Sea of Thieves the MMORPG or Battle Royale?

  • Greetings to the whole community, I want to take a moment to take your opinion on this. I am a player of mmorpg exclusively, come to this game for its innovation and this idea of a great open sea, I love the game and I am happy with its current state, but I wanted to project myself to the future and try to predict a bit its destiny, seeing that the developers are so interested in what the fans think, being that knowing a little about their ideas about the game could better understand where all this is going ... so I ask them, where would you take this game, to its side mmorpg or would you like something more battle royale ?, use your own concept of these two genres and fill it with the sea of thieves ... how would you feel more comfortable? ... ... I look forward to your comments

  • Can we vote for neither? I, personally, have zero interest in playing a more true MMO style game or playing a battle royale. If I be wanting to play those types o' games I would play EVE Online or PUBG.

Sea of Thieves be a different beast than either of those genres. I would vote for more of what we have. More types o' missions, more things to find at random, more variations on ship designs (such as the elusive 3 man ship), more customization, more types o' animals an' enemies. More variety to the PvP (where be the ability to board by swinging on a rope?).

More o' what we got. No a change to what we got. If ye be craving the progression o an MMO or the PvP arena o' battle royale, then this will no be the game for you.

  • For me it’s definitely on the side of MMORPG. The more it develops along these lines the happier I will be.

However, I believe it’s very interesting to have both ideas running along side each other and I wouldn’t necessarily want it to be just purely one or the other.

I desperately want the world to be more varied and vibrant. Hopefully over time it will be. I’d like an economy. I’d like fishing. Trading. Meaningful pvp.

    Coconuts!

  • @mhulhavhaka It's hard to just throw this game in these two genres.
As SoT does only have horizontal progression and Rare want to keep it this way, a classic RPG including better equipment, getting stronger by leveling up etc. is highly unlikely.
Battle Royale could be added as an additional game mode, but nothing from the road map sounds like this will be a thing.
It will be putting more focus on exploration, according to Joe Neate.

And for me this is the interesting part of the game: you don't just get stronger, you just improve your personal skills. I hope Rare doesn't change this approach.
If i want to play an onlinegame, where you can simply overpower your opponent, i will play GTA (which is fun too, but in a different way).

  • I agree with the rest here. This game isn't and shouldn't be an mmorpg nor a battle royale. The way RARE has designed this game is something I also like. Just build on it.

  • @mhulhavhaka I'd like the game to be an MMORPG, but I doubt it would head more in that direction. They'd need a MASSIVE overhaul of features and content!

  • @awesomecoreusa The only attribute of an MMO that I would like to see in SoT is to be able to interact with more players. IMO one of the best parts of MMO games is the massive multiplayer part. It's fun to interact with a lot of different people at the same time and specific people/groups on demand. Unfortunately I don't think that is possible with the way SoT is set up.

I'm with you on this. One of my favoured things about MMO's was when there was a community on a specific realm/server. So that you got to know people even outside of your own circles. Gossip and stories about individuals could circulate around the community. As soon as they moved to a more instanced approach and cross realms (thinking specifically WOW) that sort of destroyed that notion.

SOT does have some nice encounters with other players, they are fleeting however, and the chance of running into the same people or even recognising them is so slim. Which is a shame really, in my books.

  • @macdoland Exactly. It's so much fun teaming up with other ships in SoT and horsing around on the high seas. It's always super painful when you have to log out of those sessions because you don't know how long it's going to be before you have another one like it. You can't invite all those pirates to a session, and there are definitely more pirates looking for a fight than a friend. Which is fine, and fun, but there are definitely times I'd rather just race boats or something.

  • A battle royale mode is the worst possible idea for this game

  • I realize Battle Royale is a trendy thing, but it's just a game MODE. It's not a genre. When people say RPG, I think they drag all of the baggage that has accumulated in video games with it. But let's remember what RPG stands for. I'd love for SoT to embody a role playing game stripped of all the stats, item collection, inventory management, etc that role playing has gotten saddled with. In order to do that, though, the world and the characters in it would need to be FAR more interactive than at present.

  • @xcalypt0x If the world map opens up then aye, add more people to the server. For now I feel the number is fine. Sometimes ye can go hours without seeing a soul, other-times it seems ye all be sailing round the same 3/4 islands.

Other option could be a pirate hub town where we can mingle an' chat an' form crews. An' then once ye head to yer ship that be when you are moved into a unique game server.

  • @awesomecoreusa Yeah I've heard that idea before and thought it would be kind of cool. If they did implement something like that it would be awesome if it could be used for matchmaking.

  • @xcalypt0x Aye, I like it over randomly assigning. I know ye can use the forums an' what-not to match-make but sometimes ye just want to get on an' go.

T'would be nice to have a Tortuga like town an' ye can pick which tavern to drink in based on what kind o' crew yer looking for, so like an Order of Souls themed tavern an a skull fort themed tavern. So ye pick yer tavern, ye can meet with like minded pirates an' then leave the island and enter the game proper.

