Crossplay getting addressed next dev update!

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie i wouldn't worry about it. Litterally nothing would change if they put a optional crossplay option in the menu and had crossplay as default 75% of people wouldn't change it cause they dont care.

  • @himwhoeatstime no, your seas will be full of players that are using same balanced platform and control device. It's 6 ships per server, even if all the X ox players will be choose to connect to the platform base server you will still have many active servers and all will be be full of players.

  • @knifelife Yes, it was a terrible implementation. It was much too aggressive and was more like an auto-lock than a more subtle auto-aim like you see in some first person shooters. And it could be optional.

  • @natiredgals Maybe, maybe not. They might not know about it right away but after awhile hear about it and decide to change it. We wouldn't know until something like that actually gets implemented but if it does I fear it will split the community it more negative ways than what people feared The Arena would do. At least with The Arena there's incentive for people in both camps to try out the other game mode because of the transferring of cosmetics and progress.

This keeps the community together even if they're playing different game modes but completely shutting out a specific type of player because of the equipment they use, that splits the community up and that's concerning to me.

  • @flatflafel if they do provide an opt-out option it should be based on controller device and not by pc/xbox.

  • @marsmayflower I have no problem with that as long as it is bullet prof against working around it.

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie I think it’s the complete opposite, crossplay has done nothing but split the community and turned the forums into a place of constant arguments.

I personally think it will be amazing if everyone who purchased the game has a chance at playing on an even field.

We can go back to actually enjoying the game again and discussing upcoming content.

  • i think Joe shouldn't have tweeted that and just waited for the dev update to talk about it. People are expecting something that more than likely won't happen.

My guess would be, that something like this will be said:

We've heard the concerns, looked at our data, it's not as bad as some people are making it to be, however there is some difference between pc and xbox. So we're going to tweak this and that, monitor it again and we'll see.

  • @sir-lotus Probably, it’s what we had after the mega-threads before the comment was deleted.

  • @knifelife You're not wrong in saying that it's split the community here on the forums. However, it's split the community by viewpoint only. There's a difference between having two opposing sides on the forums with different opinions than actually splitting the community in game. The community here on the forums will always, no matter what we're debating, be divided. Whether that's PvE servers, cross play, what Rare should focus on next, bigger ships, legend exclusive content, etc.

While here on the forums we may have different opinions, we still are one consistent community in game. That's my point, if optional cross play becomes a thing then we'll be physically, not just verbally, splitting the community into two camps.

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie I kind of see what you mean, but at the same time is that truly the case.
I know tonnes of people who quit the game because they just didn’t feel like they had a chance.
So while yes I would agree with you to an extent, I would also say that a lot of players have been pushed out to.

  • @knifelife And I've unfortunately seen that as well. BUT! My hope is that Rare is monitoring these types of encounters between PC players and Xbox players and has been making tweaks based on what they think could help level the playing field. I think making additional tweaks to the combat system, like the February 6th update entails, is a better option than dividing the two types of players entirely.

Will it be perfect? No, but no system ever is. They can hopefully however get it to the point where most players will notice little to no difference when fighting a player of the opposing controller type.

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie Aye I can agree with that, ideally we would be able to have everyone together and have everyone feel like when they are beaten it was skill not hardware.

I’m just abit more pessimistic, on the whole idea that it will happen. But I do believe on Wednesday there will be a response more along the lines of what you are saying rather then the people advocating for crossplay.

I suppose only time will tell. :)

  • I'm an Xbox player, but I'd never play again if I lost my PC partner in crime! Couldn't have met him without SoT cos most games we play aren't cross play! I would sooner uninstall than go without The Great Dane @FakeLamselaar

  • The only way this will be decided definitively is with a data dump. Player counts, encounter statistics, weapon usage, etc... People are already jumping to conclusions and all Joe said was he would mention the topic in the next dev update :D

  • @knifelife Right you are my friend, only time will tell indeed. Looking forward to Wednesday! :)

  • @reedski Anyone in there right mind shouldn’t want crossplay shut down for good.
And if that is what they are advocating they are not doing it out of concern for balance they are doing it out of spite or stereotyping.

Crossplay shouldn’t be forced or turned off, like other games it should just be optional.

  • @knifelife I agree. Xbox players always wished to play with PC friends.

What I struggle to understand, now that we have it non optional, is why PC players do care so much about crossplay. It is the first multiplayer I play where I see PC player even care about Xbox players.

I think most are missing the point here. Crossplay isn’t going anywhere. They will either tweak it or give it a option to turn it on or off

The last known figures we have of the PC playerbase were that they were roughly 14% of total players, so the fear is that if the platforms are split then matchmaking will be affected. The game was not provided on Steam and there is a general stigma against the Windows Store in general, so I wouldn't expect the PC sales to be that great and since Rare/Microsoft don't release data there is no way to mine the data we can't confirm or deny the previously released statistics.

  • All of this is nonsense. All they said is that they've been talking about it and this thread comes up with all the typical arguments both for and against, without even bothering to wait to see just what aspects of it they've been discussing. Hearsay and rumour mongering run strife and common sense gets flung out of the window.

Whilst I think it's great that they've finally acknowledged the subject and have even progressed to the point where they're willing to share their thoughts on the subject, maybe it would be prudent for everyone to remember just how LITTLE they've said and not jump the gun and start making predictions.

