Are AMD Crashes Going to be Fixed by Launch?

  • Hi there Rare and SoT community!

Would just like to bump the topic of getting SoT to play nice with AMD. Just got my first freeze and crash during the Stress Test, which happened plenty enough during the Closed Beta. Enough so that I'm not sure I want to bother with the Stress Test. It's been two weeks since the Closed Beta, and while I did have hopes it would have been fixed it did take Overwatch near a month to fix their issue with AMD. As the title suggests I would greatly appreciate this issue not being present for the official launch of the game.

I would be happy with any sort of fix, even if I have to download a specific version of AMD driver.

  • Ahoy @azelous!

I was doing tests during the beta, maybe you are interested in this post:
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/27284/game-crashing-when-approaching-islands-or-after-about-an-hour-of-play/12

I sent a ticket to AMD about the issue, but they still have not said anything.

Could you tell me if you are using version 18.2.2 (last version)?
Edit: @SirioNDB has already answered me hahaha.

  • I have an RX 480 and I suffered a lot of crashes with the latest drivers - 18.2.2

I've had to revert to the only drivers I knew offered me a good experience in the past, the 17.10.2

    @El-Espectro-0 has posted it!

  • Thank you @El-Espectro-0 and @SirioNDB for the responses. I'll give all three drivers suggested a try.

  • @azelous

Please let us known what happens.

I am seriously considering never buying an AMD product after this. The few hundred bucks off doesn't justify all the frickin' troubleshooting I have to go through almost every god darn time.

  • @siriondb
I allso have a rx480 and now in the scaletest beta my pc reboots suddenly when playing. same for you? it did not reboot in the other beta or alfa.

  • I can confirm that after several hours of gameplay that the 17.10.2 drivers did not crash for me.

  • Using 17.10.2 and 17.11.2 both ended with a crash, here's to hoping improvement upon release..

  • I too wold like an official reply to this by the devs. I crashed 10 times during the stress test due to my amd drivers.

  • Would be nice to not crash with a fully loaded boat.

  • R9 290 no issues at all beside lag which is not related to AMD. So far im proud there where no amd issues what so ever.

  • R9 390x here. No crashes and I played for hours.

  • @azelous

I've just come across this article today -

    https://techreport.com/news/33286/sail-the-sea-of-thieves-with-radeon-18-2-3-drivers

  • @Azelous One of the devs told me to go in to Radeon settings>Gaming>Global graphics and turn "Shader Cache" off. This has apparently been causing the crashes. Also make sure to grab the new drivers, they are smoooth.

  • Same thing here.

Game deadly freezes all the time (about every 30 minutes or so) on AMD 280x. All I can do at moment is press alt+F4.

It was on the first closed beta in last month and now it happens again. Drivers ver is 17.something and now after update to 18.2.3 too.

RARE please do something or a cancel my preorder :(

So, what’s next? Our PC team is working h*****n getting the game ready for release. This includes security work, lots of bug fixes such as fixing launch and install issues, plus further compatibility work.

With lots of work still left to do, the PC team is focused on ensuring as many people as possible get the best possible experience of our great water. Smooth sailing everyone!

Please tell me that among the "compatibility work" is also working with AMD. I've been juggling with different drivers since I've been invited to the alpha in November and I just really want to play this game without freezes and crashes.

Tell me you will fix the AMD before launch and I will preorder the very same minute.

Good news! We have indeed made progress on this in the last few days. We're still working with AMD to get the new driver ready for launch, but we've two bits of information. This is not official, but here's a quick summary before I get the proper stuff written.

Proper info on this is coming very soon, as are hopefully proper fixes. As a result of our attempt to track this down, performance on AMD GPUs is temporarily a bit lower as we've got some diagnostics turned on.

    And new information:

Edit: And thanks for confirming that the latest drivers are still not secure. I am on 17.11.2 and the game does not freeze or crash.

  • I haven’t had a single crash on the new 18.2.3 drivers and my performance had been much improved. On a 270x and r6 cpu.

  • @el-espectro-0 wow that was a quick answer, thanks! Well, glad to see RARE is already work on problem. Preorder back in the game. Ahoy! :)

  • @minusculemoss48 Well, right now I prefer not to risk it, but thanks. (My pc is dying since a few weeks hahaha).