  • I want to to see an expansion of the lore. What are they going to do with Captain Flameheart, the Skeleton Kings, the Pirate Lord. All these. Characters outside the game. The Art book, Tale book, comics. A Novel in October should be coming out, but how will any of this effect the game. Will a fight on Discovery Ridge in the comic affect what Discovery Ridge in the game. Will this universe cross medias and will those medias effect the other. Battle Royal games have no story, so unless it is explained why a battle royal exists in the universe I don't want it. I don't know your definition for MMORPG, but my definition being WoW bases. No, this game is more original than that game it needs to be flushed out more. They need to build a game in their universe. Not a universe inside the game.

  • There are/were more people that treated the game more or less as Pirate Battle Royale closer to launch but anecdotally the lion's share of them have seemed to move on when free trials expired.

I don't either want a MMORPG in the mold of classic WoW necessarily or grindy elements such as that game had/has but it would be nice to see some ways for them to inject more life into the game world. For example it's kind of absurd that outposts and taverns and shops are preferably empty at all times or otherwise would come with the implicit high-to-guaranteed risk of robbery or death.

So - no - the mindless whack a mole of Battle Royale style play would be a huge disappointment to me and if we're talking MMORPG it just would be nicer to see/interact with more other players in the game world - however you want to define that.

  • @mhulhavhaka i will leave Sea Of Thieves as it is - Adventure Game

  • Can't be a mmorpg when it's not an rpg. And it's not a battle royale either. Might as well ask if the galleon is a plane or a car.

  • I think it is what it is and should remain what it is. Hopefully they can add content to whatever that is without compromising it.

I dunno. Something about what it is works for me. I was the type to get the MMORPG itch and would hunt for that perfect one only to be disappointed again and again. Whatever this is has satisfied that itch while scratching my pirate itch as well as several other itches I didn't know I was plagued with. While I would like to see it gain some of the socializing aspects of an MMORPG I have no desire for it to go down that path fully. Maybe throw in a depth of enemies you would find in an MMORPG if you want to attach that feature to the genre.

At the same time while I do not engage in pvp enough to need anything beyond what is present some gains in that department would no doubt be great as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't envy the balancing act they created here...

...but I certainly hope they manage it cause whatever this is...works. I would hate to see the scales tilt either direction.

  • Neither please. What is it with the battle royal stuff? It is a fun mode for some games, but not every game. Putting a battle royal mode in SoT would be like putting cheese on sweet & sour chicken.

  • @mhulhavhaka
If you go to a fort it's usually Battle Royale most of the time.

It's not really an MMORPG as you don't have any character or class growth. You can't improve your ship or your combat abilities. It's more of a PvP sandbox with a pirate theme.

  • Honestly, I just want anything that gives me a reason to PvP in this game. You get no rep or gold for sinking ships, whether it be sloop or galleon, and the chances anybody even has anything worth it aren't too good; unless its the same ship coming after you over and over again, then they're guaranteed to have nothing. I've done all the PvE content, bought all the things I've wanted, and don't care to turn in 1000 more skulls, chests, and golden animals just to get purple clothes and a title that unlocks a voyage making me do the exact same things for 1 new chest. Most of the fun I had in this game came from its PvP, and most of the fun I've had seeing people stream this game also came from the PvP. The Sea of Thieves moments on youtube feature mainly PvP, and the exciting stories I've read on here and reddit are also mostly PvP related. Now all my fav streamers have moved on to other games, and so have I. Server hopping for skull forts gets old, and there's nothing fun about chasing a ship for more than an hour or wasting time fighting another ship who doesn't even have any loot aboard. I didn't buy this game solely for the PvP, but that's the only element of this game for me that brings any kind of variety when I play it as of late.

This sentiment I agree with. Variety is what the game lacks at present - other than PvP. But PvP is largely pointless so the game feels hollow, empty and often pointless.

Hopefully the upcoming patches and content will alieve this feeling.

I’d strongly like to see a PvP faction of some sort. Before I get flamed, again, it would be one that encourages co-op as much as aggression. Some structure and purpose to PvP would add to the game, and if done well might actually ease the mindless aggression of some, due to a factions mechanics.

It’s just a thought. Just a suggestion of progression.

I would take a more mmo-esque approach. Give players actual roles to fill out such as being pirates, bounty hunters, merchants, navy etc (perhaps a faction system?).

I would also create classes like in Battlefield. Every class has different perks to excell in their activities and to support their crew members such as a portable ammo box for example or the boarder class gets access to grappling hooks. I also want to see a skill tree system with different passives that support you, your chosen playstyles and your allies that are in proximity to you.
Every class has upsides/downsides but they synergize well with each other, especially in good crews to minimise the cons to excell.

I would also increase the map to an ungodly size where 100 or even more players can fit in.

There should be a gigantic island that works as a social hub area with minigames, card games, an auction house and where you can craft items for you and others or where you can challenge other crews to duels. Bystanders of other crews can witness this scenario and can place bets freely.

Perhaps an actual crafting system would also fit in this scenario? Imagine a legendary drop of a man o' war crafting plan that has distinctive (and really awesome) features compared to a standard man o' war. You and your crew have to collect a good amount of crafting material to build this kind of beast.

That's what I would do with SoT and even more that I haven't listed because I don't think we'll get anything of these things listed above therefore there's sadly no real point.

My pessimism got the best of me at the end lol.
