So do I need to run from every player I see?

  • So my partner and I just got the game last night and were playing it tonight, having a blast. We were finishing up a quest, our ship was still docked, when another player crew came out of no where and started attacking our ship, and killed us both. We were really having fun with the game before this, so is there a way to play without other people or should I just stop playing if I'm just going to get 1 hit k.o.ed? I'm not a huge fan of pvp, I'd rather just fight the NPCs, so to die immediately with no chance is really dumb and kinda makes me not want to play this again. and looking at other comments, this is why other people left as well.

  • @evekiclival931 honestly just keep your eye on the horizon I hardly ever come across anyone but if you're new and just trying to get your bearings practice cannon fire eat meat because it has health regen if you see a level 5 Reaper on the map don't put up and an emissary there are ways to avoid people together but after a while that just gets so boring I was in your shoes once but now I like encountering other players just to bring some randomness to the game because it does become very monotonous. If you're a sloop always sail in the wind and watch some tips and tricks on YouTube

  • In order to last in this game you have to be able to handle a butt kickin' from time to time and not tie winning to fun.

It's welcoming to all but all won't be able to handle it.
It's brutal and unforgiving out there and that's a part of the charm

You, along with countless other players, have cried about this already. Yes, we know you don't like being pirated.

This game was and always will be PvPvE. You're playing the wrong game. I suggest refunding the game if possible. If you can't get your money back, kick rocks because you did not do your research. You said yourself you're not a huge fan of pvp, so why even bother buying the game? Digging up loot for other pirates to potentially steal is fundamentally the game.

Good luck, and I hope you keep trying and learn from your mistakes. Don't be surprised when you find pirates that actually want to pirate.

  • So welcome to sea of THIEVES. There is no way to not run into other players. My advice is if you aren’t good at PvP or can’t fight, you need to learn or you are gonna lose a lot of loot. Learn how to properly sail with what boat you are on and play defensively. If you don’t want confrontation then keep your eyes on the horizon whenever possible. If you see someone keep an eye on them and if they look like they are coming then have a plan. Unfortunately the only way you are gonna get better at PvP is by participating in it. Watch some YouTube videos for tips and tricks and try the Arena. You will get better. The PvP aspect is what makes the game exciting. Your loot is always up for grabs until you get it in the hands of the trading company that takes it. Can’t be mad at pirate for pirating. It sucks I have lost plenty of loot before but I couldn’t be mad in the end. Also since this is your first time getting attacked, I will warn you. There are some very toxic people you are gonna run into in here. Ignore it. Some people need validation and to feel they are better than you for some reason in a video game. It’s hilarious. Good luck on the seas! You will get better with time!

  • Can you play in an isolated environment with only your partner? No, the game is an online sandbox.

Can you avoid other players if you want to? Yes, with some practice and skill you can avoid 99% of player interaction in this game.

Is it the best way to play the game, always avoiding other players? Not really, I suppose if you can't handle a loss from time to time then that might be the approach but I find that player interaction is the spice that makes this game.

Will every player interaction be a hostile one? Not at all, but the majority of them can turn that way very quickly. I recommend having a mic so you can more readily communicate as that can be the difference between hostility and not, but you should go into every player interaction potentially ready to defend yourself (or elect to take someone out if it ends up making more sense for you as the interaction plays out).

Will some players be vulgar and abusive via chat? Sadly, yes, as this is an online game and human beings can be absolutely aweful when they want to be it will happen. It isn't tolerated, though, and you are encouraged to grab a capture and report those who do this so that their behavior can be addressed properly (generally via bans). Be a good sport in both winning and losing when it comes to that.

And before we get to that point, are Alliances an extension of your crew? Nope, not in the least. They can be beneficial to both sides, but you can still attack members of your Alliance and betray them because we are all bloody pirates and we do what suits our whims.

Anyways, sorry you got pirated, but it won't happen every time and I certainly hope you don't give up. Always remember, like the Pirate Lord says when you first start off on your Maiden Voyage, it isn't about the Gold but about the Glory. So go have some adventures and build up your own epic path to Pirate Legend, success and failure alike.

