From the Pirates that love the game to the Developers

  • Here are some more ways to improve the game and our gaming experience. If you like these ideas make sure to UpVote this thread along with others you like And if you want to help Me make a consecutive list share your ideas below. I'll make sure you are credited beside your idea on the list. The list is going to be split into a few categories.
Pre-game: Anything before getting into a server with a crew to do voyages with.
In-game: Everything from items, treasure, enemies, to islands.
Additional: Anything that doesn't fit into the other two sections. No matter if it's an event idea, rewards, penalties, or something that needs to be addressed altogether.

    -- Pre-Game --
I think the main menu needs an overhaul.

UPDATES - Adding a section where you can view all updates and when updates will happen in the game along with events would be a big welcomed change.

COSMETIC CHANGES - Being able to change your skins for your character, your ship, your weapons, and your items before you get in the game will also be a very welcomed idea.

MENU ISLAND - I was thinking about changing the menu to look more like a treasure map but of an island outpost. Seems like a fun and interesting idea and I know Rare loves fun ideas.

MORE CHARACTERS - Let us have more than one pirate and get rid of the random pirate generator. Let us fully customize our characters how we want them at the start of the game.

TUTORIAL ISLAND - Give new players a small island before getting into a server that runs a player through the basics of the game. Let it be optional on if someone wants to play the tutorial before getting onto the tutorial island.

THE ANSWER TO SAFE ZONES - I updated WizO Paradox original idea a bit. Crew Recruitment Island, The Sea of Thieves personal Tortuga. A No PVP area that allows a massive amount of people get on an outpost buy things with their gold, change cosmetics, and recruit other players for their crew. It would be an isolated island and when you build your crew and you go the where a ship is normally docked to find a rowboat that you have to click on to enter into a server. There could be an LFG "table" that could work similar to voting for voyages. You can post what your main goals are voyages for a certain alliance or forts or just having fun. There are no resource/quests on this island. Just a tavern for recruitment and shops to spend gold.

SHIP ROLE VOTING - Add the ability to vote for Captain before you get into the game along with ship roles. Whoever is the captain, that's whose cosmetic you use for your Ship along with ship name. They don't get more gold, their vote doesn't count for more, and they are not more important. You can have an option to change who's captain and when you Scuttle the ship or when your ship sinks whoever's the new captain their ship cosmetics are the new cosmetics. But I think allowing people to have and assign ship roles to each other giving them nothing more than a title of "Captain of the (ship name goes here)" or "Navigator of the (ship name goes here)" displayed under your Gamertag would be nice.

    -- In-Game --
The In-Game section is going to be broken down into a few different sections. Game features, combat, items (including treasure), and Islands.

    • Game features

    Alliance idea:

Cartographers. Missions to explore certain vistas on islands. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Biologists. Missions to gather flora and fauna. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Cartography - the ability to mark things on your map like Uncharted Islands or just giant things of rock.

Mini games- Speaking of mini-games lets add rock-paper-scissors. Being able to see the animations and the way people react or even using it to figure out who's going to go on land or who's going to stay on the ship. I think adding rock-paper-scissors to the game would be amazing.

Interior changes - Being able to change the Cosmetic looks of the interior of your ship like the map table, the way your barrels look, and the boxes that hold your guns, ammunition, and other cosmetic items. You could change the interior color scheme of your ship.

A use for the brig when sailing alone. - As the game is now if your sailing alone the brig is nothing but a waste of space. So why not allow solo players the ability to place something in the brig in the place of a crew mate? If you are paying alone you could place one or all of your items in the brig for safe keeping while your either selling your goods or stealing those goods. Out of fairness, you could make it so that other player could blow the brig open with either enough shot with a gun or with a gunpowder barrel. Finally to add a reason to not use it, have anything that is locked in the brig be sunk to the bottom of the sea (aka deleted) once the ship is sunk. Suggested by King Jeff Ahh.

