Pvp vs pve (private servers)

  • @bloodybil said in Pvp vs pve (private servers):

Private servers without progression will be a great compromise that will be the best middle-ground to everybody. A way for lazybeards to enjoy the story and the game without having to experience their crippling fear of other players, while giving them an incentive and a carrot on a stick to lure them into going out a tiny bit of their comfort zone to earn rewards, and having them interact with the regular player pool and be part of the ecosystem that the game is based on.

Are you really afraid there won't be incentive enough for new players to join your server, or are you more concerned you'll be matched more with aggressive PvPers and your game won't be as easy anymore?

  • @xx-mirth-xx

Yea that's kinda what I expected if it happens. Host a realm or something. Even if the leader needs to be on it's fine 😁

  • @bloodybil do you think that if they did private servers there would still be a way of having to complete tasks to unlock cosmetics since that's all there is or would they all be available from the get go?

Why would people risk losing loot, especially while doing bigger and riskier voyages, if they can hide away in private to do the exact same thing? Is the concept of risk versus reward that hard to udnerstand? Are you really that afraid to play the game how it was built and balanced? Are you so terrified as to potentially lose to other players?

Pretty sure both currencies and commendations would and should be unavailable. Again, seems like a reasonable compromise to give an option to paly the game without worry, at the risk of progression. Think of it as a practice mode!

I'm really curious about this. Why do you care if someone you don't know plays a game and enjoys themselves? If someone played on a private server/realm and earned all the gold and flags, that literally has zero effect on you. Why does that bother you so much? Again, the whole point of asking for PvE is they don't want to play with other people for whatever reason. Not a "practice" session, they don't want to play with people they don't know.

  • @bloodybil if they did decide to do that, I would really like to see them add a way for us to unlock more lore within the game, maybe backstories for the legends of the kraken and megalodon etc.
Defeating them would unlock lore as well as cosmetics and would be a satisfying experience for those that want pve.
probly a dumb idea to most but I would enjoy it and I also enjoy pvp as well.

  • I love the feedback you guys but I'm struggling with understanding the progression part...

If rare released private servers and said "pay $50 a month to play by yourself or with friends" you paid and found out you get no rep, gold or commendations what is the point? The game is literally about colle ting gold, rep and commendations.

The sheer fact that you are paying extra money to run your own server should unlock all the same abilities as anyone else.

I feel like saying "fine, have your own server but your not allowed to do anything" is no different then "go play another game" lol

That's where I was saying rather than earning gold/doubloons, you would work towards unlocking lore and cosmetics by completing objectives/challenges similar to commendations. still making the experience rewarding and fun

While it's a little bit about this, players do care about how they earned cosmetics. It's meaningful. The real issue is that Rare most likely doesn't want to incentivize players to play in PvE servers entirely. Sea of Thieves is a PvPvE game, that is how it is designed. If all the PvE players go into their own corner and all the PvP players go into theirs, it's no longer a PvPvE game. The entire concept of SoT could be radically changed.

I feel like there will always be players who will enjoy both sides of it though. there are days where I will seek out pvp encounters, but other days where I would like to journey/quest without having to worry about others

  • @dieseld145

They should do that in the main game too anyways 😁 gimme some stuff to grind to earn more stuff. I own almost everything in the game and have over 5 mil! Only things locked are arena items 🤯

Exactly! That's why Sea of Thieves is a PvPvE game.

    It's not a PvP game.
    It's not a PvE game.
    It's not an RPG
    It's not an FPS

It's a FP PvPvE RPG CYOA Sandbox.

I agree completely, idk if you've ever played Hunt showdown but they have a book of monsters where when you kill a specific number of said monster you unlock more lore about them, would be really cool to see something like that in sot

Ok, I get that, you worked and earned your cosmetics... that makes sense. But why do you care how other people earn their cosmetics? It literally has zero affect on you.

Also, yes, we know it was "designed" as a PvPvE game (for the 5 millionth time). That's why I brought up Elite Dangerous earlier. Exactly the same thing, and you can play it by yourself. The game will succeed or fail based on how good a game it is, not if they add a "private" mode or not. SoT is a GREAT game and it will do just fine if they add PvE.

When they first announced it didn't they say it was more of a pve game with a chance for pvp encounters though? I'm not going off of anything specific that's just what i remember.