See you out on the Seas!

  • @evekiclival931 there are good people out there on the seas but like everyone’s said here be wary! Be prepared for a battle or if you have to flee (from any player based ship) make sure you sail in to the wind as you will be more difficult to catch up with. 😁

  • @evekiclival931 sagte in So do I need to run from every player I see?:

...when another player crew came out of no where

Watch the Horizon, No ship comes out of nowhere.

This is Rule No#1 to avoid PvP .

  • @evekiclival931
First of all, as others already have said : Keep that eye on the Horizon , that goes for the both of you... Secondly , try to read how a ship closes is , is it cautious or just ran to you as a madman, the cautious one may be interested in an Alliance , the madman rammer just wants to fight ...

Don't think that you can't beat them , when you see a bold one coming to you get Cannon and chain balls , maybe some cursed balls as well and if they are too close ,give them hell , they will need to repair and miss a few boarding hands ...

If you can find a rowboat , then hatch it on your ship , load your loot on it , try to outrun or outturn them , and when the distance has grown and the waves are wild , then look at yer map where there is a convenient oupost and row towards it , let the mainship take a totally different route to lure the others away from your rowboat...

This may fail the first times as you need to get the feel of the right distance to drop but it has saved many of our treasures in our own pockets ... i assume you play in a sloop , yes it may look like the weakest boat as it has the smallest amount of cannons , but this thing can turn like a Spitfire , and big distances between you and them can be gained by outturning the bigger vessels...

Sea Of Thieves has easy to learn basics but it takes some time to become aquanted with all these thing and mauld it into a weapon ... Do NOT get encouraged if you get sunk , DO get encouraged if you don't learn from it ...

Give it a few weeks and those cuttthroats will swim between the sharks , i promise you that, Sir!

  • @evekiclival931

    Remember this:

And keep your eyes on the horizon, and then it's almost impossible for anyone to catch you.

I started as a new player in December, finished all Shores of Gold Tall Tales without getting sunk once, because of that wind direction guide, situational awareness, and watching guides.

Go spend a day watching tutorials, like by PhuzzyBond on YouTube.

When not invested in a long term voyage or not having a lot of loot, bring and accept conflict, or else you'll never learn.

Also, join open games, you'll notice new tactics and methods from your crew, but you'll also notice really dumb decisions by them, which is actually helpful, because it makes you remember what not to do.

And finally, as others have said, if your enjoyment is dependent on winning or not losing, this game is not for you.

Also, tell the people who defeat you "GG, WP." Being a good sport helps, even players who are initially toxic, will usually appreciate it. (I enjoy toxicity, though, haha, it feeds me and makes me more focused, and I don't see how anyone can't accept salt and toxicity as a fact of online competitive gaming.)

  • You're entering a land of pirates. Not all of them are friendly.

Always be aware of what is around you. Where ships are, how long would it take them to sail over to you, what are your blind spots (large islands, rocks, other obstructions blocking your view). Is there a ship parked a few islands away or trying to hide itself behind a rock? They could be swimming or rowboating over to you.

Don't get hyper focused on your voyage, because that ends up with "ships appearing out of nowhere". Always keep track of who is around you and how far away they are even if you don't think they are any threat. Ships don't appear out of nowhere, you just failed to notice them sailing towards you.

  • Do missions in the Roar. More volcanoes, less people lol. Keeping an eye on the volcano will help you learn to keep an eye out for others.

Also, for now at least, avoid the world events like Pirate Lords, Flameheart and Forts.

  • @evekiclival931

The answer is no you don't need to run. You have in essence three options, flee, fight or negotiate. Yet they also have the same freedom to choose how they want to respond in return, chase, fight, accept a truce or deny it. Everyone has the right to be the pirate they want to be.

Those that attacked you did not appear out of nowhere, you just didn't notice them and it is your responsibility to keep yourself safe. It is a PvEvP game so you will always have to play around the option of a fight breaking out.

Watch the horizon, spot those sails and decide how you want to respond.

