Why is ride of the valkyries in the game?

  • It was first written down in 1851. Piracy in the Caribbean ended in 1830 (where the game is based on).
    Why was this choice made?
I don't really mind it, it's just bit odd. :)

  • Because it is epic! This game isn't going for historical accuracy.

  • @jimmcq
    True!
I'm just used to hear it in different setting (WW2) so maybe that is why it feels bit weird.

  • The games is filled with skeletons, mermaids, a ghost ship, clouds that resemble skulls, a sea monster, and magical riddles and maps. An anachronistic song is the least of the accuracy concerns. :)

  • @thevipe268 just because

  • @ghostpaw
Well these things are completely different. You really can't even compare them. Historical accuracy and realism are two different things. And as I said, not a big deal, just curious.

  • I also thought it seemed out of place but I didn’t realize why until I read this post.

  • For the same reason there's skeletons, a kraken, skull shaped clouds, mermaids, shooting yourself from cannons, and eating unpeeled bananas. Because they can. There's a rule in game development called mechanics. Never attempt to use realism as an excuse for mechanics. This also applies to artistic renditions and historical accuracy as well. Unless your game is intended rather strictly as a historical simulator or something, it really doesn't matter. Considering this game is HIGHLY arcade-like, questioning this seems rather silly.

The game also isn't even based in the Caribbean. It's a made up worldspace they've said themselves. "Like a crease in the map, unseen, but these pirates have found their way there."

  • @ghost-0f-dawn
The game is obviously based on Caribbean piracy during 1500-1800.
And as I said game can be historically accurate while being unrealistic (magic and stuff).
For example Indiana Jones is historically quite accurate but unrealistic. Do you understand what I am after?
And please don't be so defensive, I was just curious!

  • @thevipe268 You asked and I answered. It wasn't defensiveness, it was reasoning. Also, Pirates of the Caribbean would be "based on Caribbean piracy (with magic and stuff.)" As I stated before, the devs have mentioned where this game takes place and really it's just an arcade take on ye olde ship battles with its own lore. Historical accuracy just limits you into a certain thematically setting, so it's not always the best direction for a game.

  • Am I the only one that thinks of Bugs Bunny when they hear this tune?

    "Kill the Wabbit!"

  • Ahhh yes! Do you guys remember in History when pirates shot themselves out of cannons? Or ate bananas to heal a gunshot wound?

My favorite part of history is being able to die and play music and dance!!

I love how historically accurate this game is!!!

  • @ghost-0f-dawn
You don't really understand what "based on" means, do you?
It doesn't mean that the game is SET in the Caribbean sea and the time. It takes INSPIRATION and certain SETTINGS from it.
And I don't see why REAL song would have anything to do with made up stuff, such as
    living skeletons.

  • I can't think of a better tune to sail into battle with.

  • @thevipe268 I do know what "based on" means, yes. Because "taking inspiration from" is not the same thing. You seem to be the one being defensive, you asked a question in the OP and I gave you an answer that I suppose does not satisfy you. For Honor "takes inspiration" From knighthood, Vikings, and Samurai, even though the time periods of their heights don't even correlate. Correlation is not causation, and just because this game is about pirates, and the Caribbean was once a height of piracy does not mean they are a direct cause.

  • I was curious about this being in the game as well.

Robin Beanland (the game's music director) is an excellent composer, and could easily have written a more fitting battle theme. The rest of the playable songs avaliable fits the tone of the game a lot better (in my opinion).

Regardless, I think the inclusion of the piece will bring more joy than harm to the overall playerbase.

  • I'd quite like to see the Dirty Sailor Song included in the game but I'm not sure if it passes the 'pirate code'.

Warning contains NSFW lyrics that some oversensitive people might find offensive ...

  • because Charlie don't surf

  • @ghost-0f-dawn
Well, you obviously don't understand how you can make different game settings and how certain things don't correlate. So I will just give up.
    Throw me to the brig!

  • The obvious reason is that the pirates in Sea of Thieves (us) were the awesome leftover pirates that didn't get wiped out when piracy "ended" - and are now back to take over! DUH! :P

  • @thevipe268 This game has a Kraken in it, what year was that beast sighted so we can have maximum accuracy?

  • Because this game is all good fun. If I was a developer, I would make the instruments play the Ghostbusters theme when the player was in a cave with ghosts, for example. Besides, RotV sounds amazing while sailing in a storm and firing cannons.

  • Or - some musky bilge rat had wrote the tune prior to 1851 and had been jamming out to it on his ship. Wagner heard the epicness of the tune on the seas, killed said pirate and stole the song and released it as his own work.

Another very plausible possibility of course.... :P

  • What else should you be playing when sailing into the storm =P

If you want me to get defensive then fine. Since you're too solid on trying to tell me what I do or don't know, I'd wager I have a more complete understanding of creating video games than you think, considering I work with a team creating one on a daily basis. Does Ride of the Valkyrie correlate with the age of piracy? No. Does it need to? No. Please refrain from asking questions about your curiosities on the forums if you are unable to handle a factual answer.

  • I think a better question is why isn't 15 Men in the game. Or Santianno. And why do you have to pick up a chest to hear Drunken Sailor.

  • I think I read that the game is actually set in current time but some event created this world we play within.

  • @ghost-0f-dawn
I doesn't need to correlate with piracy. But wouldn't it be weird if there was a sudden skrillex song in the game?
And I was talking that there is no correlation between a REAL song and made up stuff, like shooting yourself out of the cannon and living skeletons and kraken and so on. You just keep ignoring it. I am not saying that you can't have the song in the game. I am just saying that there is no correlation between the song and stuff from imagination.
That's why your explanation isn't really good (the song is there because kraken and stuff).

Also, you can construct a game like For Honor which is really unrealistic, but the look, clothing, music and weapons still can be historically accurate. (Not saying they are).
You know what I am saying? I hope I clarified what I am trying to say here.

And one thing, there are lot of good songs that are from or for the time period, so this choice is weird. IT'S GOOD but still weird.

  • @thevipe268 You are very emotionally tied to your position. You asked a question and we answered with an opinon. You have your lived experience and we have a right to one that differs from yours. I was thrilled to hear that one included in the game. The song being within the game is about as accurate a representation of history as any Wagner opera.

  • @thevipe268 Then I don't really understand why you are asking in the first place. The answer is in your own comment. "Its good." My explanation is exactly what you're saying. There is no correlation of the "Real" song because there does not need to be one.

  • I do not think the OP was actually a question after all. It was meant more of a statement that they do not think the songs fits within the game although they follow up with it is a good song. We are meant to simply agree that it is wrong, then acknowledge they made some mistake. I think it was purposeful because I am sure Mr. Beanland and the team are familiar enough with Wagner and pirate history.

  • @ghost-0f-dawn
There are a lot of good songs, even from the time period. So it is weird why this non-time period song was chosen over the other good song from the actual time period. Which this game is based on. Or was there some other time period and place where these kind of pirates did exist?
    @Ghostpaw
Well it doesn't feel very good when every one come and say "Because the game isn't realistic. Duh." That isn't an answer. And it feels like every one thought I am suggesting to remove the song. Just tried to prove why those kind of answers aren't that great and so the snowball grows. :D
There is also those who are nice about this, so my thanks to you!

You certainly read a lot into my original post that was not there when I typed it.

  • @ghostpaw
I didn't mean you, you original post was fine. And could be an explanation. It was cool.

  • @thevipe268 Cool. We're good.