One of the most interesting things I've seen so far in this thread, other than the initial subject matter brought up by the OP, is that approximately only 14% of players are on the PC. So just over 1 in every 10 players you meet out there on the seas are actually playing on PC... yet if you read all the threads on the forums, you'd be led to believe that the PC players are EVERYWHERE and ofc they ALL CHEAT, use macros and all the other stories you hear/read. Roughly 1 in 10... I think it's safe to say then, that the MAJORITY of double gunners, are actually console players :D

Happy sailing - and remember perspective, it's a wonderful thing :)

  • About time!, options are always good. I hope we get a toggle to have cross play on or off so I can come back to this game.

  • IF crossplay would be disabled, and the PC and Console players would be separated, im sure it will only be a question of time before new complaints will surface. The only difference is, that now they complainers can't blame PC players anymore, so what will be the next step. Some sort of underlying system/algorithm that rates player skill and separate players even more? Where will it end? The majority of the players are on console, so i personally dont think this will solve anything. People just think it will solve the problem, and im afraid separating players (of any kind) will not result in the things that they hope for.

Its simply a can of worms that we should not open... :/

  • I'm pretty sure it will just be them officially announcing that there will be Mouse & Keyboard support for Xbox in the nearish future, thus (hopefully) removing the biggest disparity between the two playing mediums.

  • @peskyookamiinu They have already said M&K will be coming to console.
However it will not be any time soon.

  • @knifelife Has it been in a Dev Update though? As far as I know it has only been in their stream (I think). I can't imagine them removing one of the features that big daddy Microsoft clearly wants in their big titles.

And honestly, I don't want them to. While M&K clearly have the upperhand, if console players spent more time actually figuring out a controller setup that works for them instead of complaining about PC players, we would have better console players who could hold their own against PC players. And I say this as an exclusively console player.

  • @needsmokes That day will come, when the games and consoles stop limiting users and each one chooses the device that he likes the most.

There will always be someone who has a "better position" than you, a controller with more buttons, a mouse with more sensitivity, panoramic monitor, better internet connection, more fps, etc etc. If we start to divide the community according to each case we are lost.

  • Finally though this is the best optional cross-play is awesome gives players what they want can turn it on to play with friends and turn it off when you're not smooth sailing folks glsd rare is listening!

  • @peskyookamiinu making a player use a m+k is not solving any issue fyi.

  • Actually a little upset, if they split up the playerbase Im going to lose out on playing with 95% of my friends.

  • @jesser92 I don’t understand what can be bad if RARE adds an on / off crossplay button in the settings of xbox players? Xbox players who want to play with PC friends could also play with them.

  • @jesser92 ya you guys don't read. It's going to be optional if they do anything. You can turn it off wala or you can leave it on wala this was advertised as a cross-play game it would stay as such

  • and we also must take into account that it might not be RARE's decision. MS has been on a big push for their Play Anywhere (XB and Win10 Crossplay) titles, SoT is one and was marketed as such. There might be a loophole Rare can use to get around it, such as making it optional, but I don't think it's going away entirely.
Personally, I can't tell what platform anyone is on by playing with them. I can only tell by my friends list if I catch someone idle in the XB App or they're always spawning in before me.

  • @marsmayflower said in Crossplay getting addressed next dev update!:

i can't wait to see the backlash from the PC crowd when they offer an auto-aim option for console.

I don't see why PC can't get auto aim too? Then it would be balanced, and if you say "we'll they can turn and get the target faster". All I say to that is what about the person who has their controller sensitivity turned up and turns faster than you. Is that balanced.

I think there should be no sensitivity controls, since you are so into balance.

  • @darkjedirebel said in Crossplay getting addressed next dev update!:

@pad3 it is because PC players see XBox players as their cattle. And Xbox players being a large group of the core players the PC crowd doesn't want to lose their easy money. When Xbox players have a choice. PC players will have to fight each other more and they don't want that. It changes the game for them. Bad PC players will start losing more to good PC players and they don't want that. With the Crossplay fixes and double gun fix coming there are many reasons why PC players are getting angrier. Arena mode and Private servers are other ways the PC crowd is being nerfed. PC just had way too many advantages they wouldn't admit so the devs let are letting it play out and exposing the unbalanced nature the game currently has. Coop used to be a thing in this game...ie. Meg update.
I think the devs have been trying to get some of that magic back. I used to have fun not knowing what to expect from another crew. Now people know exactly what to expect (a fight). The game has become shallow again because the type of gameplay most are engaging in is pvp. I don't treasure hunt or even use my shovel or fight a skeleton in sea of thieves at the moment. I'll jump on for about an hour or so sink a ship or two with some friends turn in their stuff and log off. It's getting kinda boring to be honest. If more people were cooperating in general who knows what kind of activities would become Popular. Things are changing soon though so I can only hope this game gets back into deep water with motivation to play in a variety of ways. Like it was in the beginning.

There is so much wrong with this, here:

So what you are complaining about is that it is more PvP at the moment? How has that got anything to do with PC players. You think all the PC players are doing is forming roving gangs to go out and look for Xbox Players. Let me tell you some of the most blood thirsty payers I know are Xbox.

You think Cross play will stop the PvP focus of the game?
I think you are making scrap goats out of PC players.

    Finally this:

You have just admitted that you are just as much of the problem as "PC players" you have been getting bored and just going out to PvP, you have lost a few times and instead of looking at what you might have done wrong you blame the PC players cause then you don't need to change or get better

    Good luck
