Monkey Island Tall Tale 1 Feedback (SPOILERS)

  • Rare,
I'm blown away! The environment was insane, and the story was fantastic! I loved how you guys not only combined the lore of both games seamlessly (as well as hinting at the fact that Monkey Island is concealed by the Shroud) but also how it effortlessly picks up where the East Egg in A Pirate's Life left off! The voice acting was phenomenal, and I loved every last detail you guys added to the game (both in the Tall Tale itself and where Kate Capsize is located in Adventure Mode)!

As some have mentioned on the Forums, I had to lean on Rare Theif to help me with a select few clues, but I honestly would consider those nitpicks next to the Tall Tale as a whole. I'm not much of a cliffhanger guy, but I really appreciate the fact that you guys decided to space these tales a month apart from one another; it gives me something to look forward to!

One thing I will suggest: I know you guys have said that Adventures will be coming back eventually. However, I think A Dark Deception should be included on the table where you vote on the quest(s) in front of Capsize Charters. To me, it's less of an Adventure and more of a prelude to the three Tall Tales!

You guys hit this out of the park! I had a blast completing the Tall Tale, and I am REALLY looking forward to the second tale next month! Thanks for everything, Rare!

I believe that the tall tales and the adventures should be separate.

I completed the new Tall Tale and I found out the imposter from the 10th adventure was LeChuck. He even transformed into the Pirate Lord. Anyone who joins the Sea of Thieves after today will be confused about that scene because the adventures can’t be replayed.

  • @coffeelight5545 Rare confirmed Adventures will be replayable in the future (including old adventures)

They didn't say anything about old adventures. They are changing the adventure format so that they will be replayable, but this only applies to future ones from today onwards.

  • @d3adst1ck wdym? They said in the podcast that all adventures will soon be repayable.

They said in the podcast that future adventures will focus more on gameplay and be replayable. They did not say that Adventures 1-12 would be replayable.

  • @d3adst1ck Ah, my bad. Shame..... So just the future adventures will be able to be replayed after the time expires? That doesn't make sense. I'm confused.

  • the single coins weren't shining for me and I skill issue'd for a few hours just spamming grab while walking along everything lol.

Rare has a way of creating 90s gaming vibes in modern gaming. That was monkey island, that was that era, it's just better mechanics, more immersive.

In general anyone can enjoy it but it's really a treat for those of us around a certain age.

I enjoyed the voice acting as well

It's incredible that these are part of their free updates, the quality and the experience at no cost is wild.

Super exciting time for Sea of Thieves.

    1. I totally want that dog toy on my sloop

    2. What happened to that skeleton that was mistreating the dogs was very very necessary.

    3. Chef uniform

Rare definitely needs to make the Adventures replayable. It’s possible that only future adventures will be replayable but Rare may make the past adventures replayable. Many people will be lost in the tall tale when LeChuck transforms into the Pirate Lord and mocks the Sea of Thieves pirates.

  • Rare said they put there heart and soul into this, okay... Then why is there only 1 hour of content...

5 hours of content if you can't find coins, like me.

It's pretty obvious to me (like pretty much all of the tall tales) they did implement their passion for the project.

Very cool design even if people don't dig the story imo

  • I can get behind the story, audio, visuals, all nice. What I cannot abide is months without any content and then teasing this to the extreme for one puzzle chain. Sorry it took you that long but I kinda envy that you got stuck for 5 hours. I was expecting something truly engaging like a monkey island lite or at least at the level of the hidden easter eggs for pirate's life part 1. Instead I got the most underwhelming tall tale/adventure I've ever done, I can't even explore all of melee island from trailer.

This does not fare well for future of game if this is the new standard going forward for length of content. I am just completely underwhelmed by this.

    Warmest Regards,

Organic activity in this game is far more about quality of overall experience than content here or there.

Example, Hourglass is not overall appealing to many players in the game but season 8 saw activity start becoming more consistent. Fotd started popping up all over the place. Even though many weren't interested in the content of the season they were experiencing a higher quality experience as a result of the content. Pvp pressure brought down, pve activity goes up.