  • I've got an RX 560 and I haven't run into this issue at all, having played in pioneer sessions daily for a while. I'm on the newest drivers as well. Could be the 560 though since it seems no one in the thread is also using it.

  • I take this opportunity to mention some players who had the same problem so they can see the new information:

    @aosmiles @xPr3dalienx @valimore
    I hope this helps:

  • RX 580 Sapphire nitro + 8 GB, latest Driver, still random Crashes and or water disappearing. Tried all the above mentioned.

  • I'm running crossfired RX 480's in 4k on an i7 CPU ,and I get horrible flickering visuals like plants and things disappearing, water sometimes disappears or flickers on and off, and GPU driver crashes. Happened on both 18.2 drivers and the new 18.3.1. Hoping for a solid fix before release, finding the game unplayable as is atm with my setup which is rare.

  • Just bumping to confirm that the issue isn't fixed, I always crash somewhere between 10 - 60 minutes in on my 7850 no matter what my video options are set to. I did a clean install of the latest AMD drivers to day in hope of that fixing thing, I thought it did but I just ended up losing around 15 chests (pick up group didn't want to go back) as it was running fine for over an hour at a pretty solid 60fps then the screen froze and I lose it all.

I really wish they raised their minimum specs on the AMD side if this was a known issue as it's impossible to play the game if it crashes this frequently and there's no way to log back into a session so you lose all of your progress.

  • Still seeing the driver crash here every 10-60 min (AMD R7, RX480) even with newest driver (18.3.3) and lighting changed to Common.

Thought I'd try native res (4k) as it was playing in 2k. Played for a solid 4 hours without a single problem.

  • My game is still crashing, with the latest AMD Driver installed. Being 18.3.3 .
The game is still crashing with the "driver restarted" issue and water is still disappearing. I know this is an Unreal Engine Problem. The only developer who has made a patch is Bluehole for PUBGs, all other Unreal Engine Games will crash some time or the other. This is an Unreal Engine Problem, for some reason appearing since last christmas. As if NVIDIA launched a nuke at AMD. They cannot and I think will not solve the issue because they sell more cards to Ethereum and Bitcoin Miners.

I am not sure if I am going to hate Microsoft, the Unreal Engine, Rare or AMD for this. I am just deeply disappointed having spent 70 € for a game, that lands on my Unreal Engine Pile of unplayable Games, except for Playerunknowns, because they care for paying customers....

At the time being graphic cards have become unbuyable because of those miners. I have spent 320 € for my rx580, other than Unreal Engine related, having no issues at all!
I won´t spent 500 € for a c****y Nvidia card, because the equally good ones only start at that price. Plus my RX580 goes away for more than 400 € as of now.... The Bitcoin market is destroying PC Gaming.

Please Rare, care for your customers, the rx580 is not an uncommon card.

  • Lighting on cursed and disabling shader cache in Radeon settings did the trick for me. My game used to crash every 5 minutes it was literally unplayable. I did the steps mentioned above and it's all good now. Remember to download AMD Clean Uninstall Utility before you install the newest drivers.

@Samu3lMumm have you tried all of these steps?

  • Newest drivers that are "optimized for sea of thieves" still does not work. Had 2 crashes in an hour.

I'm now salty and not in the way I want to be.

  • @saltyseafox Even with the disabled shader cache and lighting set to low?

  • I'm trying too with the suggested settings now, it crashed twice after getting loot. Lost everything two times in 1h :(

  • I've yet to try clean installing old drivers, but everything else in this thread, including a clean install of the newest drivers, is still giving me freezing and crashing. Incredibly frustrating.

  • Still crashing for me too, it's really annoying :(

  • Seems like using minimum settings "solves" the issues, more like a temp workaround

  • That cant be it. There must be some sort of a setting that's making it crash. Hope they fix it soon its really annoying. Altho i will give it a go having nothing to lose...

  • I've tried all the fixes suggested on this page - newer/older drivers, lowering all the graphics settings, turning Shader Cache off, and I still get crashes without fail every 30 - 60 mins.
At this point its just utterly demoralising - I lose probably 75% of the crates I dig up through crashes.