Let us rebuy cages -"Please let us rebuy cages for active merchant quests. It's really frustrating when you load the cages on your ship and some d****e came by and sinks it. On any other voyage, I can go on with a new ship. But I basically have to cancel the merchant one.
To prevent abuse let us only buy cages for animals we didn't already catch for the quest. So nobody can steal stuff over and over again." suggested by Maximus1978

FEEDING THE PIGS - Remove that all together nobody enjoys it or likes it. Rare added a babysitting element to the game that everyone hates. It wastes resources and time, someone is always stuck on a ship doing it, and the pig disappears if you don't. I don't understand why Rare added it in but nobody actually enjoys wasting time feeding the pigs and the fact they disappear if you don't. Suggested by SARACENS LAMENT.

Signal flags - you can raise to show your intentions. Of course, these could be used with other intentions then the flag shows, but that's part of the fun. Suggested by MorbidSS.

    Ship mechanics:

Slightly increase water intake on galleons to give a sloop crew a fighting chance. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Let a sunken ship spawn resources like the barrels we find at sea. Suggested by MorbidSS.

    Character improvements:

Ability to throw a chest/item about a meter in front of you. Easier to clear ship railings and ledges! Could be done by holding the drop-button.
More emotes. Could be buyable. Suggested by MorbidSS.

The ability to give gold to crewmates. Suggested by MorbidSS.

    • COMBAT

Ammo box location - crow's nest - suggested by Emperor TGills

Sails - The ability to Damage Sails and Repair sails.

Fire - oils that can catch a ship on fire that force you to get water on your ship.

Chainshot - to shoot sails with to slow ships down (could be a short temporary slowdown). Suggested by MorbidSS.

J*******h- - in schools that occasionally swarm shipwrecks. Could have the same poison mechanic as snakes. Suggested by MorbidSS.

A giant tortoise - with an island on its back that slowly moves around the sea. I read this idea on the forum somewhere and I thought this is really awesome. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Random hostile creatures - on islands, like jaguars or hostile cannibal tribes with big masks and spears. Suggested by MorbidSS.

    • ITEMS

Spawn chests or valuables at the hidden caves found throughout the game. Exploring these is fun but to find out there's absolutely nothing there kinda sucks. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Ship customization items can be found in shipwrecks. This should be a rare item spawn. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Floating barrels could occasionally contain a valuable object. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Pet suggestion - Raven suggested by NMD0508

Crowbar - A crowbar is a tool that could peel planks of wood off the ship.

Mystic and cursed items - Adding items that have a wide variety of effects from affecting you or your ship in a positive way like slowly repairing your ship or giving you more health, negative effects like as long as you're holding the item or as long as the item is on your ship lightning strikes it during a storm, Or items that affect the waters around you like if you drop it in the water a Whirlpool opens up or something they repel sharks. Stuff like that would add a new and fun element to the game. Make the items have different levels of effects. Some could be a one time use while others last continuously. Some have to be activated and some could be passive. You could either sell the item for lots of gold and reputation or use it to get out of a tight spot or give it to an enemy to sink their ship and take their loot.

Skumpass - a compass that points you to the next fort raid before it pops up and tells you how long until the next raid. Can only be used during that session like activate voyages.

Rorschmap - imagine finding a treasure map that changes to a different island with new treasure randomly for 2-6 hours before finally being completed.

Possessed skulls - A skull that has a ghost shipwright that slowly repairs a ship or an angry spirit that pulls off planks of wood. Maybe the spirit randomly drops your anchor or maybe it adjusts your sails in your favor. Maybe it turns on your lanterns or firing your cannon balls.

Alchemic spices - A thing of spices that when dropped into the water you lose it but sharks don't appear in that area for 30 minutes or a Whirlpool appears.

Hermit crab chest - The hermit crab chest. This one tries to walk off the deck back into the sea if you’re not careful. There already was this very amazing design somewhere. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Chest of storms - Chest of storms where a local storm would be above your ship with lightning and all. Suggested by MorbidSS.

Zeus's Wrath/Praise - A cup that attracts lightning or repels it.

The chest of Aeolus - A chest that blows wind and if you have it on your ship it blows wind whatever Direction you're pointing it in that could give you of speed.