  • Never run, and always line your cannons up to approaching ships.
Many will be opportunist hoping to have caught you off guard and gain an easy sink. If they keep coming full speed, the advantage is yours to deal damage first.
The other players, if friendly, will probably get close, but not too close enough, and show themselves to not be a threat to see if you wish to join an alliance with them. But always be weary of someone swimming with a keg.
As others say, your going to get sunk on this game. Happens to us all. You'll even be the player sinking others some day. Its just part of the game. The fact there are two of you on a sloop means your fully crewed on the easiest ship to keep afloat.
Never run. You'll be amazed how many times you win once you both gain your sea legs.

  • Should you run? No
    Don’t like pvp, fine run.

But you are going have to learn, Pirates are cutthroats or jack sparrow. Nice or bad.

Defend yourself or get this mindset, ruining your game because people are playing the same game as you.

Firstly the first mistake is on your part and that is yet again not researching on the game with video's from streamers and youtubers and reading reviews. In this age its no excuse to be * surprised * that there are certain mechanics in a game and act all confused when a simple google search could have avoided that but anyway.

Seeing as you haven't responded to you own topic i guess this is just to blow of some steam. Anyway like that has been said before avoiding PvP can be really easy as long you have someone to keep an eye on the horizon. Sure you can't avoid them all but so far as i am playing with my friend about 5%-10% was interacting with other players the rest of the countless of hours was just doing our PvE things without interruption.

Anyway coming from a player who does prefer the PvE aspect more I say the PvP element is what makes this game shine. The thrill of watching out on other players and being chased and fights is pretty exciting. Yesterday we had our first Athena steal and never had our hearts pumping with adrenaline that much before in a game. We noticed that there was a lot going on at the fortress of the damned and when we got there we saw a brig fighting a galleon. After our first attempt we failed to let the exploding kegs go off. But at the second attempt we saw that same brig who destroyed the galleon fighting a sloop and the kegs blowed up and i was able to snatch the chest of legends when the brig sunk and even though 2 players from the sloop where in front of me and still managed to lose them. Those are the moments that are just epic i say.

And later on in that same night we had our butt kicks by some players with Athena rank 4 emissary who seemed to play to much seeing their cosmetics that cost over 2 mil. And was still surprised how kinda childish they where. Well i mean when your an adult and giggling like a little girl with * hee hee hee gg * while they ambushed us while handing in our loot i say that was an odd pirate (luckily we just finished handing in the loot). But hey it happens and that is what is in the whole package. Sometimes you have good fights and sometimes you have people who act all childish.

Anyway either learn to deal with it and practice or stop if you hate PvP that much. But again you should properly research first before buying an online sandbox game.

  • Confidence and communication skills can go a long way in making more positive encounters.

Not every pirate can be socially adept, but many are.

Be vigilant, be charming, or be good.

  • It’s just part of the game. I like to lure people into a chase tho, get them to chase me for 30 mins to an hour and then sail into the Red Sea to waste their time. They get super mad sometimes and will send funny messages

it's a pvp pve game it's both and did you not read the description when you looked at buying the game? people attack you for many different reasons one is to steal loot another because they're poo people and one last thing you're at an island where they need to go to as well don't leave just because of a bad game sesh you should pratice pvp as well that's my two gold coins and also i lose loot too one day i was doing merchants but that's a story for tavern tales

  • I hate it when you are playing solo and doing tall tale missions.
People just sink you and move on without looking if there is any loot...
That is really annoying, and also 1 of the reasons i once stopped playing this game
now, i never play alone anymore
always doing fleets bc of those very annoying people
btw there is an pvp server, if people want to freaking play pvp they should go there..

  • @evekiclival931 I play this game almost entirely solo and really enjoy the risk of running into other players who might be up to trouble. It makes me want to play smart and work hard for the treasure I have earned. I think you really have to embrace the idea that you might lose the treasure you have found and the more treasure you can cash in, the more rewarding it is! I've also gotten good enough to be able to fight back against larger ships - even if I lose all of the loot, I still had fun fighting for what I worked for.
