Sea of Thieves became the #1 most watched game on Twitch overnight and is now discounted by 50% in celebration!

Yes, Sea of Thieves beat Fortine and the like overnight and to celebrate this impressive milestone, Microsoft reduced the game by 50% on their store!

At the same time, Sea of Thieves Twitter account reached 250k followers:

Of course it remains to be seen whether its ascenssion will continue. In the meantime, you have until the 31st to bring your friends or family who don't have the game yet, to get your grog and celebrate all together! šŸŽ‰

2019 starts very well and more awesomeness is coming in the coming months with hopefully some nice reveals during the Inside Xbox show on February 5! ☠

  • @skulliah Congrtualtions Rare! Your hard works being noticed and is paying off. I’m happy for you!

An even happier you gave the long time members a nod, stop it or you’ll make me blush :P

  • Not to diminish this achievement, but this is only obtained when all four big streamers stream this game.

    1.Ninja

    1. Summit

    2. TimtheTatMan

    3. The Doc

Right now it sits at, 24th with a little under 10k viewers. League holds consistent numbers with the #1 Spot at 220,000 viewers.

  • @Nabberwar

Of course it's mainly because of the big streamers who joined the party lately but it's still an awesome milestone knowing that this is also the first week after launch Sea of Thieves get a lot of exposure on Twitch! The Beta and launch periods stay the best with their peak at 200-250k viewers, but this week beat the big update periods!

I believe it's not just because of the newcomers but to the entire community with also the long-term players who have been supporting the game since the beginning! The game wouldn't be there without them! So, congrats to Rare and all the community!

  • Yes congratulations. Let’s hope the sale brings more pirates and better players to the sea.

The success is due to Rare’s efforts to deliver us a better game and to all the pirates that have stuck around since the beginning. Pirates who have loved the game for what it was and still is, even with some of the shortcomings still needing to be resolved. Not for the sudden popularity of a few that have come along now promoting it for mostly the wrong reasons.

  • @x-crowheart-x

I don't really know all those streamers and I'm not here to judge anyway but it's a beginning like everything. Of course it's to Rare and us the community to keep the toxicity out of our lovely sea but this will help to bring some exposure to the game for the coming weeks and probably new streamers will join later.

It looks like these new streamers are mostly non-European streamers, hence this decline in popularity during the day here in Europe.

We will only know in the long run :)

  • @skulliah

It is not really the beginning. Just a leg on the journey. Simple observations really. Same as many others have been pointing out for weeks now.

Mostly the efforts of one person that has been bringing the wrong things to the sea. The others are just because they were losing vanity points. Regardless you always have something to say that I look forward to reading. Keep it up! Like I said just solid observations. We can leave the final word to when the last cannonball lands.

Thanks for the post mate! Happy sailing!

  • @skulliah I'm so happy for them. It's truly well deserved. May their success stretch bigger than the Sea of Thieves. Bring out the grog! šŸ»

  • @x-crowheart-x

I can understand and I may agree on some points but while streamers might be able to influence viewers, I think it's a bit unfair to judge and pretend their whole communities are playing and behaving the same way. It's impossible to know and it's putting a label on people just because they're watching a streamer.

Everyone is welcome to the Sea of Thieves, there's no need to be a broken and split community. If you see players being toxic in-game, then there are tools to report them, regardless if they're fan of X streamer!

You also have to see the silver linning in it, making the double gunning popular somehow forced Rare to fix it.

Anyway, it's a controversial subject and there are enough threads about it and maintaining this discussion is just feeding the trolls. Let's just enjoy the fact that Sea of Thieves reached an impressive milestone thanks to the whole community!

    Cheers matey :)

  • @skulliah This is an incredible milestone Rare! Well done! Well done indeed! I've been following this trend the last week or so and I've been bombarding my crew with updates over social media whenever something big like this happens. I've been absolutely in love with this game since it launched in March. It's been my main game since then and I don't see that changing any time soon. Heck, I spend more time on the forums than I do playing other games!

Grog all around Rare! I'm incredibly excited and looking forward to seeing what 2019 brings to the seas!

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie

Some of us have found a lovely home in the game and here on the forum :)

  • @skulliah

Again I am not judging anyone. Not pretending either. Never do. No assumptions. Never make them. It is what it is. Good and bad.

Just FYI I think most will disagree that everyone is welcomed. No one wants bullies, toxic players, or trolls. Sea of Thieves at times can be overflowing with them. More so recently with this success. Again it is what it is.

    Cheers!

  • @skulliah And it's a lovely home indeed! I so much look forward to helping this community continue to grow. Rare has become one of my favorite developers of all time simply because of their passion for their game and their community. It's fantastic that they're receiving the credit they deserve.

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie

It is indeed, and it's probably just one among many others to come! :D

  • Nice Rear, thanks to exposure on twitch, xbox gamepass and other media the sea's filling with new pirates like myself. And I love the game from day one. There is some issue but the game could never be without them.
Thanks to all streamers for making awesome content that brings in new people and other streamers. So the game could grow in future.
Have a cup of grog for this celebration.
    Happy sailing fellow pirates.

  • Looks like Shrouded Spoils really did the trick, bucket loads of new people are now playing/watching the game!
    Shrouded Spoils

  • @nightuniform208

    Welcome on board matey! :D

  • Wait SoT finally beat Forknife? Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

  • Can you gift games to people on the MS store?

There's still a few hold outs that I know. But if I bought them a copy they'd be obliged to play.

Like the tentacles of the mighty Kraken SoT will drag them into its depths, never to escape.

