Loot sinking too fast

  • If you get caught up in a rather long battle with multiple parties more often than not it is impossible to gather the loot from sunk ships since the loot will sink after a while.
Why does the loot not stay afloat for longer? What does it matter if it keeps floating, even for an hour?

    An example:
We were fighting a brig when a sloop joined the battle. We managed to sink the brig shortly after and all the loot ended up in the water. Now we are focusing the sloop. We also manage to sink this one but in the meantime the brig has returned (they did not spawn too far off). We manage to sink the brig again and win the battle. Sadly by this time all the loot has sunk and we don't get rewarded for our victory with some sweet booty.

  • @zjwear I think mostly to server lag from having more active objects. I'm not certain but I think that it's 15 minutes and a lower timer after being handled by a player. I wouldn't see a reason not to up it to 25 minutes though.

Floating loot is more resource intensive because it has physics enabled (it moves up and down with the waves and can be pushed when colliding with a ship), so having those items around longer takes more server resources. If you think of all the junk that ends up floating in flotsam spawns, or gets created because a skeleton ship sunk itself on a rock, and then to have that stuff staying there for an hour you can imagine how the seas would begin to pile up with loot everywhere.

Having loot float for really long periods of time would also eliminate any kind of failure penalty because you would have ample time to sail from anywhere on the map back to where you sank and have very little chance of losing your loot.

  • That why we have harpoons and rowboats.

  • 5 minutes is what you get - no more, no less. Get there in time, or you won't.
