The story of the game is going NOWHERE

  • Don't get me wrong another meg and more hunter's call stuff is cool, but can you please progress the story. I for one am a tall tale player, I love the thrilling plots the secret lairs and the rewards, it feels like you really earn them. But the story goes absolutely nowhere, Flameheart this Flameheart that shroudbreaker this puzzle solving this, it is so repetitive. I get it Flameheart's the big bad but he's already been released and returned and wow he's actually been around way longer than season 14. DO SOMETHING ELSE, sorry about the all caps but oh my goodness it has been so weak, story defines what an interesting game is and without it it's just pointless. I want to uncover the rest of the story and I know I'm not the only one, but there is no more story to uncover, like that's it its done, new meg great who else is the bad guy we've already established that this game needs more than one bad guy to keep it interesting and right now, what nobody is going to at least rebel against Flameheart , nobody to maybe stop the merchants from getting business, you could even have the gold hoarders have something going wrong with the curse they all have. All we have is a ghost needs you to fight Flameheart's forces or stop whatever he's doing that's it, anything other than Flameheart would be very much appreciated, smooth sailing and, if you have the time to read all this, tell me what you think.

  • Everything seems pretty back-burner right now as they continue to prioritize performance/cheating.

Problem with that is pretty obvious, it's a lot of deja vu and setbacks with performance, and cheating is always something that is around.

The characters might be around but the depth probably won't be any time soon, if it ever shows back up.

Everyone has their preferred piece of content or type of play that they wanna see TLC for, a lot of it probably won't see much at this point in a live service game.

  • Theoretically, Season 16 (the one after the incoming one) should be focused on Flameheart and Reapers. So, probably, we will see a progress in the conflict between the factions. But I agree with you, there was so much potential with the lore and they simply abandoned it. Dark Brethren comes back with the new limited voyage "raid on the dark fortress", but I think they will disappear again right after that. Also, every menace comes from the sea of the damned (even the new megs). They went from a very promising lore to zero effort and creativity. For now, you can only read the sot comics for extra lore.

It was when it turned into fomo content that was designed for engagement where it became convoluted story telling.

It's tough to tell a good story and create a good lore experience when it's temporary content where people are just scrambling to get rewards in time (and sometimes dealing with the nightmare of finding cooperation in a pirate game), or mysteries where most of the players have no idea what is even happening.

How would anyone that hasn't been a lore enthusiast even have a chance to find out what has been going on with lore in this game in recent years? I've done it all and I don't even know what the story was.

Whether people liked them or they didn't, PotC and Monkey Island were well made for story telling. People can follow those stories along as they easily access the content.

Shouldn't be fomo, shouldn't be about social media engagement. Should be easy to access tall tales where people have time to enjoy them, no rush, no social media stuff, just quality storytelling that stays in the game.

A significant amount of content in SoT has either organically lost significant interest in the first few weeks of release or patches removed organic appeal of content. It's tough to say tall tales aren't worth the resources when they very well might be more consistent than a bunch of the contrived combat and organically unappealing content that has been added since season 8.

  • Can’t have both. You either get content while they try to make sure servers don’t break. Or get massive story driven updates and forget about the server performance

  • There is some truth to this post as I have gotten eye rolling at that possibility of better story tell in the game and I can list a few

    1. let us save and archive stories like ya there books/interactive in the world but the game does the one thing that most game try to avoid and that having the player stand still reading lore or have audio tapes making you frozen in a menu is something that most gamer hate and this game does it one step forth and make you frozen in a live world making you read something and hoping you don't get attack when you could easy give us the ability to read it on the ship by saving stories in a pirate log with location and date of you finding it and having them all log in in order of storyline

    2. give us doubloons/reward for interacting with the current story elements having merrick on the shark bait cove was cool a nice way of tell us the story with in the game but having no reward for even trying to read the text making the story pointless except for people that want to know or stumble onto it

    3. allow us to expert adventure in some way, yes it basically change the game completely but for new/returning player, that part of the story is blank in there mind and confuse people outside of the know

    4. let your other npc do stuff, I know giving people insight of what coming up in the next is a problem because of multiple problem with the dev cycle but having the npc running around the world doing something outside of what the next season and having them do something outside of the current planned event and maybe something else would be neat like have mumble coming from pendragon painting like maybe he would return or having belle outside Athena fortune talking about trying to stop Flameheart and finding hint from the ancients to stop him or have the trading company talk about new treasure out there that we still haven't found yet. it doesn't have to spell it out or even lead to something big it just need to allow the world to feel like it's breathing, you could just have a Red Ruth just chilling in the reaper layer talk about how she was once human or lost to a game of chest with Old Horatio

    5. having new quest unlock if you 100% another, like the siren skull being the most annoy one and having a part two of that quest would be nice like having briggsy tell you about something else she want you to do after you did that long enough would be nice and have it link to Athena fortune rep quest would work, like give us the player a reason to do stuff that has lore reason other then there books in this tale tall quest and we will give you a boot to place on your boat now, have quest link to other quest. (yes I watch shangri-la frontier for this one)

  • @burnbacon While I understand that Rare's not the largest company and can't do everything, I feel like a lot of people have just begun to believe that it's acceptable to just have one thing or the other at a time. Plenty of other games with tiny companies/indie developers are easily able to give content while also fixing bugs. A good game should not act as a little pendulum that just sways between having interesting content and giving nothing while trying to fix things that are inevitably end up broken.

Again I get that we can't expect rare to do everything at once, we have every right to demand that their game is capable of working properly and simultaneously remains interesting and novel to play.