Firebeards Chest - a Chest catches whoever holding it, your ship, or explosive barrels on fire randomly.

    • Islands - Adding a bit more mysticism to the islands by adding underwater Islands or Islands that raised from the Sea. Could use the old story of the giant turtle with the island on its back as in a good example of a moving Island that raises from the Sea and can be an underwater Island.

PERSONAL ISLAND - "So here is my idea:
Everybody wants a private island feature in the game and my idea is that you can buy an island for a lot of gold and also add some NPC or something on it (also for gold) so yeah you invest a lot of gold into it but the idea behind this is that players can visit your island and sell stuff to the NPC and you get a percentage of the gold. So let's say fishing is in the game and you bought an island and also a fishing man NPC where players can sell their fish. Someone who is near your island just looks on the minimap and sees that the nearest place to sell is your island, he goes there, sells his fish and you earned yourself some gold from it.
To make it less op I would suggest that only legendary pirates can to that (which makes becoming a legendary pirate more interesting).

Or you can just wait on your island and kill everybody who goes there and steal his treasure for more profit 😂" Suggested by RapierJunges535

Outpost Option, player resize - Having an option going to an outpost to get into a bigger ship or smaller ship without leaving the game to rejoin then invite friends. Suggested by KoreVirus.

Rising Islands - islands that are kinda like raid events or can be activated by certain voyages not given through NPCs.

Underwater Islands - Islands that you have to swim under the sea and find that have their source of air. Kind like the animated movie Atlantis or how in the new Power Rangers movie the command center is under a body of water.

Moving Islands - Islands that don't stay in one spot for whatever reason.

    -- Additional --

10% extra gold for solo - Only the best solo sloop captains can take down a galleon and also at greater risk sailing the seas. Lets make it worth one's while to solo by increasing sell value of all teasure by 10% across the board. suggested by Sieruken.

Pirate Crews- Think about making a big crew of 10 people that even when you are sailing alone you know have your back. They would pretty function like a guild. Being able to create a fleet and sail under one flag, no matter if you are selling alone or with a few friends, being able to gain a real-world reputation or a leaderboard would be awesome. Also only available to Pirate Captain Legends or Pirate legends and up.

Leaderboard - weekly or monthly leaderboards for Pirate Crews. You can make this an only Pirate Captain Legend thing and have different categories for each fraction, ships sunk, gold earned, and forts were taken. Or you can make different leaderboards for each level of pirates (normal, legend, and captain legend.)

Solution to private games - OFFLINE SPLIT SCREEN. It's that simple.

Events: - NPC ghost ship that only sails at night time. Contains vast treasure. Bright glow or column of ghostly light towards the sky to alert players similar to the skull cloud. Suggested by MorbidSS.

I'm going to keep editing and adding more to this list when I get the chance or if I hear more ideas that would be good to add to the original post.

  • @bleedingfang69 guilds and cursed item would be massive PvP imbalances but otherwise good list!

  • @i-am-lost-77 curse their Mystic items will definitely be an imbalance in the game but that's not necessarily A Bad Thing.

And guilds would be no different than 2 galleons and a sloop teaming up to build a fleet. Just under one name/flag. It would be a massive imbalance if they were all in one server but the likely hood of that happening is very low. But think about being able to build an out of world or real world pirate crew reputation in Sea of Thieves.

  • @bleedingfang69 it would be cool but this game is built around balance so sorry but these ideas will never work

You can make a fleet outside SoT. the forums and there are friends list for that.

  • @i-am-lost-77 They could easily work. Maybe not now with this little of content in the game but they can work. Just look at the chest of sorrows. If you were able to sneak on a ship with it and let it cry, you can easily sink a ship with it.

  • @bleedingfang69 except 1 it’s treasure so please do so. And 2 you can hear it all over the ship so good luck being sneaky. 3 how is that at all the same as a cursed item giving your ship/crew a boost?

