Man O' War

  • The following are the reasons and description of a basic Man O' War that could be used to create a better Sea of Thieves with 24 player servers and better general balancing.

Drastically reducing turning radius and forcing them to have to drop their anchor to stop moving and to be able to truly use the power of the ship. Using the black Pearl ship model for a 6-person ship would create enough of a challenge to the ship itself for it to be used to destroy other ships with ease. The largest benefit would come when ships choose to attack 6 people, the ship could easily deal damage to other models. Front facing cannons could be used to supplement the ships low speed during chases, this ship could also be the first, to have mortars, which would take a lot of skill to use but airstrikes at a short range with a mortar. PVE is the main advantage for a ship such as this, but not to mention the fact that a good sloop player can easily take out a galleon, this is becoming for apparent as the game continues to grow.

The Man O' War which could be the Black Pearl ship type could consist of:

    -3 Decks
-top deck with cannons, harpoons, chaser cannons, steering bridge (with map room), and of course the sails and anchor
-second deck with cannons and storage.
-third deck with cooking area (with future additions of a stove with a pot, pan, and baking pan) and also has an area to sit with crewmates. A piano was an idea that I had.
-fourth deck with brig and water pump which has the ability to fill barrels on all three levels below the top.

  • I don't remember who said it, but a Rare employee said that Man o' War won't be possible, because currently the player limit per server is 16 people and a ship of this size would be unfeasible.

  • Yeah, this one gets requested A LOT but I don't see them adding it as a playable vessel, it would just be too much strain on servers.

However, I wouldn't rule out some sort of AI encounter with a Man O' War or similar... would be an interesting world event. Imagine having a ship of that scale that requires multiple crews to take it down.

  • @targasbr I thought the server size was 24 at one point?

  • @realstyli I think it could be more manageable now, I mean you got to go on the black pearl and could interact with the parts of the ship the same way you would a normal ship.

It was 24 or 6 ships a few months ago, then it became 20 or 5 ships and now it's 5 ships or 16 players

  • @targasbr I just would think with the cloud being a main focus of Xbox Live, scaling resources to accommodate wouldn't be too far off.

The Black Pearl doesn't function like a ship though, you can't actually sail it and it only moves once you disembark. And then it moves on rails, kind of.

They've been trying for a few years to maintain stability on the servers, I think it was a very difficult decision to remove 8 players from each server, so I doubt this will change.

  • @michael-b4418 *throws thread onto the heap of man o war posts

  • Would Absolutely love this, the game definitely needs more than three ship classes and to have The Black Pearl model in game as a playable ship would be the best. I also feel like it would give challenges for people not only going up against but also using it and add to the immersion of the game.
