Insider reward structure discouraging ppl from joining?

  • Disclaimer: Nothing here is under the NDA this is all public knowledge, there is even a youtube video on the insider rewards and how long it will take for you to unlock them once you begin. IE start now and it will take you till 2025 to get rewards we got in 2022

With no catch up mechanic for insider rewards the later a person joins the program the further behind they will be. Forever getting further and further behind. The gold reward tiers are laughable considering you play 1 hour to get 3k gold. You could just go visit 1 island or a shipwreck near the outpost you log into and make more than that in under 5 minutes.

For those who dont understand what a catch up mechanic is, it is a way for you to "catch up" to those who are ahead of you. Granted this is usually more a system for games with power creep like WoW. For example you come into a game a year after everyone else, you wouldnt be able to play with them because you would be a whole year of progress behind them and would be a hindrance to their play.

While the cosmetics of insiders are an added bonus to helping test the game they also create this mentality of "well i got my 1 hour this week time to log" instead of fully finishing testing of new stuff. This has lead to a lot of insiders just AFKing for an hour each week vs actually going out to test anything. Doesnt help that feedback is often ignored there as much as it is on the normal forums.

If someone wants the insider cosmetics but then they look at the fact that they need to play for 3 whole years to collect the cosmetics they have missed out on by not playing..... This also means they need to play 3 more years to get the newer stuff because they are so far behind. And as long as new insider rewards keep getting put out there will be no end to the need to catch up and how far behind new testers will be.

  • It's not a race.

  • The point of the insiders program isn't the rewards, it is indeed a nice perk and certainly why many people do it, but it isn't the point.

  • I don't join insiders because I don't want to install SoT 2x, and I wouldn't make the reports that would help. 😅

  • @magus104 by your logic these same players won’t start playing SoT because they can no longer get any of the cosmetics from the first year events, arena, or even the first adventure now.

Any form of altering the speed of insider rewards would go against those that have participated thus far, unless of course you are saying those veterans could use the same mechanic to speed up gaining new rewards as well?

  • The only way I'd be in support of a "catch up" system is if it required actual testing and feedback to be done.

As it stands, way too many people just go AFK for an hour and contribute nothing to the program. It's the same ~50-100 people providing consistent feedback on the Insider pages...but there's WAY more people than that in the program claiming rewards.

  • I understand the sentiment behind this but that argument could be said for a lot of things in this game. Most notably, the Emissary system. Should they stop introducing rewards because it’ll take people a while to get them? Or make a catch up mechanic for that?

In my opinion no. When I see someone with the Emissary weapons or full ship set I know they’re active players in that faction. Same with insider rewards. If I see someone with Sapphire blade stuff then I know they’re an active tester.

Catch up mechanics aren’t bad, but they can and will devalue the time that others have spent with each system. I understand that the system in its current form will turn people away from the program but if you’re only playing it for rewards then you shouldn’t of signed up IMO.

I myself am behind 30 weeks. Now it’s not as behind as most players but it sucks now having the most up to date gear. But no way I’d want to catch up to them if that meant devaluing other players time spent.

I do agree that it shouldn’t depend on time spent though. Maybe they could make a system where players had to be active, completing voyages or testing whatever we happened to be testing. That would cut down on people just going afk if they actually had to play on the server to get their weekly reward.

  • The point of Insiders isn't about the rewards to begin with. It's about playtesting the game to make the release smoother and so that it works better. Having so many rewards was their first mistake. Sure maybe a ship, equipment and weapon set, but much else beyond that keeps the people coming back to sit afk for an hour like you said. I don't know how they could fix this since they already have so many rewards, perhaps reducing the afk timer for Insiders to 5 minutes, putting all the cosmetics either closer together or further away, but grouping them together in general so there can be a dedicated period of time people can spend on actually playtesting instead.
I don't know, I'm not a professional, but to me it's not about the cosmetics, it's about people not playing Insiders for it's intended reason. If I had my say they shoulda kept Insiders to a private group of players with more than a thousand hours.

  • As many and I believe OP said and mention

Insiders is for testing out the future projects and help the dev team flush out any issues and if the new stuff even works.
The rewards you get are just there to encourage you into spending one hour, enough time to fully test something.

How those in insiders actually do anything is up to them and if they don’t report any feedback they are only hindering themselves and the possible future releases.
Most of the time Rare just needs players in a server with the new stuff and use data on players login and time it took for them to do A to B

If you don’t wanna do anything. Fine.
those who been an insider longer will get newer stuff. The newer stuff is for those true insiders who are dedicated in helping.

Maybe. Just maybe. Rare might bring those insider rewards into the public for all but hide them behind some commendation or achievements. (Maybe)

  • I personally am very behind when it comes to insider rewards (week 32), but this didn't discourage me from joining the program. On the contrary, my greed for all the rewards partially motivates me to keep testing!😅

A catch up system only makes sense to do for players who actually test and discover something game breaking, very glitchy, e.t.c. Anything else would just be handing cosmetics to people who frankly don't deserve it

  • Naaaah, the main reward you get is that you will get a chance to see and play with stuff before others.

The other rewards (cosmetics and such) are just a little bonus.

  • So what do you want to be done about it?

  • I’m not an Insider because I don’t have time for helpful feedback and I want to be surprised

  • I agree that the gold rewards no longer match what they used to be worth when insiders first started, and it does not help that around week 40 they realized gold is not exciting and reduced the interval between rewards.

Honestly would not be entirely opposed to a small catch up system if it got more people testing because to be honest the first adventure came with a plethora of problems and with them only being on live for a couple of weeks really need to be big free in the future.

I would like to see either the insider rewards stop at week 200 or let players say get 1 extra week every 3 weeks for posting feedback.

  • As others have mentioned, it’s not a race to get rewards, and the rewards themselves are simply bonuses for encouraging players to test at least one hour per week. Why should someone with a catch-up system, get the same rewards in half the time for example, that it took someone who’s been testing since the beginning of the program? You cannot tell me that wouldn’t be absurd. Anyone who starts getting their rewards now, will not get the rewards any faster or any slower than anyone who began before. These posts have been made before and it’s simply players who just want the rewards, but don’t want to actually put in the time for them, so they ask for this catch up system to get the cosmetics.

or you can earn your rewards the same way we did; one week at a time.