Tall tales ultimately have no overall significant negative effect in the organic environment. They aren't bringing down the overall experience for people even if some don't enjoy the tales or designs of the tales.

Season 9 is what many have called a "low content season" but the activity is more consistent than it has been since probably the emissary update. That's because overall qol is higher for those that randomly adventure.

Monkey Island does no long or short term harm, even as a once a month design and even if the tales are an hour or two. Especially as instanced content which significantly brings down drama within design and experience.

  • I love it, it was fantastic, very easy 9/10 except having to get 200 PoE for that commendation. Oh that was pain. 1 hr and 30 min of pain and that was right before ending it

I loved that they got the current voice cast and all the references sprinkled throughout for those of us who actually have played MI.

  • Undoubtably one of my best tall tale experience, loved the atmosphere and the point and click style. Credit where credit is due, Rare nailed it.

    Corina is my fave

One of my favorite parts of the PotC tales is the bayou part of Captains of the damned, same vibe for me, I love it.

  • @wolfmanbush There hasn't been anything significant to bite our teeth into since pirate's life realistically. It won't affect me and the top 1 percent who have over 4k hours, but it will affect the vast majority of casuals that will only hop on when there is something to do that isn't literally grind something 100 times (Looking at you legend of the veil achievement). Thus leading to the slow death of the sandbox, a lot of people are going to come to game or back to play this as they did for every other major summer xbox announcement content drop that is marketed on youtube, twitter, etc.

Also, for something as heavily marketed as this to be this short is frankly depressing. I loved the new assets, the puzzles, everything, etc. but the incredible short length after waiting for some new puzzle dynamics for years is a joke and you know it.

    Warmest Regards,

  • i dont like the look at all,the scumm bar from inside looks so empty ,n the whole city reminds me to much on reused sot assets.

this is a old mod made with cry engine , lookin way better

alone the details in the voodo tent

  • @da-german420

No way that looks better than what we got and we’ve only seen 1/2 of Melee and none of Monkey Island.

    …. Must have patience. Help.

  • I have one complaint regarding the new Tall tale. Grog tolerance. My pirate should certainly be able to drink at least several tankards before getting dizzy and especially getting sick. I know those guys at the bar for years and I got sick after 1 mug, certainly not a good look for me and for the 'Sea of Thievers' no wonder they said 'Here pirates hold themselves to different standards''.

Also I want the more potent grog on me ship.

  • @zig-zag-ltu it did say it was “extra potent”.

  • @tesiccl Everyone else at the bar seemed fine, where as I had ''clean up on isle 6'' ^^

  • @zig-zag-ltu those pirates we had steal the coins from sure didn’t take well to it though ;)

  • @tesiccl Falling asleep is fine :D Making a mess is not.

  • As someone who was very skeptical about A Pirate's Life when it was first announced, and then ended up really enjoying it despite not liking the Pirates of the Caribbean movies at all, I was fully ready to love this. And it did not disappoint.

Rare made a spectacular theme park ride out of A Pirate's Life, and now they have somehow turned Sea of Thieves into a fully-fledged point and click adventure with The Legend of Monkey Island. The levels of reverence toward the source material, attention to detail and artistry involved are astonishing. Truly wonderful.

I'd also like to add that the choice to make it an instanced event for a single crew was a good call. I can't begin to imagine the mess this would've turned into if other players were allowed to visit Melee island at the same time as you. I do wonder if that will change in either of the next two Tall Tales, but for this first one, it really felt like I was playing a modern version of The Secret of Monkey Island with my friends. A stellar update.

I wasn't skeptical about Pirate's Life but I had no attachment to potc and I very much enjoyed not only the experience but how much effort they put in and how special the outcome was.

Pendragon giving Sparrow the big brother talk in the tavern

Calypso and Davy Jones working out their business and then the SoT crew showing up for the end fight

Blending the worlds together was done beautifully.

