The usual "skeleton ship scuttled" message didn't appear either; instead there was just ammo left. I was in the lower level repairing as a solo sloop when both ships sank.

Probably despawned instead of scuttled since you didn't get the message. Weird it would leave the ammo pouches tho.
They can despawn and sink back into the sea even in the middle of a fight. I think any skellies you kill will leave behind their ammo pouches when the ship despawns (sometimes floating in the sky, quite bizarre).
If you don’t get the “Scuttled skeleton ship” message, you didn’t sink it, and no loot for you.

@sn0kanon @pithyrumble ah I see. Well sorry for being redundant then. Was trying to help someone out. My slow self didn't realize the pirate wheel was options at first when I first started. I thought it was the upvote button 😆
@secret-vveapon No worries, had this happened a month ago it would’ve been extremely helpful, as I only just recently found out that the little ship’s wheel served any function beyond just being decorative. Definitely appreciate the attempt, I will always happily accept any help I can get.
Happened to me again and this time specifically, I noticed the skellyship was in shallow water when it happened. Don't know if that helps or if anyone else noticed that. I'm not sure if all of my instances have been that same circumstance, but I'm paying extra attention now that it's happened more than a few times.

I had it happen once again in the middle of the ocean, and none when I was playing with someone.
RE: @pithyrumble @sn0kanon it's not despawning as it normally would. I see the ship sinking animation with the music, but then... no loot.
This time I was also in the lower area of the sloop repairing with the sinking ship out of sight.
Not sure if that may be what triggers it, maybe @secret-vveapon can corroborate this.