@bleedingfang69 it would be cool but this game is built around balance so sorry but these ideas will never work

This game is so far from a competitive gaming experience that I'm actually baffled that people in the forums keep throwing this around like somehow Rare cares about balance in a game where the end-game is literally all cosmetics and the game has no ELO or MMR system at all. The only obligation they have to you as far as "balance" is to make a PVP system that's fun and feels fair. The rest they could probably care less. If balance actually mattered no one should be able to queue as a solo player, because those odds are never going to be fair given the game state. Teaming's not a bannable offense in SoT so I don't see why Rare doesn't just add an 8-player party system and a frigate ship. with 4 guns per deck. Then maybe you'd see the game actually start to expand in content once people stopped whining about 'balance'. This game isn't balanced. Stop using that word like it matters in this super casual game.

  • Giving a boost or something that effects you in a negative way as well like a "Lightning Rod". Mystic items give you a positive effect and cursed items give you a negative effect. The idea doesn't have to be repairing the ship but could be as simple as being a shark repellent while looking for treasure in a sunken ship. These items can still be sold for gold or you can use there effects but they sell for less.

  • @levernicus it’s not about casual vs competitive it’s about griefing new/inexperienced players with additional buffs making sure they now have no way to win.

  • @bleedingfang69 I’m against buffs but if they want to make a skull that makes lightning target your ship that’s fine. If it’s risk vs reward like the chest of sorrows it’s balanced. If it’s “now my ship can repair itself” it’s not balanced

  • @i-am-lost-77 The concept you have for the game right now is the same reason the community died between February and April. Everyone realized Rare had no backup plan for awarding players with anything notable from the 3 alliances. The game is in desperate need of scaling content. If other people like you and the devs don't realize that then this game will die and no one is going to step in to save it because they will realize that the devs don't care about giving players a motivation to keep playing. Many people over the years were of the impression that there would be a light amount of RPG elements. Removing all these ideas leaves the game in a state of all pasta and no sauce. If you think such a thing can't be done. Wake up. It's 2018, there's like 1000 MMOs that came before this game that know how to do open world scaling PVP and still make it feel fair. No one wants to play a massive multiplayer PVP game with no progression.

  • @levernicus I don’t need gear stats or upgrades to feel like I got my money’s worth out of a game. It needs content but I don’t want to get bs on a quest because some guy who plays significantly longer then I do has double damage explosive cannons and 4x thicker hull. Thanks but cosmetics only are fine in THIS game as long as it has plenty of unique content/quests and a fun combat(needs improvement) and sailing system(great right now). Content and combat improvemt is what this game needs not vertical progression. The best crew should be the best because of skill not playtime.

  • @bleedingfang69
I like the defined roles idea but the number 1 rule of being a captain is that the captain must go down with the ship. That's pirating 101

  • @bleedingfang69
gaaaarrrr me pirate greed be too strong to ever purposefully leave a treasure chest on another ship

  • @i-am-lost-77 I never said anything about what you have listed. Doing more damage or having thicker ships would change the game altogether. But having an item that makes the wind blow in your favor for a few minutes or having a item that slowly repairs a ship at the rate of 4 holes per minute would give you an edge. Having a item that slows down an enemy ship or causes it to take twice as long to repair a ship wouldn't be a game breaker. But you're talking about stat boost not how items can affect the way you play the game. There is a big difference.

  • @i-am-lost-77
Don't kid yourself. As an individual you don't decide. The market does. If the game flounders it's obviously because demands aren't met. Not everyone's partaking in your little solo case-study. It's obvious that people are leaving the game already. And I'm personally struggling to find more people to play the game. I can count multiple times where I've tried to sell friends on the game and when I tell them that the only progression to be made in the game is cosmetic, the quests are more or less the same, and sixty dollars people immediately are turned off and they have told me verbatim 'I'll probably never buy it even though it sounds fun for a little while'.

