Generous Gift Frustrations

  • So I've been trying for about a week now to finish off the commendation for giving away gifts. All I have to do is give away 3 more generous gifts; considering that is 30 doubloons to whoever hands them in you wouldn't think that'd be hard.
Believe it or not, it's been impossible for me. Getting the gifts is easy, 1 or 2 quick runs in the Ancient Isles and I've got 'em. Head on over to Reaper's Hideout hoping someone is there who'll take 'em and nope. Here's what I've encountered.
A galleon, that attacked and sank me while I'm telling them to take it all. After respawning and sailing the seas for another hour, nothing, no turn in. We were right there, almost at the island.
A brig that fired off a guy to the island. The gifts were right there in front of the Mysterious Stranger. I also brought a Reaper's Chest to the island, hoping to attract some attention. Buddy kills me, lights my boat on fire. I respawn, hide in the bushes and wait. Didn't hand anything in; didn't even take the Reaper's Chest. I wait another hour but the only ship I see is the same brig.
I've tried chasing other ships down, but no one ever stops for me. I've left them on the island and quested for another 2 hours; nothing, never got turned in.

Anyone else having trouble getting these turned in?

  • I also needed three, I'd left them at the island for an hour or so, went back to check on them and they were gone. Unsure if they despawned or someone took them away.

Went and got three more, dropped them off at the Mysterious Stranger's feet, when a sloop with two brand new players (you'll be able to tell how I know they were brand new, later in this story!) rocked up to Reaper's Hideout. They then proceeded to take the Reaper Chest I left and the gifts, then head to Golden Sands to try and sell them! xD

I watched on my map table as they parked at an empty pier, then they headed to the Gold, Skull and Merchant NPC's with the Reaper Chest. When that hadn't worked, they then went back to their ship. After a couple of minutes of not moving (during which time I presume they were Googling where it had to be handed in), they finally handed it in to Jim, but when I went to Golden Sands, the gifts were just on the pier.

Thankfully, when I tried the next day, the three I left got handed in within around ten minutes of dropping them off. It was such a relief after the previous days shenanigans!

Hang on in there, your luck will come!

  • I think my wife and I would have had much more trouble with this if we hadn't happened across someone on a sloop who was about to stop playing. I took over his ship and we had two crews to work with! The down side then was that meant we needed twice as many gifts to hand in. Hard work but worth it.

  • I also see lot of players dont know where the reaper hideout is or what it is and try to turn it in at outposts and just leave it behind and log off.

They should have kept it easy and clear by turning in at any tavern mysterious stranger.

  • @ruigtand-nl I reckon the Reaper's Hideout will be important in the next update and Rare are trying to familiarise players with the island.

  • @edzedd

At the moment i wish i could go back to the previous build.

I had endless fun with ashen chest en key voyages.

Now they overcomplicated it and i see i no longer bother with those chest and only kill the skellies for a skull.

Dont really like the gift voyages atm.

Im doing normal athena's again 🤷‍♂️

  • Finally finished this today after many, many, many hours of waiting, frustration, ships sunk, getting killed and more.
Server merges, gifts despawning, cruel, lying and ignorant pirates, well we all know the story.
After what have been many arduous previous tests this turned out to be very taxing.
Who would have thought it would be so hard to give things away, a sign of the times perhaps?
Anyway at last it's over, but please Rare & Co, don't make it so hard to be kind and generous next time.

  • Yarp, i need a lot more than just 3 but have totally given up on getting it done in all honesty.
All i have been trying to finish is the recent Tomb's, i need Tomb 1 but alas after a few hours each day doing nothing but Key hunting an opening chests i have yet to see it.

  • I have left some humble gift that was turned in, like 7.
The rest was turned in by some 3 new guys, from 2 different sloops that didn't really know how to play.
Overall we had a good time, where they learned the ropes from 2 old legend.

