  • Not a fan, as I will say on every iteration of this post that comes up.

  • why not tho

  • It can open the door to much better experiences for players like to discover new places

  • Please no. It will be fun the first few weeks and then eventually fall to the same fate as the Devil's Roar. Hardly anyone goes to the Devil's Roar anymore.

  • I don't think there will be a problem if special missions are brought to new the islands and there are no volcanoes.

  • Snow & ice may look nice on islands, but I'm not looking forward to being stuck in the ice on my ship or rowboat.

It also doesn't fit the Caribbean feel of the game.

  • @mastiedarkfie it doesn't align with the theme of the game well at all. I've yet to see an ice/snow mechanic in a videogame that I've found entertaining, generally it is just frustrating and cumbersome. I find the visual aesthetics of a snow/ice region to be bland and uninteresting. The idea feels very unoriginal to me (a reverse Devil's Roar) when there is a lot more interesting potential this game could tap into (Sea of the Damned, the Sunken Kingdom, etc).

I disagree with it being comparable to the roar

the roar by design is a high irritation and high reward wasteland, designed and implemented at a different point in time where the base of the game was still pretty rugged

The game now is a high casual appeal situation. They are gonna mess around anywhere pretty with a positive vibe and there are a lot more of those types of people now.

I don't think it will be much different than any of the other content, popular for a bit and then just a thing that some people do

but I think it would be quite a bit more popular than the roar

long term worth the development? probably not but I don't think it would be any worse than anything else. A lot of the "oooohh and ahhhh" crowd would mess with it, which is a growing portion of the game.

I think it would be more popular than the kingdom stuff as well based entirely on them not having to leave their ship for a bunch of time in the way the sunken stuff works.

  • Is it a nice idea? Sure. Has it been suggested by just about everybody? Yep.

The problem with adding an ice area in would be it would be really fun for the first few weeks and then left to rot like the Devil’s Roar has been. I’d personally love to see more vertical jungle type islands. Like we see in some of the concept images.

  • I've spent the last 2 days in the Roar. Not boring at all!

And for those of you saying that ice isn't a good fit, couldn't you say the same for the Roar?

  • Here's your answer straight from Sea of Thieves' Executive Producer Joe Neate's mouth:

(If the link doesn't bring you to the correct timecode, go to 2hrs 12mins in)

No, it's not a nice idea; it's an ICE idea, and I'm here to stop you cold, because we don't NEED this at all; you WANT this... Big difference - kind of like fire and i...

That's enough PUNishment for now. 😅

  • Apparently they have no intention of releasing an ice area as others have stated...

Definitely disappointing IMO, but not game changing.

What's absolutely hilarious is that last year they released an ice-themed outfit, seemingly for no reason other than it being a money grab given this news.

Gotta love that dry, British "humour"

    The outfit was free.

  • We have two sets themed around the cold, Frozen Horizon and Frostbite (the latter set being incomplete), it would be very strange if they have no intentions whatsoever of having an ice region.

I'm hopeful that one day portals will be used to transport players to more interesting biomes other than the sea of the damned, such as dense jungles, deserts, tundras etc, even if it's just for a small tall tale or something.

  • @alienmagi what about all the weapons? Ship set?

  • @mastiedarkfie
I agree that it's a nice idea but any time someone brings it up its instantly met with 'no'.
I however think it would add a bigger map space to explore, more islands more loot types, more weapon types, more obstacles to figure out how to overcome come, maybe even a new ship type or equipment to be able to get through the ice, and for a time it will be something to keep us entertained with this game.
Honestly why even make a frozen horizon set if you're not going to give us a friggen frozen horizon?

  • @xxcoldfangxx Money. Grab.

  • We need? But why.

  • @thagoochiestman said in we need an ice islands like devils roar but ice on it:

Very much so and it's disappointing.

  • @xxcoldfangxx I wonder how sales of those items would have gone if players had known at the time that these would be one-offs, with no hope of it matching a future biome in SoT.

  • @thagoochiestman
Not sure. I got the ship set because it was gorgeous honestly. But other people probably had different thoughts.