  • @boxcar-squidy

Yes you can gift a game or an app on the Microsoft Store, you just need to select the option 'buy as a gift' :)

It's relatively straightforward, you just enter the email address of the person you're sending the gift to, and they'll receive a code and instructions on how to use it. I think if you are doing that on Xbox you'll also have the option to send items to someone's Gamertag :)

    Cheers!

  • @skulliah Excellent.

Selecting candidates for an intense, life changing and chronic case of video game addiction as I type this.

  • @boxcar-squidy

It's a pirate life for all of us! šŸŽ‰

I think there's more to being part of the community than just firing up the game and playing. I don't know if you've ever worked somewhere that there is seasonal tourism like a holiday resort. The guests aren't the community, they change every week, it's the staff and the locals that form the community, the people that are there long term.

That's how I see SoT. The bullies, trolls and toxic players come and go. The people who stick around and make funny or positive contributions are the real community. Whether that's putting out videos, offering feedback on the forum/reddit, streaming, writing up guides or just sailing around and doing something with other crews that enriches their experience of the game (even if it is only enriched through the thrill of combat)

That does mean that streamers are part of the community too. Or at least that they will be, if they stick around. They should be welcomed with open arms.

Toxic players and bullies aren't really interested in trying to contribute meaningfully to the community. Their goals are more related to personal gratification at the expense of others. I don't really see how Rare can allow us to have the freedom that we do have in SoT without also giving trolls the freedom to be trolls.

So there will probably always be a degree of toxicity in SoT because of the freedom to play how you want to that it offers. The community itself is a really nice bunch of people though. I don't agree with the entire community all the time but I have a fondness for everyone.

  • I dont know about this game streaming community. Is this a mixed community or merely a pro gamers paradise for shooters? What influence to expect? A wave of fresh pvp pirates or just more players of all sorts?

  • @boxcar-squidy

I agree that bullies, toxic players, and trolls are not part of the true Sea of Thieves community. They never will be.

I also agree that the core community is a great bunch of people. I have said so many times they are the real tried and true pirates.

The new streamers are here to earn vanity points only. They may be sailing the sea, but they are not and will not be true pirates.

    @Ruigtand-NL

One streamer started playing the game recently drawing in viewers from other streamers. He has had an abusing, offensive play style. Lots of toxicity towards others. He has greatly exploited the double gun issue.

His overinflated ego has him constantly switching his double guns back and forth all the time to show everyone he can do it. He trashed the Pirate Code. There has been a growing number of players emulating him. Thus the rise of posts calling on Rare to do something about it. Now they are. In in a couple weeks hopefully this legion of trolls will be neutered if Rare nails the combat fixes.

The other late coming streamers did not like losing their flock of devoted disciples and worshipers. Their injured vanity droved them to break down and play the game they snubbed in the past.

  • @x-crowheart-x that's a pretty cynical take on it, but what you are saying is correct.

I don't think Summit is all toxic though. He talks trash (which I dislike) but that just seems to be an American thing. I mean even their President talks trash to people these days. He can be pretty wholesome too, I don't think he's a bad guy. He does what he needs to do to bring in the views. I've watched some more of his streams since he became a frequent topic of discussion and he's pretty tame in terms of toxicity for the most part. He has even been nice to a new player or two on his streams. I'm starting to think my initial dislike of his style is more of a cultural thing on my part than down to bad behaviour on his.

He does double gun and that's an unfair playstyle in my view, mainly because it's not a fair fight, just whoever shoots first. Rare are taking the nuclear option on that one very soon though, so if he wants to use it to bring in the views till then, he's in his rights to. It'll be interesting to see if he has any other tricks up his sleeve or if he can only win when he double guns.

The rest of the streamers did flock to SoT because it was the new big thing on twitch, but that's literally their job, I can't hate on them for doing their jobs, particularly not while I'm studiously avoiding doing my own job by posting on here.

  • @boxcar-squidy

It is not an American thing. It is just a very sad aspect and false statement of society these days. It is not and never will be what it means to be a true American. Far from it. Just like those who also unfortunately sail the sea with the rest of us will never be true pirates.

    Happy sailing!

  • @x-crowheart-x oh I didn't mean to tar all Americans with that brush.

Its just something that I noticed first from American gamers, sports people and recently politicians. They seem to have a culture of talking abusively to one another and it seems to have become the norm.

Dunno if it's America, internet culture, social media or what, but witty banter seems to have been replaced by toxic abuse to the extent that going on a bigotted tirade against an opponent is just accepted as normal, reasonable discourse.

I find it very difficult to judge individual participants without examining the context within which they are trying to operate. So, with Summit, I personally dislike trash talk, but if trash talk is expected of him by his audience, and is the norm amongst his peer group and role models, then it is at least understandible, even though it remains undesirable.

It should also be unacceptable and never tolerated.

  • @boxcar-squidy said:

Yes, you can put in their email or you can send it to yourself and share the code with them, which is what I did so they don't miss it.
    This is what you get:

PS you can put whatever you want as the name of sender if you want to remain anonymous.

One of us, one of us, one of us....

  • @x-crowheart-x This is super dramatic, and everyone knows who you're talking about.

  • cant really say I watch streamers, think it's a lazy platform, can see on the rate he spits out video's on youtube, its just what he has showed the night before cut together quickly.

I stream myself, 13 loyal viewers ;) cause I dont have the time to cut together videos in a quality I can live with, but I gladly show how you can play the game or just talk to people in chat while Im trying to jack sparrow the **** out of this game.
"Why fight when you can negotiate?"

Like to see him sail solo, commandeer 1 other sloop, 2 brigs an their crew, give them all Athena an help them finish the voyage along the way as you meet them, where you jump from crew to crew to keep the alliance up.
    I did that.
so my point is there is many way to play the game, where you play the game an use the differens mechanics in game, or just lay behind a chair, talk to people in-game or in the twich chat.