Even though I had a good time, Im not a fan of forced friendly game play. I was just lucky for what i can read.
but since Im done with all the gift, I dont pick them up, im just after the skelly lord kill.
But if I where in the area or saw somebody with the reaper flag/chest on reapers hideout, I would go there just to help out.
But that's just me, but I have 7-8k dubloons, an I havent farmed them, so for other that have more, it's not really worth any time other than the good deed

  • I got my own commendations done for turning in the gifts, but unfortunately, I have also given up on the ones for getting another crew to hand them in. I've tried everything mentioned in this thread, multiple times, but just can't get anyone to hand them in. I've put gifts on the table at Reapers at the start of my play session, and go for 3-4 hours and nobody had ever turned them in. I played not long ago with a very nice friend here from the forums, and we tried as well. We left 5 gifts on the table at Reapers and even sat there with the Reaper Flag up on our ship to bring added attention. No luck during our gaming session of getting anyone to turn one in..

I wouldn't mind so much if they were not time-limited commendations, but it is a little disheartening when they have a time limit on them and you spend hours trying and just have zero luck lol. 🤷‍♀️🎁

  • Yeah it is hard work.

I gave some to a Brig Crew a few days ago and they left the reapers hideout without selling them, so I followed them to an outpost at which they went to each of the traders (gold, souls, merchant) trying to sell them. So at this point I had to say "NO" "Follow me" then took them to their ship, and circled the reapers island on their map and they just faffed about so I just left them to it.

Others that I have tried to offer presents to panic and kill me.

When I leave them on the table they never get sold.

Stuff like this is entirely why commendations like this are tedious, annoying, and don't need to exist.

They're barely realistic commendations with the actual playerbase because half of the time people don't care about the content, aren't educated enough on the content to even know what to do, or simply don't even care to know.

You end up wasting more time than it's worth spending trying to chase downand teach, or persuade people to actually help get it done.

  • @tre-oni 100% agree. Commendations like these make me and my buddy server hop till we are lucky enough to get on the same server to do theses. Not fun Rare...

  • We gathered a large amount, then approached low level looking players. Allowed one onto our ship and took them there. Did this a few times without any issues.

Best advice is to get 20+ gifts. Make it incredibly rewarding for them to go with you

  • Oh this is fun i unloaded the loot on reaper hideout and all supplies in the rowboat.. put up reaper..
5 min sloop comes firing so i scuttle and play music on the beach with the loot and they kill me ☠

Another great experience 🙆‍♂️ and succesfull delivery 🥳

  • It's quite tedious. I spent about 15 hours yesterday going between the outposts, forts and reaper's hideout dropping and resetting (in case they would despawn) the generous gifts. Few of my gifts got lost, but later on reappered, I guess the crew which picked them up got back eventually, so nothing was wasted. During my long session of fearing server merges about 4 crews (1 crew was fishing near it, but I got them there) stopped by the table to turn the gifts in and there were hours of waiting in between each - even tried asking people on ferry but EU has issues with languages...

The idea itself isn't bad, yet even though the gifts are quite rewarding, not many players actually do the event. In my opinion 1 generous and 4 humble gifts would have been more than enough.

  • @partyinsanjuan I completed them over a few sessions. As I approached the Reapers Hideout I put the reapers mark up to show everyone I was there and then left the gifts on the table. Had to wait a few minutes, but each time another ship eventually approached, sold my gifts and asked me to sell theirs.

Obviously it won't work every time, but it feels like the best way to get them sold.

  • Tonight it also worked for us that was nice a sloop came and we give all gifts to them then they handed it over to us to deliver so they got the commendation 🙆‍♂️ i got them finished already myself and only need skellie bosses but i still try to gift them to others because it are gifts 🤷‍♂️

  • I've had verry little trouble getting the gifts turned in. I just approached other ships, Speaking trumpet in hand, declaring my intentions and handing the gifts when we got close, left a crewmember for possible instructions to get to the reaper hideout and got the commendations without trouble.

  • So My crew and I put between 50-60 gifts on the table and tried for hours to get people to come to the island. Other crews didn't believe us even though we wouldn't attack and they would attack us or just run. I finally convinced a lone sloop player to come there. Once we arrived all of our gifts were gone and we had zero progress on the commendations.

We wasted about 6 hours of our time.

This has happened with other things like Forts and what not but this is a timed commendation and it really kills the idea of sailing for them again.

One of our crew dropped out and came back in...not sure if that had anything to do with the gifts disappearing. If so, Rare needs better tags in their code for items. Assuming they use tags when a player picks them up.