  • @thagoochiestman are you referring to the Frostbite or Frozen Horizon set? Both is which we’re released in winter.

I would think both because this is a Caribbean themed style game, why have a winter clothes set in a biome that has no need for it?

  • @thagoochiestman

    ?
How would buying a ice theme set be a promise of a new biome? And who would buy the set and think it's bad if a biome is never released? We buy emporium cosmetics for looks - nothing else. Those cold-themed sets were for the winter season, not as a promise for some new biome.

    Money. Grab.

You're the one throwing your money away if you think an emporium cosmetic is a promise for a future update.

  • @lem0n-curry The game could fully house an artic section, and still be fine. Depends how the Devs decide to work it into lore. Like the Shroud recedes further north and reveals a iceberg ridden section of the sea. With new enemy types or frozen renditions of existing enemies. New islands with new lore of other pirates that found themselves shipwrecked in the ice and wrote their stories to leave behind for us pirates to read and learn of the region. New outposts form up as well through lore and/or videos. I'm just saying, it COULD happen.

At least the ashen outfits make sense to put in the game. They have an entire section of map dedicated to it. Unless of course you forgot about how they made the devils roar and released matching clothing, equipment, weaponry, and ship sets.
How many people can say they actually bought the frozen clothing set? I sure as heck didn't. While it may not be a direct indication of a new biom, considering what they have done with devils roar and the ashen clothing sets it is not a surprise that anyone would think a new section of map is coming to the game.
If anything the frozen set is like dangling a baited hook in front of the players faces-knowing perfectly well that there have been many people asking for a new biome. This isn't the first post asking for an icy wonderland and it more than likely won't be the last.

  • @lem0n-curry That would be cool, getting your ship holes because of the random pieces of ice (broken icebergs), or even moving icebergs that can make more holes and slow down your ship if u'll crash into them. I described what I wanted to sad very bad (maybe) cus english is not my main language, but , I hope u got what I wanted to say.

  • @xxcoldfangxx for fun? Temperature isn’t really a thing in this game so it doesn’t really matter what you’re wearing.

  • btw they can also reskin ashen lords to the icey lords lol. Add this to the main thread msg, so more ppl could see this, please. Ye don't have to credit me.

  • @ninja-naranja
It very much could be though. We can already be caught on fire, burn in boiling seas, and shocked by lightning, why not freeze in frozen waters?
Topic of ugly clothes aside, I still see no reason as to why we shouldn't have a icy biome.
It may be Caribbean styled, but it is still very much a game.

  • @personalc0ffee the fate of the Devils Roar sit's squarely in the hands of Rare. You cannot blame the player for their lack of interest in that region. That's down to Rare to get us back there. New and interesting ways... If we did get an ice biome the same fate would probably befall that. We would only have Rare to thank. Or blame.

The ashen outfits came after the Devils Roar was released. Plus, the ashen dragon is tied to Flameheart, not to the devils roar.
Should I be expecting a Transylvania update because of the Crimson Crypt set? Or a spider enemy because of the Wicked Web set? No, those both are just spooky themed. You see, the reason for the ice sets is the winter season, and the only reason you don't see that is because you want an ice biome update. Rare doesn't owe us anything just because we misinterpreted an emporium cosmetic.

How many people can say they actually bought the frozen clothing set?

Exactly my point. If you don't like the looks, don't buy it.

If anything the frozen set is like dangling a baited hook in front of the players faces-knowing perfectly well that there have been many people asking for a new biome. This isn't the first post asking for an icy wonderland and it more than likely won't be the last.

So ice-themed cosmetics are off limits because some people want an ice biome? That's stifling.

If we were to say for a second that an ice biome would be a perfect addition, it still wouldn't come to the game because it would take up more space and make the seas feel deader. If they could put 7 or 8 more ships in each server, then we can talk about what biomes could be added. Right now the devs would rather put stuff on top of the seas we already know, like the sunken kingdom. Make your case on that point. Otherwise, it's not happening.
