SOT players unable to see or hear my chat after temporary ban released.

  • Hello all,

I am playing SOT through Steam and have recently come off a temporary ban. Everything is working fine except for the fact that (now) no players in game can hear my voice chat, see my chat bubble or even see my text chat messages. Basically, players can see me but I cannot interact with them through voice or chat in either direction. They cannot see my chat (text, voice or voice bubble) and I do not see their voice chat bubbles, hear their voice or see their text chat.

This only started after my temp ban was removed and only affects SOT. All other platforms and games work just fine. Steam chat works, Discord no issues, Zoom no issues, Skype, other games, etc - no issues at all. Just SOT and I have verified countless times that no settings or hardware changed between the time I was playing before the temp ban, during the 72 hours of the ban or after the ban was removed.

Has anyone encountered this before? I have read an article or two mentioning this could be something on the Xbox enforcement side but I have gotten absolutely nothing but standard 'check your settings' from Xbox support.

Also, apologies if this is covered elsewhere in the SOT technical forums. I couldn't find a way to search the forums instead of reading each and every thread topic page by page in an attempt to see if this topic has been covered.

    Cheers

  • have you contacted sea of thieves support about it?

    Try these troubleshooting steps also

  • You might still have a ban on XBox which will limit your ability to communicate through voice/text? I think you can check status here:

  • @d3adst1ck This is the only conclusion I could come to as (literally) nothing has changed anywhere other than the 72-hour ban.

  • @wsurftvveeds Yes, it was the first thing I had done and the response was the generic troubleshooting links for Win 10, Steam and Xbox audio issues none of which are the issue for me as Sea of Thieve is the only game where I have this problem. This is (also) the only Xbox related game that I own or play (I do not own an Xbox.)

Deadstick - when I click on that link, what am I looking for there? I do not see anything that points me to any sort of status/checker for me to see whatever it might be from an enforcement standpoint.
    Thanks

  • Ok, so found this off the enforcement page and this looks/sounds exactly what I am experiencing:

    Communications suspension on Xbox 360
If you violate the Code of Conduct during communication activities on Xbox Live, we’ll temporarily block your profile from using all communication features for the duration of the suspension. However, you can still use the Xbox Live service and other features and apps.

Some of the communication features that are suspended include:

    • list itemText and voice messages

    • list itemVideo communications

    • list itemIn-game and party chats

For more info about the types of activities that can result in a communications suspension, see the Community Standards for Xbox page."

So based on another thread I've seen on this I did a little testing. I unlinked and logged out of my Xbox Live account required to play the game (even on Steam.) This is my pirate legend char that had the temp ban and no long is able to see/hear chat or text and other players cannot see/hear me.

I then proceeded to launch SOT again (through Steam) and used a different login and char that I have and proceeded to play using that character. Well, lo-and-behold, I could immediately hear other players, see their voice bubbles, see their text chat and more importantly everyone could hear me and see me. So, this clearly is NOT a technical issue on my end but rather some sort of Xbox communication setting on the Xbox side and specific to the character that had the temp ban.

  • @dr-awesome4460 also, I forgot to mention, as part of the testing I did go back and immediately logged into my 'normal' account and back came the communication problem.

  • i do not know exactly if this problem is related to your ban . A Friend of mine cannot join gamechat if he starts up the game in Partychat.
Sometimes it doesn't even work if he "normally" starts without being in a partychat.
i'm not going to say that it can't have anything to do with a previous ban, but i just want to say that there are other problems with the gamechat sometimes.

Personally , i find that a bit sad as the gamechat and proximitychat is worked out so good to " dive" into the atmosphere of a pirate game comparable with the time period of the Golden Age of Piracy.

Hopefully it will soon be worked out or be solved for you, i would advice to rise up a support ticket as the Pirates above told you.

Ok, I have resolved my issue related to this. With the direction of SOT support, they directed me to combing through the privacy settings buried within my Xbox account settings which appears to only be accessible from going through the Xbox app (which I did not have installed.) Once I installed the app, went into my account settings to the privacy section and checked the settings for xbox communications (allowed/everyone/friends/blocked) from everyone it turns out (somehow) my settings were set to friends only. I don't know how or why these settings were changed because I had never even logged into that before.

But, this is fixed now and it was related to my Xbox communication settings in the Xbox app profile settings.