But, I don't want the game to die. I'd like to see some improvements made. So far there are a bunch of people saying 'the game is fine as it is' and everyone who thinks that needs to re-think marketing and game design in 2018 because if the game continues with its present course of design it will be dead in not too much time and everyone who thinks this game is OK why don't you just roll on over to /r/Gigantic or /r/Paragon and take a look at what a game looks like when problems aren't addressed. Triple A games that are not designed as Gaming-as-a-Service absolutely must have story and content on release, this game has very little (and literally no story), and no microtransactions. There are some of us that are willing to pay 60$ for a title like this just for a week or so experience, but many (and many of my friends personally) will never throw down money for such a lack of polish. As it stands I'm very skeptical that the community will grow any larger than it has on release if the game design does not take this seriously and I believe if it does not improve it's peak will have been day 1 release and Beta Jan - March. People might come back to play patches but I doubt the community legitimately grows. If we took a look at the numbers I would be willing to bet that the game saw its highest numbers and server activity during first closed-beta when it was being streamed on Twitch by like half the PC community and I doubt the scale test betas and day one release even made a dent compared to those first beta numbers, and I say this because that's when most the people I knew who I have added on Sea of Thieves were playing. Now my friends list for SoT is more like a Sea-of-Offline.

Edit: People are begging for some type of progression. Even if it's siomply varied weapons or cannonballs with their own pros and cons that fit the bill for viability and fair-play given a day-1 player. They need to make it happen.

Not game breaking huh? Solo sloop trying to cash in. Here comes a galleon with the slow down curse. Bye to your loot because you thought you could outrun a galleon in a headwind.

Just put a broadside into an enemy ship now it takes them twice as long to repair because of this repair curse. Waters flooding in they can’t finish repairs because it takes forever as the enemy crew rushes down with blunderbusses. Try same tactic in reverse they get a facefull of blunderbusses trying to rush the repairers because other team could repair their ship faster.

Why do you need an edge are you incapable of beating them in a fair fight?

  • @levernicus your obsession for needing something to unlock as evidence of your gameplay time is silly. Games are for entertainment and fun. I love Rares vison of balance. I never have to worry about sailing up to a ship and wondering if they have better items then I can currently acquire. Content needs improvement but a more in depth customization option to show off your ship and maybe special events that grant you special sails or figureheads that make you character and ship unique and recognized is more than enough. I don’t need a player unlocking a higher damage blunderbuss because he played the game longer then another player.

  • Having ways to tip the battle in your favor can make the game more fun. And think of creative ways to win a fight even though things seem like they are not in your favor. Oh the enemy ship has the heavy object cursed looks like unless they can get it off their ship and onto that sloop they are never going to be able to catch them.

Your ship is sinking are you going to fight or figure out a way to get the cursed item off your ship. You keep forgetting that they are items just like the chest if sorrows.

And you think a 1v4 is a fair fight? But having items that could give that one person a fighting chance Or could give a 4v4 battle from taking forever to taking less time. But we are talking about items that are just as rare as the chest of 1000 groggs or sorrows. Do you always find a lot chest of sorrows or Groggs Everytime you get on? If so I want to play with you more often.

Progression can be many things and not just stat boost. The current progression system is in cosmetics the higher your reknown is the better looking stuff you get. That's still a unlock progression system. Adding on to this isn't a bad thing.

  • @bleedingfang69
+1 on Interior changes, Additional combat tactics, Mystic and cursed items, New Island types

    Nice suggestions!

  • @itsthraxlol Thanks

  • @bleedingfang69 progression that gives player an unfair combat advantage because of longer playtime is different then cosmetic which is a showcase of accomplishment. Chest of Sorrows is not a weapon it is a treasure. It can be used as a weapon for fun but the tactical implications of it sinking a ship are far fetched. Another post someone mentioned a chest of combustion (long story short it thread was about fire being added to the game as an environmental hazard) which would light the ground around it or the player holding it on fire. I'm fine with things like this but not things that give players an advantage because they played longer. All the special chests are technically punishments to the haulers. But having items that give you bonuses for having them is a broken system for this game.

So yay to cursed items nay to mystic item for me.

As for more weapons as long as they don't need to be unlocked and are available to all players at the start I am fine with it.

  • @i-am-lost-77 said in More ways to improve Sea of Thieves.:

@levernicus your obsession for needing something to unlock as evidence of your gameplay time is silly.