  • @xx-mirth-xx

Indeed if they made specific PVP and PVE servers there would be a huge change in gameplay. But not all people are willing to pay for a server, it's a select group. Casuals that play once or twice a week wont pay. The kids wont pay. The pvp and the streamers wont. Only the die hard pve will or the pvp who wanna Duke it out with their friends. I'm guessing only up to 5% of the community will pay and it's nowhere near enough to ruin the game. Also like any subscription services they will end and once the die hard pve got bored they will cancel the server and come back 🤷‍♂️ no one wants to pay forever it's not warcraft lol

There has never been any talk whatsoever of paying any cost to partake in a private server though.

You get to play for free, at your rythm, enjoy the scenery, at the cost of no progression to go with the absence of risk. Seems quite simple really.

As long as there isnt one for the ghost meg lol played almost every day for 2 years lol I have seen 6 or 7 ancient skelle and a chest of wonder lol the meg is fake 🤪

I would never in a million years expect them to let us host our own servers and not charge. $50 might be high but I cant think of any game ever that you can have your own private server and didnt pay something!

Yeah, informed speculation. Adding private servers doesn't kill games. FO76 died long before they added private servers because it was a bad game. PUBG added private servers and did fine. My statement is based on all the other games that are similar and have public and private multiplayer, and there is zero correlation between adding private multiplayer to a game and "killing" said game. This was in response to the whole idea that adding private multiplayer will "split the community and ruin the game for everyone".

You point out that some devs have said they don't want PvE. Ok, you're right about that, some devs don't want PvE. But if you turn around and then say "so it will never happen" that's speculation. You don't know. Devs don't always decide how a game changes over time. They also said that these "private" servers are coming "mid term" probably meaning its quite a bit before they will even start to plan what they will look like. Making any statements about what these server will/won't be now is pure speculation.

OK, but I've seen your posts about "quotes" and then when I ask you for the link, you give me something where the person doesn't say what you "quoted". I don't really care either way if they add private servers or not, but looking at everything we know so far objectively, there is no way to tell at this point if the private servers will be available to everyone, or if there will be progression.

No I don't think I am a lead dev. This is an interview with one of them though!

Joe: We know that for multiple reasons players will want to come together in the world. Whether that’s to have a competition together or to make up your own game modes and mess around or record your own machinima or whatever, there are reasons people would like access to a private world a private server or something. Definitely looking at that, definitely looking at how we can bring that in. But the number one thing we have to consider with that is like, PVE farming, gold stuff, and all that, that doesn’t quite sit right with us.

An interesting video of him as well talking about how private servers would mostly be for community events and content creation.

Seems quite clear to me that when those server come, it sure won't be to bypass the whole premise of the game which is to take part in a shared world where anything can happen and where payoff scales with the risks of your adventure. But don't take my words for it, take the lead dev's, unless you are a lead dev yourself and know more? You aren't a lead dev, right?

  • @rowge-gaming best of both worlds I would probably do the same depending on mood and who I am playing with

  • @tubiansayne

No one cares about private servers if the servers have 0 progression.

If there is any type of progression then players would never touch adventure. The same thing happened with Elite Dangerous. Players would farm the PvE server, get everything they want, and then would never touch the regular game.

The game thing would happen here. It would also split the community even more.

I'm not going to sugar coat it but your post is pretty biased and it shows. You try to seem like a voice of reason of both sides but your post is anything but.

To the pvpers...why constantly say "go play another game", "omg everyone server hops or red seas when I'm coming" etc?

This comment shows that you don't understand PvP or understand the reason why PvP is important to the game. I could do the same with PvE players.

"To the PvEers....why constantly say "Leave me alone I don't have any loot I don't care about the game at all and I'm completely selfish because the only thing I care about is myself and no one else" etc?

Rare had discussed Private servers but they also stated that they don't want players running to private servers to gold farm or progress with no risk. They understand what would happen to the game if they ever implemented private servers and its probably why they haven't done it yet. So lets play out a scenario

Rare released Private Servers with 0 progression.

Now instead of PvE servers flooding the forum, we will instead get posts of "RARE WE WANT PROGRESSION IN PRIVATE SERVERS!!!" - Players will kick and cry and scream until they get progression in private servers.

That is probably the biggest reason why they haven't done it yet because they understand the potential flood gates opening.

Again, if you don't understand the importance of PvP for the world of the game then you are pretty biased.
