and rare wasn't finished. They messed up the THD TCS and TFS we all supposed to be part of the entire game. But it wasn't released in time. Rare also has a track record of abandoning games

  • @subaqueousreach clearly you dont like the style SoT has towards questing it might get better for you in the future but hell you get quite alot in this update:

    • Sharkhunter ship parts
    • megalodon figurehead
    • Drum
    • speaking trumpet
    • customizable tattoos
    • Scars
    • a full new AI threat that will stay in the game
    • some more clothes

Yeah it wasnt a huge campaign and no it didnt take all that long to complete and there are issues with it, like basicly having no replay value after you have slain the beast (which not all people need but would be nice)

However they had to Model and skin the beast and items they added in the past 2 months! Thats all the time they had.

  • I'd just like to point out that your brother can't get the horn, drum, tattoo, or "shark hunter" title without 1st going through those initial steps that he skipped (but he still gets the scar, the figurehead, and the "shark slayer" title for beating Meg)...

  • @subaqueousreach Your statement is complete and utter nonsense!!

The last cosmetics patch? Added a handful of new outfits.

This update has added the most content there has been on this game yet!

    A New World Threat.
    New Instrument (Drum)
    New Tool (Speaking Trumpet)
    A few revised clothing items
    A new Hull
    5-6 New sails
2 new figure heads (1 being exclusive)
    New flag system
    New Shanty
    New Scars
    Whole load of tattoo sets

So where exactly is the evidence to back up your origonal statement? Oh yes it's lurking in the depths of Davy Jones' locker.

Do the community a favour and dont even return for Cursed Sails. Im sure you will find something else to moan about and it will be the exact same nonsense and this.

So a bunch of stuff that probably should have been in the game already according to a lot of people and a bigger shark. -

    • The tattoos and scars are all the ones we got in the RNG carousel except for the 3 sets you can purchase
    • The new sails are just 5 recolors of the basic sail
    • The shark hunter ship set was in the beta and they took it out for launch, then re-released it as this big deal for THD
    • The new shanty is solely for the event and will disappear (it's also a terrible shanty)
    • The speaking trumpet literally just increases the distance at which we can shout at one another. It's not that innovative.
    • The drum is nice, but a new instrument to play in the downtime doesn't change the fact that there is still excessive amounts of downtime.
    • The flags are currently broken. I can't purchase them at any shop except for the Shark Hunter flag and my basic white flag is non-existent.

So the only thing they actually added to the game that isn't reusing assests that were already in the game since beta is the Megalodon who is surprisingly less intimidating than the Kraken.

Not to mention this patch broke "washed up items" so they actually had to remove content in order to bring this stuff into the game because they can't figure out their own code.

At least the last cosmetics patch was honest about how much was coming to the game and only added new things without taking anything away. This was boasted to be a medium sized patch with a bunch of new content. We got a single, hour long quest line that most people are already finished with, a megaphone and a drum. And the quest is going to be taken out in a week or so.

  • @subaqueousreach I can tell that you're 1 of those types that needs direction and instant gratification here and now. Which is too bad, bc SoT is 1 of those games where you make your own fun (I know I've had many an adventure and stories to tell). Those of us who enjoy the game are the ones who could be given a stick, and said stick all of a sudden becomes a sword, a gun, a wand, a sand-pencil, water-finder, a crutch, a walking stick, etc. You'd just look at the person handing it to you and would ask, "what am I supposed to do with a stick."

    No imagination... SMH 😑

The thing that made me upset about the DLC is the hype... WHY HYPE IT UP IF YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS? If this was just a weekly patch I would happy. I wouldn't complain. But for an NPC shark Rare does a marketing campaign.... why?

It's like how on minekraft when they added the ability to hold a map in one hand and a tool in the other. They just added it! There was no title or hype! If it was Rare they would of put out a HD trailer and called it somthing like "The Hungry Hand"

Why waste resources on hyping it up instead of putting the money towards development?

  • @stubbierbell598 Because without the hype, there is no money for development. You also have to remember that MC is an established beast worth billions (not to mention, paid DLC). SoT, on the other hand, not so much...

Oii but Rare or MC paid a pretty penny for all the marketing done for THD...They both knew that 50% at least of the content in it was recycled content and the other half was a short mission.

If SoT charged users for the update I would understand the hype (get users to spend money on it) but it was free. So the only money to be had is new users. Many of which more than likely already tried the game via game pass and decided it wasn't for them.

So knowing that THD content didn't change the game much why try this???? I question the marketing....where is the revenue going to come from? Are they just hoping THD is enough to bring in users who originally passed on the game?

  • @savagetwinky Chess badly lacks content. I mean, one single map, for 1500 years. Really?
Have you seen their forums? On top of that they have a serious bot issue.

I wouldn't pay $60 to play chess if it was the last game on the planet. If I knew what SoT was before purchasing, I wouldn't have paid more than $15.

  • It’s a great step towards showing the community what’s to come.

I actually think it’s helpful and fun to team with other ships It’s a grind. Stop and have some fun friends

  • you aren't even taken into account the little time frame they had for this DLC, they had all the game issues to fix then the DLC to work on. Yeah its not the best but its good for the time frame, compared to the other DLCS

  • @subaqueousreach Please refrain from using derogatory language and name calling, as it is against the forum rules.

  • @iduskk the game doesn't even tell you how to use the trumpet. How do you explain that?

  • @ve111a to call the great is subjective, but you cannot deny that this was not very user friendly.

  • @galactic-geek So, you enjoy sandbox games because that is what SoT is. However, in normal sandbox games, you have more toys at your disposal to make the time you spend in the sandbox a little more "Unique." People have somewhat run out of ideas for SoT and have resorted to doing social experiments "Banana challenge." So yeah...I think the notice of lack of content or direction is justified. Could just be me, but as I recall a wide majority if not most of them entirely were speaking of the same problem in reviews and videos ~Shrugs.~ Will the game be amazing in a year's time? Possibly, will it have the same amount of players it had at launch? Quite doubtful.

A lot of people pay way more than $60 to play chess. Have you seen some of the chess boards available? Some are worth hundreds. Plus, computer chess games have been around since the dawn of computers, and some have been quite expensive. Some are even subscription based. The point being...people are willing to pay for the games they enjoy playing. I think Sea of Thieves is worth ever penny of $60, and that’s for its visual beauty alone. When you consider the hours of gameplay you get out of SoT, $60 is a pretty amazing entertainment value. You can spend more than that going to the movies. It’s all a matter of perspective.

On this point I can agree in a general sense - it amazes me that many games release with barely anything at launch, or with obvious issues, and still expect to somehow be successful or win back their jaded audience. Once reviews are out, and word-of-mouth spreads, that's pretty much it. After that, if you try to explain why a particular game is good, or has become better over time, you'll usually get a response that sounds like, "yeah, but I heard that..."

  • @galactic-geek said:

You must lack imagination if you're critiquing the games lack of content.

That's a very unimaginative response to a perfectly valid critiquing of the game. Next time perhaps try and turn that stick into a real argument.