It's not "silly". Literally hundreds if not thousands of games are based on this model. Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean your opinion is better. One of the most popular games of this generation, World of Warcraft, is literally built around this model. I'm not suggesting this game needs to adopt scaling weaponry or become an MMO, but it does need unlocks. Your acting all high and mighty like scaling weapons is somehow this foreign and undesirable system when there are seriously probably thousands of games that utilize this model is like denying that the sky is blue. You might not like it, but like I've said previously, a small minority doesn't decide an entire market's decisions, and sometimes business decisions are poor when they don't read their market properly. If the only market Rare wants to capture is this small niche portion of gamers that are gonna shill out 60$ for a casual game with hardly any content and no scaling that no one will play again, and had more people watch on Twitch than actually play, that's all fine and dandy, that's what they'll get, if that's what they want. If this is all it amounts to is this charming yet shallow-in-concept pirate game then fine. That's their business decision. But something tells me Rare would actually like to see their game grow. Unfortunately if it doesn't then it's obvious they haven't read what the market would actually like to see. It doesn't mean people can't like it for being super basic and simple. But we might actually be pleasantly surprised to see what an alternate development of this game could've looked like if scaling unlocks actually existed in the game. And for those of you saying "Well you wouldn't be able to just pick up the game and be on the same level!!". Duh. Obviously. That's why games place parameters around this where experienced PLAYERS don't and can't just harass new players. There's so many ways to work around this, MMOs and RPGs have been doing this for over a decade. I'm curious if anyone on this forum actually games at all.

  • @i-am-lost-77 I'm not sure where you got the idea of them only being unlocked because of progression they would all have the same amount of access if they are all different kinds of treasure. Like finding a compass that points you to the next fort raid or finding a treasure map that pops up with new treasure on random Island for 2 hours. A skull that has a ghost shipwright that slowly repairs a ship or an angry spirit that pulls off planks off wood. A thing of spices that when dropped into the water you lose it but sharks don't appear in that area for 30 minutes or a Whirlpool appears. A cup that attracts lightning or repels it. A chest that blows wind and if you have it on your ship it blows wind whatever Direction you're pointing it that gives you a boost of speed. You seem to have the whole idea of how the game works or how items in the game works mixed up with a game that cares about stats when I have never said anything about stats or only having access to said items because of time you have brought those up. But I'm so adding the iteams I just listed.

  • @levernicus Now I know where he is getting stat changes. What you are talking about is changing the way the game operates. I'm not behind that idea at all one of the reasons I love the game is because of how everyone is on the same level. The system they have now where new cosmetics unlock at higher levels and the voyages get harder and harder or have gotten shorter and shorter time limits works. Rare has stated from the beginning that they would never add a system that let's someone have an advantage because they paid for it or because of how much time they have spent in game. It's the same model of progression as overwatch but is more than just cosmetics because voyages actually get more difficult overtime and leveling.

  • Updated and still working on adding more suggestions.

  • For the new barrel UI, what about instead of going into the whole menu to get everything out of the barrel how about giving us the option to hold "X"(or whatever on PC) to grab everything that we can hold out of the barrel but we can still press "X" to access the barrel menu if there is a cursed ball or something in there. suggested by alexrios111 and Zaxop

  • allowing people to have and assign ship roles to each other giving them nothing more than a title of "Captain of the (ship name goes here)" or "Navigator of the (ship name goes here)" displayed under your Gamertag would be nice.

I like that. Presumably, it could not be free-form text, but the list of potential crew roles is long. There would be no harm in making them purchasable vanity items too, like the many GH, OOS, and MA titles. But my list would include:

    • captain
    • first mate
    • second mate
    • midshipman
    • boatswain, or bosun
    • quartermaster
    • navigator
    • helmsman
    • gunner
    • topman
    • deckhand
    • waister
    • foremast jack
    • swabbie
    • powder monkey
    • cabin boy (or girl)
    • cook
    • surgeon
    • carpenter
    • buccaneer
    • ruffian
    • scallywag
    • whench
      and, of course...
    • master
      and
    • commander
