Non-Progress Custom Servers for events

  • Hey Rare,

could you pleeeaaase consider adding a feature to create or sell or rent a custom server for community or streamer or esport events?
We had our bigger LAN party this year and were able to host another game on a custom server for a tournament and open play later on. It was fun to play around in this custom circle of people during the event.
Just make the custom servers not count towards the overall personal progress.
I think it might also have a promotional effect for the game if many ppl around play it and you just want to join the fun.

    Cheers.

  • @peggypegasus I have thought about this before and would use the custom server(s) as a team building event for employers.

  • @pliskon Thats also a great idea

  • @peggypegasus I've also thought of this in terms of a teaching tool for the students I work with who are quite often very vulnerable. Sea of Thieves would make a great teamwork/socialising medium for them to learn in.

  • Yes, I think there is a lot of potential

  • What would stop people that don't like PVP from just abusing it.
Sorry, a lan party is not more important than the bigger picture.

  • @trickrtreat01 I have no idea how avoiding pvp has anything to do with that. Ppl want or can pvp in their own community but will have to play on usual public servers to gain any job progression

I don't see how SoT is really an e-sport type of game and who cares about streamers. Why should they get special servers ?

@PeggyPegasus Specifically suggested that character progress be disabled, so there'd be no benefit for regular players to use such servers.

I would also direct you to @KattTruewalker's post for another great suggestion about whom these servers could benefit aside from LAN parties and streamers.

a lot of people don't care about character progress and just want to sail around.
I don't see why anyone should get special treatment.

  • @trickrtreat01 Exactly, and it wouldn't impact the regular playerbase at all to let these players sail around by themselves.

Again, @KattTruewalker makes a great suggestion for why there's potentially a valid need for such servers.

  • @katttruewalker I agree that using Sea of Thieves in this manner might be good, but, rather than a publicly available version, why not speak with Rare about working with schools to do this? Such a thing is not ideal for general public consumption.

My concern about using this game as a socialization tool in schools is the PvP aspect of the game. There are other games that would do this better - Life is Feudal, for example... where you can turn off PvP and have people work together in specific roles to build towns, and such.

  • @entspeak That would be the logical thing to do, but I play a fair few games where private servers are possible and this would be one solution for those who are seeking to play in a way they prefer whether it's pvp or pve, or as a social feature as mentioned by @PeggyPegasus in her original post.

  • @katttruewalker If that is the real agenda here - giving people their own PvE servers, then I double down on nope. And chances are good it just ain’t gonna happen.

It would impact the player base and we do not need them. There are better tools for teaching kids than a pirate game.

I am also an educator and thought exactly this! It's such a useful tool for teaching teamwork, collaboration, team roles, leadership, management, communication, socialising and the list goes on.

To clarify my position; I'm all for restricted servers that could serve a valuable function, like @KattTruewalker, @PeggyPegasus and @Evasive-Envy give suggestions for. I don't think I could get behind free open PvE servers for everyone, even with all progression turned off.

But for larger private events, charity and education, I think it'd be great.

There are better tools for teaching kids than a pirate game.

We've had 2 professionals in this one thread alone state that they believe this game could be great for that exact purpose. Unless you're the third professional, I'll trust their opinions a bit more than yours mate.

What kid wouldn't love to learn in an environment like Sea of Thieves?
And why wouldn't you want to let them?

  • this would be the only thing Id really like to see, that would split the player base, but in a small way.
This would allow parents to just play with their kids in some pirate adventure, or have a giant lan party, but as long as you cant progress levels or gain coin in it, id be fine.
Sorta like how GTA online's system works, you cant do any club activities that give big bank in a private server, you have to do it in a public one.
IMO this wouldn't impact a lot of the players, because I want to progress so I'd doubt id use this but maybe 4 times at most. Kids for the most part just want to play a game, they dont care about progressing, or anything, they see a shiny, they want a shiny.
just like what @KattTruewalker said, this would be awesome for kids. And for the few adults out there that just want to hang out, and play with a bunch of their friends.

  • Are we talking about kids now or streamers and e-sports?

Who would decide who gets a private server and who doesnt ?

All i need to do is say i have a couple kids i need to teach and then I can have my own server?

and one word that kids need to learn that was left out is adversity. They need to learn that it doesn't always go their way like it would on a private server.

    Signed,
    The Scrooge.

This is exactly what I am talking about. So now it went from esports and streamers, to special needs kids ( I think that is what Katt was talking about and I mean no disrespect, my brother was special needs) and now its parents and their kids or just friends that wanna sail around..
    Slippery slope isn't it ?

  • @trickrtreat01 its just in general kind of thing man, my neighbor she doesn't like her kid online because hes only 7. if you dont like the idea, no need to slap the these people get special treatment because of private servers on it. In reality it doesn't benefit anyone, you cant progress in any way shape or form, and you cant do much, id even say disable public events, so you can experience it all in a private server.
And with how many times parents have come to the forums saying that playing the game is fun with their kid but the people around is the kind they dont want their kid hearing, i wouldn't mind adding private servers, like i said, and the OP as long as you can NOT progress or earn coin.
Theres really no secret sauce to this recipe, play the private servers and earn nothing, or play the game in public mode and earn something.

It's not a kids game. It's not Rares job to provide a safe space online for anyone's kid. It's not Rares job to provide private servers for people and split their player base. There have been plenty of times I have heard kids on mics at forts and so on. If parents wanna let their kids play fine. They should not get anything special though. It's not much different than letting your kid go to the store or library to be honest. Exposure to the outside world is exposure to the outside world.

  • I actually never mentioned the possibility of avoiding pvp. It's just for picking who I want to shoot down. I want to play with friends in a competitive as well. Not only cooperative. Especially with a big group.
For rare it would be enough to just offer private servers for rental. Communities, schools, clubs or event organizers can pay a small amount with collected money or sponsoring.
Streamers can invite for special events and pay the server rent with sponsoring and so on.