Even though I go into things looking for reasons to enjoy and/or appreciate them I still think it says a lot about their effort and commitment and talent to create experiences that are thoroughly enjoyable even for people that aren't typically focused on story content and more linear experiences.

I'm very much a story-driven, linear games type of player, and Sea of Thieves is pretty much the only multiplayer game I play. My main concern with A Pirate's Life was that, well, since I don't care about Pirates of the Caribbean, I didn't expect to care much about any Tall Tale based on it.

Although to be fair, I think those character moments you mention work better because of the Sea of Thieves characters than because of the Pirates of the Caribbean ones. They are the ones who shared their stories with you through the Shores of Gold arc, and ultimately they are the ones you care about in those scenes.

Jack Sparrow is just as unfunny in Sea of Thieves as he is in Pirates of the Caribbean, and the rest of his crew are barely present. The stories in A Pirate's Life rely so much on Sea of Thieves lore, characters and locations that it almost feels like they were already designed as a second set of Sea of Thieves-specific Tall Tales and then Rare just got the opportunity to bring Pirates of the Caribbean into the mix somehow after the fact. Definitely not something you feel with The Legend of Monkey Island.

That said, all in all it's an incredible series of quests and the execution is superb. I've played through them several times with different friends and I'll continue to do it. Some of the most spectacular moments you can experience in the game are part of the A Pirate's Life storyline. So quite the triumph, ultimately, and a really good precedent for Monkey Island.

I disagree, all content in game harms or improves the game. Pirate life had such significance, it saw the most amount of active players since the game's release. Adventures have all been abysmal, and i can say, at least for me personally, that with every adventure or mystery introduced into the game, I end up playing less and less. It's like you said, quality of overall content is based on exactly that, which is based on the overall quality of things added or removed per season as well. A tale that only has 1 really annoying puzzle chain over the course of 1 hour is not a good look for the game nor its future. It shows a lack of quality and quantity and for what? Why? Because the game's resource and staff were dived with releasing adventures and mysteries? That's not acceptable.

These past 3 seasons have been the dryest in terms of content. Overall, the only things that are actually good in terms of quality and quantity are the golden sand re model, and the captaincy mechanic introduction... everything else introduced has been mediocre at best.

Pirate life tales were great, it felt like sea of thieves reaching what it should be, like the introductory chapters for the game. But in this new tale it doesn't feel like sea of thieves at all, it lost or sacrificed a bit of what makes sea of thieves what it is, in return for Monkey Island and it just doesn't work as well.

and yet activity in season 8 improved organically and 9 has stayed consistent throughout

morale within the organic experience has improved even though some are showing signs of burnout and dissatisfaction in social spaces, the majority of the activity are largely satisfied, consistent activity and investment organically is an indicator of that

There is a situation where people are enjoying the experience more but that doesn't show as much in social spaces because they aren't regularly participating in social spaces. They are playing the game and living life outside of the social side of SoT.

An example, a bunch of content creators have done the "is SoT dying" types of videos this season and then their communities spread it around as if a few opinions from people that play the game all day in specific ways somehow negate the obvious activity on the servers being created by people that play this game for fun.

One of the most active seasons this game has seen in a least a couple of years and it's dying? it's in trouble? the devs are ruining it? the content isn't good enough?

Individuals will either like or not like something but the increased and consistent and varied participation overall in the organic environment suggest that more players are enjoying the direction of content, the qol within the experience.

As long as adventures avoid too much annoying rng and as long as they avoid a bunch of required cooperation they likely do fine overall, that's a business move and that's Rare's business but I haven't seen anything to suggest that those outside of the social areas have much of an issue with adventures, as long as they avoid the 2 things I listed above people tend to be alright with them from what I have seen.

Monkey Island has been great for morale, great for an opportunity for people to reflect on their time here, on their own stories, on the growth and improvement of the game, appreciate the efforts of the devs and the other participants here that make this all possible.
